I am amazed at how many younger people (under 60) like this. Nobody who was aware of music in 1962 thinks of this more than just another okay instrumental. I don't get it.

Re: Albums and Songs of 1962 Polls

So at least a couple times the view has been offered that this is a "weak" year.

At this point, I will say if you're talking about albums I agree. My support for the albums here is probably kind of tepid in comparison to other years. Perhaps that will change in the future with repeated listening or I'll find a new favorite in the albums I couldn't get to this month.

On the songs side, I disagree hugely. I continue to find stuff I am enjoying from the lists submitted already and on my own. I intend to post an updated list tomorrow with my discoveries added and a few changes (all past the top 40 so I don't think it would affect the poll)

ALBUMS
15 | Johnny Cash | THE SOUND OF JOHNNY CASH
14 | Dave Van Ronk | FOLKSINGER
13 | The Beach Boys | SURFIN' SAFARI
12 | Patsy Cline | SENTIMENTALLY YOURS
11 | Willie Nelson | AND THEN I WROTE...
10 | Mose Allison | I DON'T WORRY 'BOUT A THING
9 | Nat King Cole & George Shearing | NAT KING COLE SINGS GEORGE SHEARING PLAYS
8 | The Davis Sisters | SOMEWHERE IN GLORY
7 | Bobby Bland | HERE'S THE MAN!!!
6 | Sam Cooke | TWISTIN' THE NIGHT AWAY
5 | Ray Charles | MODERN SOUNDS IN COUNTRY AND WESTERN MUSIC, VOLUME TWO
4 | Johnny Cash | HYMNS FROM THE HEART
3 | Roy Orbison | CRYING
2 | Bob Dylan | BOB DYLAN
1 | Ray Charles | MODERN SOUNDS IN COUNTRY AND WESTERN MUSIC

I would imagine some of that is from prominent usage in the movie PULP FICTION. I don't rank it as highly as many others here. I think calling it an "okay instrumental" is unduly short shrift however.

That's what people thought back then, that's why it did not even crack the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

I am amazed at how many younger people (under 60) like this. Nobody who was aware of music in 1962 thinks of this more than just another okay instrumental. I don't get it.
I would imagine some of that is from prominent usage in the movie PULP FICTION. I don't rank it as highly as many others here. I think calling it an "okay instrumental" is unduly short shrift however.
That's what people thought back then, that's why it did not even crack the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Which is why hindsight is a good thing. :music-listening:

Yes!

Back in 2015, I voted for the song in the 62 poll but not the final 60s poll. So hopefully this time the song will end up higher in the finals. :music-listening:

I am amazed at how many younger people (under 60) like this. Nobody who was aware of music in 1962 thinks of this more than just another okay instrumental. I don't get it.

These two have a couple albums "smooshed" together.
Damn you, I was trying to sneak a few extra in with the ol' smoosharoo trick. ;)

I wonder how much of it is related to "Pulp Fiction," since that movie's primary fanbase would be under 60...
