AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Hello, and welcome Europe! We convene here tonight in beautiful Berlin for the AM Fantasy Eurovision, featuring the best and most unique acts in all of Europe. Here tonight at the Olympiastadion, we greet our first twelve contenders.
After opening performances by Rammstein and previous winner Lena, we get to see our first group of quarter-finalists. By a shock of fate, all 50 surviving countries to have performed in Eurovision qualify now, including two new countries. EBU added Kazakhstan as an associate member which meant an open invitation. And they also worked out the whole thing with Kosovo, so they're in.
Requirements for release and recording were also waived. Anything goes now. And a combination of holograms and performance alterations allowed for deceased participants to stand in Olympiastadion.
But here are the rules for voting:
Pick your favorites using the standard Eurovision voting system:
1. 12
2. 10
3. 8
4. 7
5. 6
6. 5
7. 4
8. 3
9. 2
10. 1
When giving votes, you may give them to either the country or the artist...or both. But if you're lazy, just the country is fine.
The top FIVE by total points will go straight to the final!
I randomized the whole list and determined our first twelve Quarterfinalists. They are:
Austria-Falco-Junge Romer
Bulgaria-Andrea-Haide Hopa
Portugal-Amalia Rodrigues-Primavera
Greece-Aphrodite's Child-Four Horsemen
Armenia-Tigran Hamsayan-The Court Jester
Cyprus-Kim Nicolaou-Lady and the Parrot
The Netherlands-Eefje de Visser-De Parade
Slovenia-Kaja Draksler Octet-The Last Mowing
Georgia-Hamlet Gonashvili-Tsintskaro
Andorra-Hysteriofunk-All the Pretty Little Horses
Moldova-Cleopatra Stratan-Ceasu' Bate-lar
Albania-Elina Duni and Rob Luft-Numb
Polls close Saturday, June 12 at 7 PM EST.

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Good evening, Berlin! This is San Marino calling! Thanks for an awesome first quarterfinal. It was hard to make a decision, but here are the first results of the Sammarinese jury!
For the legendary Falco from Austria, 1 point!
For the very interesting prog from Greece, 2 points!
For the awesome bouncy rock song from Cyprus, 3 points!
For the lovely laid-back song from Albania, 4 points!
For some awesome folk music from Georgia, 5 points!
For the too-cool-for-school Cleopatra Stratan from Moldova, 6 points!
For the gorgeous traditional fado from Portugal, 7 points!
And now...our 8 points go to...Armenia!
Our 10 points go to...Andorra!
And last but not least, our 12 points go to a singer who was one of the highlights of this year's contest and one of her country's most talented musicians: Eefje de Visser from the Netherlands!
That's all from us, see you for the next quarterfinal!

Very amusing
Thanks to whuntva for setting the mood of this thread !
I wonder how the public vote will be represented here

By the way I listened to the Italian song for this year and it’s really quite brilliant. A first for this contest which I considered as a joke.
The French contestant wasn’t half bad either with a very Piaf performance.
The UK though… what a load of tosh.

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
I think it is impossible to really judge a song I don’t understand the lyrics to. I can only judge the tune. I liked the Italian tune. I’m not a fan of the UK entry either but considering the « tosh « served up every year from the majority of entries I didn’t feel the need to single it out for special attention Hmmm and there is the element that with the size of and finance behind the professional music business in the UK, we tend to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for Eurovision... we never take it seriously and mostly just poke fun of our own entry and a majority of the others.spiritualized wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 7:34 pm Very amusing

I’ll give France’s singer her dues. She can sing and it is well written but not at all to my taste. I guess being beautiful helps if you can excuse the weird haircut. That said... the Italian’s haircut didn’t hold him back
I’m just a girl... (don’t you think I know exactly where I stand ?)

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Yeah, I will say Eurovision was above-average quality this year. The year off led to some higher-quality work. I'm also glad Italy won as they were my favorite from the start. Over a decent French entrant, an overrated Maltese song, and a Swiss entrant that didn't do it for me. I even bought the Maneskin album when the show was done.spiritualized wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 7:34 pm Very amusing

Iceland was good too, and I feel kind of sorry for them being robbed twice.
As for the UK, I thought the song was a banger...but the staging was dull and uninspired. I can see why it got last, but 0 points seems kind of cruel.
And I have been contemplating how to simulate a public vote. I considered adding in a standard bell curve to inflate the scores ever so slightly. But that still didn't seem "fair", esp. if the order changed. Any ideas? Or should I just leave as is and pretend the public voted the same way?

Can't say I'm familiar with most of this year's Eurovision submissions but Hooverphonic's entry was already one of my tracks of the year, I wish Daði Freyr could have had another punt with Think about Things though.

