Unacclaimed VII: Grand Final

Post by Bang Jan »

The way this game works is that you will be given a set of six songs, your job is to rank the set from best to worst. First place gets 6 points, second gets 5 etc.

The song with the most points will become the Unacclaimed VII Champion. If there is a tie for points, then the song with more first place votes will advance. If they are tied on first place votes as well, there will be a sudden death tiebreak.

Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Thursday (note the change) at 21:00 UTC.

Thread for the Draw

Swans | Love Will Save You
Rupa | Aaj Shanibar
Mecano | Hijo de la luna
Bubu | El Cortejo de un día amarillo
Lhasa de Sala | El Desierto
The Silvertones | Cheating and Lying

Interesting final, even if finally none of my nominations made it (all three of them ended on the second position of their groups, so close but no cigar). Anyway we have six very good songs from five different countries (USA, India, Spain, Argentina and Jamaica) with only two songs sung in English. Amazing.
I'm sorry but I'm going to chose the Spanish option, Mecano and their "Hijo de la luna" ("Child of the Moon"). But not for patriotic reasons, I honestly like the song. But it was not always like that, when I was young I grew tired of Mecano, they were ubiquitous in Spain during the 1980s and I found at the time this particular song pretentious and dangerously close to zarzuela (Spanish operetta).
But on the last 4-5 years an unexpected personal connection with the song has appeared. Let me explain it. I work at the Paediatric Ophtahlmology Department on an Hospital of my city, Valencia, having treated there quite a lot of albino patients. I've even created a reference unit for these patients, now taking care of patients from any part of Spain (even one patient from the South of France). Precisely yesterday I gave an online conference on the subject ("ocular manifestations of albinism").
But what's the connection with the Mecano song? Well, "Hijo de la luna" is a poetic fable, telling the story of a gypsy woman begging to the moon to find a gypsy husband for her, in exchange the moon demands the couple's firstborn. Then "from a cinnamon father was born a child / as white as the back of an ermine / with grey eyes instead of olive / albino child of the moon." The father, furiously thinking he has been cheated, stabs his wife to death and abandons the child. The moon becomes the child's mother "and every night there is a full moon / it's because the child is in a good mood / and if the child cries / the moon shall wane / in order to make him a cradle." You can check the complete translated lyrics here and the official video here.
Two years ago I was chating with some albino teenagers after a meeting and they told me that they were thinking about forming a hip hop band. The name of the band was going to be, of course, Hijos de la Luna.

Swans | Love Will Save You 7

Great final! I think I picked every one of these as my favorite in their original groups.

Great group of nominees for the finale! I'm surprised that no one has nominated Hijo de la luna, Aaj Shanibar, or El Desierto for the non-English poll given their success here.

If you don't know it yet, listen to "La llorona"... the album that contains this song is a kind of perfection.

Four points currently separate first and fifth, so your vote could make the difference to what wins and what doesn't win!

I could scarcely hope for a more stacked endgame- two entries on my AT list, one of which is a new addition, and a top 3 that I'd give an 8 or higher to. But it wouldn't be me if I got to the point straight away, so here's my 10 favourite discoveries from this year's tourney, praise be to Bang Jan and all nominators:

1) Rupa - Aaj Shanibar
2) The Isley Brothers - Livin' in the Life
3) The Silvertones - Cheating and Lying
4) Hans-a-Plast - Rank Xerox
5) Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin - Sanctus
6) Strawberry Switchblade - Trees and Flowers
7) Die wilde Jagd - 2000 Elefanten
8) Amon Düül II - Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge
9) Alan Stivell - Tri Martolod
10) Freezepop - Less Talk, More Rokk

And now my final placings:

1 | Rupa | Aaj Shanibar
2 | Bubu | El cortejo de un día amarillo
3 | The Silvertones | Cheating and Lying
4 | Lhasa de Sala | El Desierto
5 | Swans | Love Will Save You
6 | Mecano | Hijo de la luna
All I got inside is vacancy!

Argh I can't believe I missed the deadline! But I think my votes wouldn't have changed much other than bolstering Cheating and Lying's stats a bit. Congrats to Rupa, a deserved winner, and thanks to Bang Jan for running this again!

That's six unacclaimed tournaments in a row whose winner has either been an instrumental or sung in a language other than English...wow! The only winner sung in English, Sinnerman, is also the only one that subsequently became acclaimed.

Had been too busy to vote on the latter stages of the tournament, but glad to see my nomination won (and one of my others, Cheating and Lying, also made the final).

This Pitchfork article on it is interesting: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/how-a-lo ... algorithm/
