Artist of the Month Song/Album Polls - May '21 - Nirvana!

Post by Holden »

Following with the poll from last month, in which I asked you to post your favorite Velvet Underground songs and albums in ranked lists and then compiled them, this month we will be moving on to the next artist on the list, Nirvana! Please post as many songs/albums in your lists as you would like! We'll only be doing studio albums, no live albums, so I'll post a list of eligible ones below. Thank you and have fun! Deadline will be May 31st, and I will be continuing to use the EOY Albums/Songs formula for this one.

01 | Bleach
02 | Nevermind
03 | In Utero

Figured I'd start this one a day or two early. I'm super excited for this one! When making lists, don't forget to try to go through their other releases, such as Incesticide and MTV Unplugged in New York. They have many more great songs other than just the ones on their LPs.

Albums, short version (songs later)
1. Nevermind
2. Bleach
3. In Utero

=================================================

Michael Stipe, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: “Nirvana defined a moment, a movement for outsiders, for the ‘fags,’ and the fat girls, and the broken toys, and the shy nerds, and the goth kids from Tennessee and Kentucky; for the rockers, and the awkward, and the fed-up, and the two smart kids, and the bullied.

We were a community, a generation – in Nirvana’s case, several generations – and the echo chamber of that collective howl … that moment, and that voice, reverberated into music, and film, into politics, into worldview, and so many fields, in so many ways, and in our lives, and this is not just pop music. This is something much greater than that.”

1. Nevermind
The grunge era of the early ‘90s was one of my very favorite eras – it was a great time as a teenager to be handed all this loud, angsty music – and this album put Nirvana at the top of that heap. Nevermind blew open a huge hole, musically and culturally; importance aside, though, the album was a great listen from beginning to end. It wasn't really a formal breakthrough -- for instance, you could trace alternative rock back to maybe the Velvet Underground; the Ramones had played punk and pop music, though of an early '60s variety; Michael Stipe already had a Number One album with R.E.M.'s Out of Time -- but arguably the band simply just did alternative rock/indie rock better than anyone else, and never before had there been a punkish act symbolically calling the shots, booting the existing pop royalty off his throne.

Incesticide
Maybe my favorite odds and sods collection (there’s also the Beatles’ Past Masters volume 1, both of which allow for A-sides, keep in mind). Beeswax and Hairspray Queen are some of their worst songs, and there’s a pointless electric version of Polly, but most everything else is pretty great; and Dive, Sliver, and Aneurysm mark a crucial songwriting leap.

2. Bleach
Paper Cuts might be the worst full-length composition on any of their albums, and there are problems like School only having 15 words for its lyrics, but a lot of Nirvana’s strengths are already in place. If Nevermind, as a crossover hit, occupies a place above the level of noise, then Bleach is the band’s best combination of melody and noise.

MTV Unplugged in New York
There are so many exclusive songs and so much new possibility here that (putting aside Incesticide) this practically functions as a fourth album, which From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah can’t claim, nor can other live releases that I won’t even bother to rank. I prefer Cobain’s vocals in a studio setting, but About a Girl, All Apologies, and Pennyroyal Tea are arguably in their best form here, plus there are various musical influences covered to excellent effect, with a Lead Belly song as a shocking closer. In an alternate universe where Nirvana remained with us in the '90s, maybe they could have released more material in this stripped-down vein. I prefer this as their swan song.

With the Lights Out [box set]
There's something about clearing a band's cupboards that evokes some sympathy. It's like, "Well these tapes could just keep rotting away in someone's house. Do you want to give a listen, or do you want them to essentially go in the trash?" (It helps that this box set was a gift to me, so I didn't have to put down a bunch of money for this.) This contains enough exclusive compositions to make for a minor Incesticide volume 2 and 3. The rest, like alternate takes, is for Nirvana nerds, though that doesn't exclude me. The modest highlight is maybe Blandest; other songs of some note include Mrs. Butterworth, If You Must, Clean Up Before She Comes, and a shocker toward the end, Do Re Mi, a little ditty that sounds nothing like the band's abrasive and often amelodic 1993-94 recordings (which generally make for my least favorite section of the box set).

