Albums and Songs of 1965 Polls

Post by Holden »

1965

AM Links: Albums, Songs

Next up is 1965! I will be tallying the albums, and Schüttelbirne will be tallying the songs. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

The deadline to vote is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on July 31st.

Compilations are not allowed. If you're unsure about a release date, consult RateYourMusic.com and AcclaimedMusic.net.

Thanks to Listyguy for running last year's 1970s poll from which I have stolen pretty much this whole intro and format.

I see this is listed on the site as 1965, but I think that's a mistake, it's 1967.

It seems that it was originally on an E.P. in 1965, but it's the 1967 version I know. I've just listened to the original version, and it doesn't grab me like the 1967 version. So I'll save it until 1967. Thanks.

Means it goes from being my no.3 of '65 to my no.12 of '67 though!
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,
Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

#72 The Zombies- Tell Her No [I saw that Hymie had this one in 1964. I only found source that placed this single in late 1964. Every other source I found, including RYM, had it in early 1965]
Here it is as a pick hit for the week ending Dec. 29, 1964, on the biggest radio station in the USA at the time.

The Gaye record is from the 70s. The Sonny & Cher was released in 1964. It was re-released in 1965 after they became popular.

The famous version of the Country Joe is from 1967. The one from 1965 is very different, like a Jug Band song with lots of different lyrics. The Yardbirds song is from 1967, and the Burl Ives is from 1964.

I wonder if these two stations, being big players in the most important radio market in the USA, got an advance promo copy ahead of the commercial release, which came a week or so later?

I know someone who bought the "Tell Her No" 45 in 1964 after hearing it on WMCA. In those days record companies did not have things being played on the air without having the item available for purchase.

I know someone who bought the "Tell Her No" 45 in 1964 after hearing it on WMCA. In those days record companies did not have things being played on the air without having the item available for purchase.
You're wrong here Hymie. I have at least 2o sources that all say that Tell Her No was released in 1965. I know for a fact that many radio stations got promotional copies of singles and did play them before the actual release. Tell her No was indeed released on January 2, 1965.

Afraid not. None of these "sources" you have were there at the time like my sources were. "Tel Her No" was on the WMCA survey already in 1964. The survey was based on local record sales. The station would call local dozens of record stores in the tri-state (NY, NJ CT) every week to get their top sellers to put their survey together. My friend Frank Castellano bought the 45 on December 27, 1964 at a store in Asbury Park, NJ.

!965 is the best year of the decade, easily. The worst is 1962.

Ok, I can live with that since it's not part of my top 20. For completism, I suppose you could picture everything below it being moved up a spot and Land of 1000 Dances by Cannibal and the Headhunters landing in 150th place.

EDIT: Just noticed Lo1000D is already my #119! Make that Tawny Reed's rendition of Needle in a Haystack as the anchor of my ballot.

No way!

I've not decided on whether to dub 1966, '67 or '68 the best of the decade but '66 reigns over the preceding year- the Stones go dark, the Byrds go trippy, Stax/Atlantic codify Southern Soul, H-D-H rule Motown and essentially invent Northern Soul...even the Beatles and Beach Boys manage to come up with a classic single each ;) I'd be up for reading your case for 1965 though!

'62 probably is the weakest, too much twisting was had.

First off, I disagree that "trippy" was a good thing. I also don't think much of most Northern Soul. Although the top Northern Soul record of all time is from 1965. Northern Soul is essentially soul (and other genres) with a beat that's fast enough to get white people dancing. The real "Soul" crowd here in America, where Soul originated, prefers more of the downbeat stuff. Things like "Mr. Big Stuff" and "I'll Take You There" used to pack the floor when I DJ'd for a Black crowd, but they would never dance to "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)," that record is way too fast for that crowd.

"Northern Soul" includes huge records by non soul acts like Paul Anka, Joey Heatherton and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It's not "Soul" that makes a record "Northern Soul," it's a certain number of beats per minute.

Anyway my list of favorites for 1965 contains 268 songs, for 1966 it's just 207. To make those lists the song has to be a solid 7 or higher. A low 7 does not make the list. So in my judgment there are 32% more really good songs from 1965 than from 1966.

Of course 1965 cannot even hold a candle to the best years of the 1950s IMO. My 1956 list contains well over 700 songs.

I'd concur that "trippy" isn't intrinsically positive. I feel the whole attempt to replicate the acid experience instigated an explosion of creative exploration within rock and soul, which I'd argue was largely exciting. I knew you wouldn't share this enthusiasm for the intentions of the psychedelic period and I wouldn't defend what I'd see as some of the era's more self-consciously whimsical tendencies.

You're right that anything the DJ deems the right tempo suddenly becomes Northern Soul in their eyes, including TV themes, and there were examples thereof before '66 but that was the year for me where songs with its hallmarks (>100BPM, pounding drumbeat, often vibraphone throughout, cheery depiction of love- even if it was heartbreak) dominated non-Stax soul, see This Old Heart of Mine, Get Ready, I'm Ready for Love.

I know you have firsthand experience of the time but I'd refrain from attributing the appeal of a genre solely to race. You would have DJ'd in an era when black people pioneered disco at least, if not house and techno too, all of which are ≥120BPM, and they weren't just playing for white audiences. More currently, drill is routinely faster than that and it wouldn't be generalising too much to say that artists and fans of the genre alike are less likely to be white than not (be they black, Asian, Latino or any other background).

Of course nothing is "solely" about anything, but by and large the vast majority of American blacks and whites like very different styles of music. That's why Billboard has had a separate chart for what is popular among blacks for 80 years now. It may not be as pronounced now as in the past because everybody can get to hear everything in this day and age. But I'm not interested in music from the past 35 years or so.

Thankfully, we've moved past the times of 'race records' but I'm sure you'll find music of some value to you from the last 35 years one of these days!
