Interesting to note that there are many song lists do not include "Sounds of Silence."

Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity totally slipped my mind but is now occupying my 8th place, thus moving everything down and booting Pastel Blues out. No other changes!

Ces gens la is a 1966 album on RYM and Wikipedia, but several people have listed it this month. What is correct?

Throughout this, I’ve assumed that all Brel albums are LPs rather than similarly named EPs. The Ces gens la EP was released in 1965, and though not everyone specified, I assume they mean the LP. And for albums with variable info on release, I’ve stopped from correcting people and just allow it to continue, as points from all polls are combined on my spreadsheet for the Wild Cards. For example, Waltz for Debby, the highest rated wild card, was ranked in the top fifteen on two separate years, and the points it received from those are added together. So, despite 1966 being correct for this particular album, I’m allowing people to vote in either year.

How did you ever get 1965 on this?

It was a top 20 hit single in early 1962, and had been released already in 1961.

Thank you for this. The single was 1965 (assuming RYM is correct), which probably complicated this. I'll vote for it in `66.

57 | The Kingston Trio | Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
How did you ever get 1965 on this?

It was a top 20 hit single in early 1962, and had been released already in 1961.
I'm thinking that this ranking was actually for the Johnny Rivers version but that you brain cramped and typed Kingston Trio by accident.

18 | Horace Silver | Song For My Father
Never heard this before, but it's ben on a lot of lists here so I just checked it out. The beginning sounds a lot "Ricki Don't Lose That Number" by Steely Dan. Maybe they lifted it?

Jackson wrote: Fri Jul 30, 2021 6:20 pm Ces gens la is a 1966 album on RYM and Wikipedia, but several people have listed it this month.
Sorry for listing Ces gens la as 1965, I meant the 6 song album released in 65 and now I realize it is an EP.
Please remove it from my album list and consider Rubber Soul as #1. I'll list ces gens la in the 66 list.
And yes remove Where Have All the Flowers Gone from my song list. My bad.
Sorry for the extra work but I'm on holidays in a place with no WiFi and short time.
Thanks !

I ran out of time again to update my albums list, but look forward to doing that another time. Happy with the albums on my list anyway.

About Jacques Brel's Ces gens-là, my understanding is that it was released as a 6-track album in 1965 and then re-released as a 10-track album in 1966. RateYourMusic and Discogs do seem to recognise the 1965 6-track release as an album/LP.

Confusingly, there was also a 3-track EP released in 1965, which consisted of 3 of the tracks from the 6-track album.

I prefer the 6-track album from 1965 over the 10-track album from 1966, so that's the one I'm voting for.

On the Jacques Brel album: since RYM and discogs consider the 1965 six song release and the 1966 ten song release the same album, I will as well. The Ces gens-la EP on RYM is a 3-song EP, and I assume no one meant that. I will, in the final rollout, if Ces Gens-la qualifies, I will give it the release date of 1966, since I have decided to use RYM as the main source for release dates, and I think consistency is important for things like this.

nicolas, I will follow your instructions, but note that I was incorrect in the first place, stating the six-song release was an EP. If you'd like to include it next month, wonderful! But if you'd like to keep it in this poll, also good, but if you don't respond by the end of the day or so, I'll follow your current advice. Thanks, and sorry about the confusion.

*I did not combine the votes for Part III and Part IV, since there were people who only voted for one of them. The points from the people who voted for III/IV (which is understandable) were added to both.

For comparison, the Top 10 from 2015:

1 | Bob Dylan | Like a Rolling Stone
2 | The Rolling Stones | (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
3 | The Mamas and the Papas | California Dreamin'
4 | The Beatles | Yesterday
5 | Nina Simone | Sinnerman
6 | Simon and Garfunkel | The Sounds of Silence
7 | The Beatles | Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
8 | Bob Dylan | Desolation Row
9 | The Beatles | In My Life
10 | Bob Dylan | Subterranean Homesick Blues

It seems Bob Dylan fell in appreciation overall, but "Like a Rolling Stone" still has more points than any other song in this poll so far (though "Stand by Me" has 1051, so just one point less).

For comparison, the AM Top 10:

1 | Bob Dylan | Like a Rolling Stone
2 | The Rolling Stones | (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
3 | The Who | My Generation
4 | The Byrds | Mr. Tambourine Man
5 | The Mamas and the Papas | California Dreamin'
6 | Smokey Robinson & The Miracles | The Tracks of My Tears
7 | The Beatles | Yesterday
8 | Simon and Garfunkel | The Sound of Silence
9 | James Brown | Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
10 | The Beatles | Help!

Both of versions of "Mr. Tambourine Man" finishing this low was very surprising to me. Even combined they wouldn't have cracked the Top 10!

Re: Albums and Songs of 1965 Polls

Post by Father2TheMan »

It will be too late but most of my attention has been focused on trying to get together an all-time list and I missed out on a LOT of songs for my list...several of which would have been top 50 maybe top 20. Will post a more definitive list later just because.