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Here in Nijmegen, the oldest city in The Netherlands, we are still hip with the times and vote:
The Netherlands: Eefje de Visser - De Parade > 12 points
Armenia: Tigran Hamsayan - The Court Jester > 10 points
Bulgaria: Andrea - Haide Hopa > 8 points
Greece: Aphrodite's Child - Four Horsemen > 7 points
Slovenia: Kaja Draksler Octet - The Last Mowing > 6 points
Georgia: Hamlet Gonashvili - Tsintskaro > 5 points
Albania: Elina Duni and Rob Luft - Numb > 4 points
Portugal: Amalia Rodrigues - Primavera > 3 points
Andorra: Hysteriofunk - All the Pretty Little Horses > 2 points
Moldova: Cleopatra Stratan - Ceasu' Bate-lar > 1 point
Austria: Falco - Junge Romer > 0 points
Cyprus: Kim Nicolaou - Lady and the Parrot > 0 points
I was mostly amused by thinking about how any of this would go down on a real EuroVision contest. A few of these I can imagine as real entries, like Haida Hopa or Ceasu' Bate-lar, but others absolutely not. The Court Jester seems to be specifically put together to create a song that challenges the obligatory singing part required for the festival.
Interestingly, after I played the above playlist on Spotify, a playlist was generated immediately afterward based on the above and it started with Masked Ball by Jocelyn Pook and then went on with some rather eccentric soundtrack choices. Not something that would come out off an actual Eurovision playlist.
This year I was visiting my parents when the Eurovision aired and I saw bits and pieces of it for the first time in years. It still is very much not for me. Sure, it may be a well-produced show, but musically I still sounds all so incredibly assembly line. Perhaps it is me, but even the Italian winner sounded like a run-of-the-mill rock song. The thing I will most likely remember in years to come, though, is the nightmare fodder that is the German ukulele performance. I'm sorry Stevie, but the appeal is still lost on me.
Oh, and what is happening in the YouTube clip of the Cyprus entry above?

It’s from a 1983 album. But I think someone mentioned that it could be a ”Traditional”. I wasn’t aware of this. Maybe it shouldn’t have been nominated then?Schüttelbirne wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 11:13 am 4 points go to: Georgia: ჰამლეტ გონაშვილი [Hamlet Gonashvili] | "წინწყარო [Tsintskaro]" (?)
Anyway, I am surprised another (very famous) 1980s album has not been discussed, related to this song...

Anything goes in AM Fantasyland. Italy sent in a song from Barber of Seville.Henrik wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:36 pmIt’s from a 1983 album.

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Agree to disagree, but I won't argue with you on the German song. I enjoyed it, but I knew it was very much not for everyone (not for most people, in fact, considering its televote score - or lack thereof) and it was going to get lost in the shuffle.Rob wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 4:48 pm This year I was visiting my parents when the Eurovision aired and I saw bits and pieces of it for the first time in years.

Last call to vote!
It is worth noting there is currently a tie for fourth, though I do have two tiebreaker procedures:
*Number of 12-point votes
*Number of total votes (zeroes won't count)

Europe, Stop voting!
The interval act was a celebration of German classical music, from Bach to Beethoven, culminating in a group sing-off of "Ode to Joy". We also got a small preview of "El Gatopardo", playing a rehearsal of the Spanish entrant Triangulo de Amor Bizarro.
After that, the hosts presented the results. The Public voted en masse, and they gave us these results:
Greece-114
The Netherlands-109
Armenia-96
Moldova-77
Portugal-77
---
Albania-72
Austria-63
Slovenia-62
Georgia-59
Andorra-38
Bulgaria-32
Cyprus-20
The Top 5 will advance to the Grand Final once the quarterfinals are over. Until then, on to QF 2!

Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Okay just a bit too late ... never mind, would not have made a difference
Re: AM Fantasy Eurovision Quarterfinal 1
Hmmm.... I think there's still about half an hour to go before 7pm EST, but even if I'm late, here it goes anyway:
Good evening, Berlin! This is South Africa calling! Yes, even more bizarrely than Australia participating in Eurovision, South Africa has also been allowed an entry this year! But sadly we didn’t make it past the first stage. Even so, we are delighted to give our points.
Thank you for a truly fantastic show. The holograms of performers who are no longer alive was an especially nice touch!
Here are the first results of the South African jury!
1 point goes to… Bulgaria: Andrea - Haide Hopa
2 points go to… Albania: Elina Duni and Rob Luft - Numb
3 points go to… Austria: Falco - Junge Romer
4 points go to… Armenia: Tigran Hamsayan - The Court Jester
5 points go to… Moldova: Cleopatra Stratan - Ceasu' Bate-lar
6 points go to… The Netherlands: Eefje de Visser - De Parade
7 points go to… Georgia: Hamlet Gonashvili - Tsintskaro
And now, our 8 points go to... Greece: Aphrodite's Child - Four Horsemen
Our 10 points go to... Slovenia: Kaja Draksler Octet - The Last Mowing
And finally, our 12 points go to… Portugal: Amalia Rodrigues - Primavera
