Today’s artist is more well-known than Jack Drag, but only makes his first appearance now. Since this is another classical piece from before recording history the version on the playlist is once again based on what comes up first.

927. Ludwig von Beethoven - Symphony No. 3 in E flat major "Eroica: IV. Finale: Allegro molto
Year: 1805
Symphony: Symphony No. 3

Back in town, so lets check what I have served you last week.

Kelis - Dreamer: 6
I only know Kelis from Milkshake and I would never have guessed this is the same artist, some ten years later. The musical direction is already very different, but the voice even more so. I do kind of like this song, but I also feel that it's dream pop like sound is rather cliché; especially if you decide to call it Dreamer.

Evelyn “Champagne” King – I’m in Love: 7
Considering I don't generally like those repetitive disco tracks I'm surprised myself this ends up with a seven, but something about this just raises my spirits a little. If it was a minute and a half shorter it might have even got an 8, as this is good shot of positive energy.

John Cougar Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb: 6
Mellencamp is not going to be a favorite of mine soon, but the good-times vibe of this one has its appeal.

Marshall Crenshaw and the Handsome, Ruthless and Stupid Band – You’re My Favorite Waste of Time: 6
I know the Owen Paul cover, of course, but never knew the original. I prefer this take slightly, because it doesn't have the annoying eighties slickness. However, as fun as the title line is, I don't think there is a particularly great song hidden here.

The Raincoats – Only Loved at Night: 8
Magical stuff, like some ethereal sounds made scruffy. A band I want to look into more.

Jack Drag – She Trips Me Out With the Pink Floyd: 5
Frankly, I have completely forgotten what the previous Jack Drag entries sounded like. This one will also surely be forgotten quickly. It's not particularly bad, but it just doesn't stand out in any way.

Slowdive - Primal: 7
They would do better after this, but this is already a good mood setter.

Ludwig von Beethoven - Symphony No. 3 in E flat major "Eroica: IV. Finale: Allegro molto: 7
This Ludwid Von guy has done some good work, hasn't he? This one isn't a particular favorite of mine, but the master's hand is unmistakable.

Randy Newman - Birmingham: 6
This song comes from the biting Good Old Boys, but this itself seems rather tame. Or is it? Apparently it is still some sort of satire on people from Birmingham, but perhaps a little too subtle (something you wouldn't say about Rednecks, which comes before it on the album). It's a nice tune though; perhaps a little too appealing? I don't know, it makes for a compelling song, but I feel something is missing.

928. Randy Newman - Birmingham: 6 (a mix between Dylan and Waits) I slightly cringe about the way he pronounces Birming "HAM" (like this is some kind of delicacy).
I distinctively remember a Green Day concert in THAT *English* town and being bemused (along with the whole Brit crowd) at the way Billie Joe pronounced it. Two days later, it was in Manchester, no pronounciation problem there.

Philippe Katerine – La Banane: 2
I know it is supposed to be a humorous song, but Katerine also sings it in a way as if he thinks he is very funny, if that makes sense. It annoys the living hell out of me and the thin, almost jingle-like tune doesn't help matters. Maybe it is more effective if you speak French, but to me it is cringe-worthy.

There is something inherently funny about the French word banane that makes it funnier than banana (which is already pretty funny), but that's also the funniest thing about this song.

929. Philippe Katerine – La Banane (8)

I can understand that, without any understanding of the lyrics, this may put off many of our listeners.
I hold Katerine with high esteem, he initially managed to write song pastiches, usually around a minute in length on his first album. Very banal lyrics (on purpose), he lauded a French olympic cyclist (Jeannie Longo) on one of his more famous songs.
He became more popular over time but didn't drop the goofy humor (I mean check out the sleeve for his 2010 eponymous album). In this song, he just asks people to let him finish his banana alone, naked on the beach.

Musically, it reminds me of a French version of Hefner - the voices actually aren't that dissimilar.

The Lovemongers – Battle of Evermore: 10

So, uh, I wrote this long review of the song:

I heard the Led Zeppelin version before this one, as most people will. It is a song from their most acclaimed album, after all. I was immediately attracted to it. I don't think I had heard all that much Celtic folk inspired rock before. It's jangly guitars with an old feel had a strange appeal to me. There is also no denying that I was a huge Tolkien nerd at the time (and at heart I still am) so all the Lord of the Rings references in the lyrics made it right up my alley.