3. In Utero
Songwriting often takes a backseat here to bludgeoning riffs; the only songs that are on Nevermind’s level are All Apologies (which dated from that era) and Heart-Shaped Box. The production, with the amps suddenly jumping to 11, quickly gets tiresome. The album is pretty good overall, but it’s generally the kind of thing that Nevermind leapfrogged over to separate the band from many of their peers. It was a small miracle that the follow-up even came out -- in retrospect, Cobain was already OD'ing hard dating back to when I first started hearing about the band in January of '92. He had a stomach ailment that never got better (his singing style couldn't have helped), drugs were a poor escape hatch, and maybe he was always headed for an early grave. In a way, I'm just lucky to have heard what Cobain had to offer in his brief time.

Top song from each album (eligible or not) in bold.

Songs:
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit (#1 all-time)
2. Come As You Are
3. Lithium
4. In Bloom
5. Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam
6. The Man Who Sold the World
7. All Apologies
8. Heart-Shaped Box
9. Dive
10. About a Girl
11. Aneurysm
12. Sliver
13. Breed

I set up 40 songs to rank, to pit against each other, and unusually, I didn't feel like doing it. I don't think I ever did a Rank the Tracks for Nevermind, for that matter. The remaining 40 would have been the rest of Nevermind (minus "Endless, Nameless," and with "Lounge Act" as the lowest-ranking of the 12 main songs), plus:

Aero Zeppelin - Been a Son - Big Long Now - Blandest (probably my favorite from the With the Lights Out box set) - Blew - Do Re Mi - Floyd the Barber - Lake of Fire - Love Buzz - Mexican Seafood - Molly's Lips - Mr. Moustache - Negative Creep - Pennyroyal Tea - Scentless Apprentice - Scoff - Stain - Turnaround - Verse Chorus Verse a.k.a. Sappy (i.e. "You're in a laundry room") - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Albums:

1. Nevermind (1991, my #50 album of all-time)
The soundtrack for the generation X (even if this comment from me generated many years ago a comment on RYM along the lines of "this is the worst thing you can say about this album"), filled with ferocious guitars, solid rhythms and teenage angst-charged angrily-shouted lyrics. Only this tight connection with a whole generation could explain the wide acclaim. But the album also contains an undeniable high amount of hooks and a great load of memorable melodies. Of course, nothing to be ashamed of.

2. In Utero (1993)
"Teenage angst has paid off well / Now I'm bored and old." A ferocious farewell to compensate the "clean" sound of "Nevermind."

3. Bleach (1989)
Their grunge album, not as brilliant as the following albums but with Cobain's knack for depicting discontent already in place.

Songs:
(every officially-released Nirvana song ranked)

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991, my #85 song of all time)
Krist Novoselic said (for the VH1 "Classic Albums" series, go to 9'00" here) that when Butch Vig showed to the members of the band the rough mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" they became shocked: "Did we do that? How did we do that?" The sound was so bright but also so powerful that the song was able to appeal both the alternative and mainstream audiences. And that was exactly what happened. And these Pixies-inspired quite-loud-quite dynamics became the template for the 1990s alternative rock music.

2. All Apologies (1993)
"Everything is my fault / I'll take all the blame." The last song on their last album feels like a suicide note. All alone is all we are.

3. Polly (1991)
A really disturbing song that Cobain wrote inspired by the true story of a girl kidnapped, tied, raped and tortured after a concert.

4. Come as You Are (1991)
The watery effect on the guitar intro now is a typical sound of the 1990s. Funny cause it was copied from a song called "Eighties."

5. Where Did You Sleep Last Night (1994)
It's all about the last verse, with Kurt Cobain pouring his soul out and creating a chilling coda to the short-lived career of Nirvana.

6. Heart-Shaped Box (1993)
7. In Bloom (1991)
8. You Know You're Right (2002)

Well, I think they are a little bit overrated.
:text-imsorry: it's just my humble opinion.
Since I'm a Pixies fan I should have dug more into Nirvana. But I didn't find anything on the later albums. "Something In The Way" is probably my fav but you can't put it first. I mean, how would that look.

Polyphonic Spree cover "Lithium" to great effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzUh_55x2M

My vote (albums, cast now) is exactly like this! I wouldn't want to change a thing!

One of the things I like about doing these polls is it gets me to listen to classics I hadn't revisited in a while. Going through Nirvana's three studio LPs back to back was quite entertaining.

I wonder if Smells Like Teen Spirit is even going to win, or if it's going to be like the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."

It's going to win and I don't think it'll be that close, but All Apologies and Lithium look like they're doing very well.
