Artist of the Month Song/Album Polls - June '21 - The Clash!

Post by Holden »

Following with the poll from last month, in which I asked you to post your favorite Nirvana songs and albums in ranked lists and then compiled them, this month we will be moving on to the next artist on the list, The Clash! Please post as many songs/albums in your lists as you would like! We'll only be doing studio albums, no live albums, so I'll post a list of eligible ones below. Thank you and have fun! Deadline will be June 30th, and I will be continuing to use the EOY Albums/Songs formula for this one.

01 | The Clash (1977)
02 | Give 'Em Enough Rope (1978)
03 | London Calling (1979)
04 | Sandinista! (1980)
05 | Combat Rock (1982)
06 | Cut the Crap (1985)

It blows my mind that a 45 with Madonna on one side and The Clash on the other exists.

Albums:
1. London Calling
2. The Clash
3. Sandinista!
4. Combat Rock
5. Give 'Em Enough Rope (my memory is that there's one good song, at the end)
6. Cut the Crap (still terrible)

I really have no idea how they went from a sophomore slump album to an all-time top 10 contender (and double album) barely a year later. I could post songs now but I want listen to Give 'Em Enough Rope again before closing the door on the Clash.

If London Calling going to be our first perfect winner (only first place votes)?

Also, interesting that The Clash has the best double and triple album on AM, unless I’m missing a triple album.

Good thing critic Rob Sheffield doesn't know about this site. In the Spin guide, London Calling was tied for fourth.

I don't generally keep track of triple albums, but:
George Harrison, All Things Must Pass -- #312
Sandinista! -- #458

Darn, missed that one. The only other triple album I could remember was The Epic.

The 3-CD Magnetic Fields, 69 Love Songs set is at #238, but at 172:03 (Wikipedia) that's like 4 vinyl albums, since an old record is usually in the 40-minute range at most.

Harrison's is 105:59, and Sandinista! is 144:09.

Albums:

1. London Calling (1979, my #4 album of all-time)
"London Calling" is the perfect document of a jailbreak, of a band breaking the bars of the cage in which they have confined themselves, of a punk-rock band realizing that they can make MUSIC in capital letters. Rude boys, freedom fighters on Spanish Civil War, Monty Clift, Jimmy Jazz, Stagger Lee. Ska, rockabilly, reggae, power-pop, hard rock, soul or even jazz, anything useful to run away from punk was good enough. But not losing anyway the apocalyptic, combative, nihilistic and furious energy of punk.

2. The Clash (1977, #41)
Combat rock. A band of politically conscious punk-rockers turning upside down the world of music (not only them, a handful of other bands like the Sex Pistols and Damned were on the same battlefield) with ferocious and energetic sounds. The sounds of 1977, of the white riot, of London burning, of the lack of career opportunities, of the Brits bored with the USA, of the cheat ("no reason to play fair"), of "police and thieves in the street / scaring the nation," of hate and war. The sounds from Garageland.

3. Sandinista! (1980)
Yes, I know, it's long, disperse and uneven but it's fascinating to see the bold move of a major band scaring away their fanbase.

4. Combat Rock (1982)
Retaining the open-minded attitude of "Sandinista!" they created a more concise effort, including their most famous hit singles.

5. Give 'em Enough Rope (1978)
A good album suffering from being "sandwiched in between the two best Clash albums" (Listyguy in RYM), between two monsters.

6. Cut the Crap (1985)

Songs:

1. Spanish Bombs (1979, my #19 song of all time)
Yes, I know, from a Spaniard point of view the song is filled with mistakes and inaccuracies, going from the geographical (Costa Rica?) to the grammatical (vendanna?), not to mention the (funny) pidgin Spanish of the chorus. But the emotion is absolutely genuine. Four English punk-rockers reminiscing the days of the Spanish Civil War. Days of infamy but also days of glory. Days of "bullet holes in the cemetery walls" but also of "hillsides ringing with 'Free the people'" and "trenches full of poets." Chilling.