Heart is one of those classic rock bands that gets little love, but I have real soft spot for them. Perhaps because I think hard rock goes very well with female voices and there are precious few of them around. The two Wilson sisters also know how to rock out with the best of them, which really helps their case. It feels like they were regarded as something of a novelty at the time, "the female Led Zeppelin". Yet which all-male hard rock band could quite capture that specific, beautiful craziness in their awesome Crazy On You (which is close to my top 100 too)?

The Wilson sisters always acknowledged their love for Led Zeppelin, but it took until 1992 for them to actually cover them. Not as Heart this time, but as the sideproject The Lovemongers, a covers band. As far as I know Battle of Evermore was the only Led Zeppelin cover they ever released and it is a concert take at that. Yet that makes it all the better. Led Zeppelin's version is clearly a studio product, which is understandable for what they are going for and not all a mistake. Yet the intensity of The Lovemonger version is something else.

The lyrics are unabashedly a nerdy affair (not exactly a rare thing with Zeppelin): a big battle in a fantasy landscape full, with many magical creatures as its combatants. The Zeppelin made it into a mysterious, mystical affair, something achieved by playing it relatively quiet and letting the folk guitar create an ancient sound. This is not what Lovemongers go for. They go for total warfare! The song becomes a battle cry, with the Wilson sisters wailing like royal witches. The guitars are still folky and jangly, but rock far harder, creating a tumultuous feeling of chaos and despair, befitting of a war. Led Zeppelin presented the battle of Evermore from afar as in a myth; The Lovemongers bring you right there. This is only enhanced by the unfiltered live setting of the recording.

There are a lot of fantasy themed songs from seventies prog, more than a few based on Tolkien. I want to like them, but only occasionally do. The problem is that many such bands feel the need to capture fantasy with a certain formality and grace (and a lack of humor, but that is another matter). The Lovemongers are the only band I know that are not related to atmospheric or black metal that attack such material with an intensity and passion unknown to predecessors. And in contrast to those later metal bands they are far more direct. Perhaps there is a reason there are not more takes like this. I have shared this song with quite a few people who I know are into fantasy and it's related music; who listen to indeed fantasy-related metal or prog, or soundtracks from video games or The Lord of the Rings movies. I think none of them cared for it. They tend to prefer formalism with their fantasy.

As for me, this is how I wish more fantasy themed music was. It is a rare cover of a song I loved before where the cover has completely overshadowed the original for me. I still respect the Led Zeppelin version and always enjoy it when I listen to Led Zeppelin IV. But the real love has gone to the Lovemongers. Sadly, it is the only song of theirs like this. It feels unique to me.

The Lovemongers - The Battle of Evermore 7 Really different from the high-octane Heart of Barracuda and from their guise as smooth balladeers on Alone..I don't know why I anticipated this to sound like the only two Wilson sisters songs I recognise rather than, y'know, the LZ original.

Bruno Mars - Treasure: 1

(With apologies to StefieFan13)

I always listen to each song here three times over the day, but this time I'll break the mold. I heard this endlessly on the radio and friends' playlists back in the day when this was a huge hit. Ever since those days this is one of those songs that very immediately slips into my mind when talking about 'worst songs of all time'.

The whole song is annoying from start to finish, but two things make it stand out. First the faux-cute voice Mars employs throughout much of the song, but especially when he gets to the word "treasure". I'm talking about the way he sloshes the 's' to make it sound more cuddly. Around those years that type of singing was rather popular with males, especially in singer-songwriters, but it didn't escape Bruno Mars either. I always absolutely hated that vocal tick. Even worse are those bleeps that spring up during the chorus. They sound like a particularly cheap ringtone and they destroy my sanity. I remember joking at the time that Bruno Mars doesn't make songs, but sells ringtones (maybe in the way some pop songs nowadays are constructed to work as TikTok memes?).

The Lazy Song and Grenade were targets of scorn (and of course big hits) before Treasure and deservedly so, but I think Treasure is Bruno Mars' true nadir. He redeemed himself slightly with his starring part in Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, but otherwise there are few artists I consciously steer clear of more.

That's a 10 and a 1 back to back. Next time a 10 and a 10 back to back, please.