2. Version City (1980, #243)
Trying to run away from their punk roots they went so far that they went back, they went vintage ("what happened to all those old songs?", a radio DJ asks on the song intro). A kind of love song to music, the Clash took us on a trip on the train "that they speak of / the one I heard in my younger days / all great bluesmen have rode here" (they allude to Robert Johnson as a "lonely soul out on the crossroads"), a trip through Gibson Town and Fenderville on a train that "can pull you through to better days."

3. London Calling (1979)
December of 1979, The Clash closed the 1970s on an apocalyptic tone just like The Stones closed the 1960s with "Gimme Shelter."

4. Straight to Hell (1982)
"An eerie soundscape evoking a sordid globalism" (Bill Wyman). Echoes of Vietnam war still reverberating today. Sampled by M.I.A.

5. Stay Free (1978)
A real story about friendship with an unexpected sentimental tone. I always got chills on the "go easy, step lightly, stay free" part.

6. Career Opportunities (1977)
7. Rock the Casbah (1982)
8. Garageland (1977)
9. Rudie Can't Fail (1979)
10. Hitsville U.K. (1980)
11. The Guns of Brixton (1979)
12. The Magnificent Seven (1980)
13. Police and Thieves (1977)

18. Drug-Stabbing Time

The Rope album is mildly better than I remember, enough so to probably move a Beach Boys album into the last slot for the upcoming mega list.

Wow, no London Calling tracks in your top 8! I love a lot of these picks too, but I bet you'll be the only list like that.

I added a few more songs. Things around #13-18 are different, then. How could I not include a song called "Drug-Stabbing Time"?

Alright, I've finally got around to listening to Cut the Crap, and was very underwhelmed. It was fine and enjoyable. I didn't really hate it at all. Certainly still the worst of their discography, but not awful.

I like how you refer to not hating it like you expected as being underwhelmed!

I wish I could make all the top 7 joint #1! The weird thing about London Calling is there are too many peaks for me to pick one overriding out-and-out winner. Most people would choose the title track in a heartbeat but my highest nine songs in this list have all at one time ruled the roost.

I just listened to Sandinista for the first time. For a major release by a band I like that's in the AM top 500, it's curious how I never felt a pull to check it out before. The obvious reason is the length - I knew it was a long album, but I didn't realize it was pushing two and a half hours. That's longer than Swans albums! It's also surprising how few of The Clash's famous songs are on this album; The Clash have 27 songs in the AM 10,000, but only one of the 36 songs from this album (the sublime "Magnificent Seven") made the cut.

Anyway, I liked it more than I expected and I expect several of the album cuts to make my list. The flow is helped a lot by the worst material on the album all being near the end; I wasn't tempted to hit skip for most of the run time, though I think next time I'll skip out on everything after Charlie Don't Surf.

6 | CUT THE CRAP | 1985
5 | GIVE 'EM ENOUGH ROPE | 1978
4 | SANDINISTA! | 1980
3 | THE CLASH | 1977
2 | COMBAT ROCK | 1982
1 | LONDON CALLING | 1979

This was my first time listening to nearly all these albums. (We have the compilation THE STORY OF THE CLASH VOLUME 1.)

"CUT THE CRAP- An almost total musical abortion. Sounds as though two members were fighting over whether to make a rock or new wave synth record and deciding it would be both. Most listenable cut is "This is England".
GIVE 'EM ENOUGH ROPE- No really great songs in my estimation but not much totally awful either. A lot of this went by without making a big impression.
COMBAT ROCK- Too frontloaded for its own good. The obvious highlights,"Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and "Rock the Casbah" and to a lesser degree "Straight to Hell" all on side A. "Inoculated City" provides some latter interest but it's too little, too late.
"SANDINISTA!-Double albums are almost never a good idea and SANDINISTA! did not make it into my short list of worthy ones.

SONGS
20 | Police On My Back | 1980
19 | Hitsville U.K. | 1980
18 | Julie’s Been Working for the Drugstore | 1978

I didn't want to mention it earlier and jinx it, but Cut the Crap must be the first album in one of these polls to be voted on often (twelve votes) and always be last place. Even the Velvet Underground's Squeeze got one second-to-last vote. We didn't get our unanimous #1 album, but we got this.
