David Bowie – The Width of a Circle: 8
I always ignored this album a little; I think I only heard it once a couple of years ago. Didn't remember this song, but it is actually pretty great. It is pretty much prog rock, but with a more crunchy, hard rock guitar sound than is usual for the genre. Prog-rock for me lives or dies with flow and that aspect is great here. A hidden gem in the large Bowie catalogue, perhaps.

David Bowie – The Width of a Circle: 9.5 (dropped 3 spots to #317 currently)
A fine track - the opening track of my second favorite Bowie album (loved/pushed it years before "Cobain-approved" :D ), this was a frequent entry in his early live shows, sometimes including an expanded musical jam allowing him time to change costumes. Just a pure delight all the way through.

Why would anybody care about the endorsement of someone who was as mentally ill as Cobain was?

I’ve look at this comment for like five minutes, and I really don’t understand it. Is this a joke? What’s the punchline? Haha he was mentally ill? We shouldn’t listen to music mentally ill people like? Cobain’s undeniable influence on modern music and looking into what influenced him is invalidated because of his mental illness.

I don’t get it, like I don’t understand the point you were trying to make here. I probably shouldn’t have engaged with it, but I feel like this statement is so odd and ridiculous I must have entered the twilight zone. Am I crazy? Was this funny to others? Was it not a joke? Am I dreaming?

There's no punch line. I wasn't trying to funny at all. I'm simply saying that you can't trust the judgment of someone who is severely mentally ill to the point that he would take his own life. Would you feel comfortable getting into a car with Cobain driving? Or having him baby sit for your kids? I know that many here want it to be a PC world where people don't talk about these things, but let's be real here. The guy had serious mental and emotional issues. He was also a heroin addict and had alcohol problems too. Who knows what was going on in his mind?

So you only listen to music by artists who you'd let babysit your kids of drive you around? Because I have some bad news for you about Hank Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, and countless other artists whose music you've expressed that you like before.

I never said you can't like Cobain's music if you want to. Tons of great artists had severe mental issues. Not many of them got to the level of even contemplating suicide, let alone going through with it. THAT'S takes a really serious case of mental illness.

That's one of the many reasons that I have not interest in song lyrics. WHY would I care what some musician thinks about anything? If I want commentary on social issues I'll go to educated experts on the subject rather than to someone who barely got out of high school like Bob Dylan, or someone who never got close to graduating high school, like James Brown.

I don't care about these musicians as people. And I'm sure that I'd hate most of them if I knew them well personally. Most of the are/were into serious drugs and/or alcohol, and I've never been interested in either. Never been drunk in my life. Then there's loads of pedophiles like Jimmy Page and Jerry Lee Lewis and even Elvis, who were fucking 14 year old girls.

If you care about what Neil Young, Kurt Kobain and Bob Dylan think about the world, you might as well ask your gardener and your plumber what they think, because their opinion is just as significant as the opinion of great musicians.

Having musical or athletic talent does not give you any special insight into life. Having musical talent does not even give you any special talent to assess other people's music. That's why it's pretty rare for great musicians to also be great producers or record company administrators or owners.

My response:

I prefer Weller's vocals with The Style Council.

As for his solo career, I find that after The Style Council Weller's vocals degraded in a manner similar to Joe Cocker.

I saw him perform a few years ago at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and he was quite pitchy.

The soppy side of grunge, allegedly. It doesn't resonate, the song feels empty, chugging.

I've always been quite fond of Of Montreal quirky pop sensibilities and this song fits the bill nicely. This isn't "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" from the same album, but pleasant nonetheless

People probably don't compare Can and Plastikman often, but these two songs make an interesting couple, as both are centered around percussion sounds with an airy production, giving the songs a strange sense of rhythm. Two cool songs.

I do generally like this type of rock, but this song strikes me as a little too generic and I don't like the whiny vocals or silly lyrics much. It's a song that gets annoying rather quick.

The Shondells – Hanky Panky

2

A quick way to descend into madness is to stew over how some great songs or great musicians never hit Number One on the Hot 100, while less worthy material apparently reached the right people at the right time (in this case, not for just a week, like a chart hiccup, but for 2 weeks; and not in 1964, but in 1966, when the Hanky Panky song caught on).

Docked hard for "My baby does the hanky panky" being the intro, the verse, the pre-chorus, the chorus, the guitar solo (okay, there's an actual solo), and the outro.

That's the best part!

It would pack the dance floor in MY DJ days in the early to mid 1980s, 15-20 years after it was a hit.

Paying attention to the lyrics on this kid of record is what's silly. It's like paying attention to the lyrics on this:

By the way, here's the original version of "Hanky Panky." It was written as a Spector like girl group record.

Since this is site about music critics and their rankings of records, in Dave Marsh's book " The Heart of Rock & Soul -The 1001 Greatest Singles of Ever Made" he ranks "Hanky Panky" at #911, and writes this.....

In the greatest dance clubs there's a long estimable tradition of deejay "exclusive." In the Bronx during the late seventies pioneering hip-hop deejays scraped the labels off the discs they'd tracked down so that competitors couldn't find out what old or new jams they were spinning.

That kind of competition went on in Pittsburgh in the early sixties. Thus was born "Hanky Panky," a great dumb riff, and the career of Tommy James, the only bubble gum singer with rock and roll power. James never should have heard "Hanky Panky." It was written in 20 minutes in the hall outside of a record session, as filler, by the New York songmillers Barry and Greenwich, and recorded by them under their studio name, the Raindrops, who released it as the flip side of a flop called "That Boy John." It came out in late November 1963, the same week that John Kennedy was assassinated, and that was that. Still, some copies must have been shipped out to the Midwest. And somebody bought one, flipped it over, and liked what he heard.

It wasn't Tommy James. He grew up in Niles, Michigan, on the Indiana Border, near South Bend and Notre Dame University. While he was still underage, James (known then by his real name, Tommy Jackson) used to steal across to the South Bend bars to hear bands. One night in 1964, he happened upon a group called the Spinners who had somehow learned "Hanky Panky."

James had had a band called the Shondells, since he was in 7th grade. He'd made one single, Long Pony Tail," for Jack Douglas of local radio station WNIL. When Douglas asked for more, Tommy Suggested "Hanky Panky." Since he'd only heard the song on the fly, Tommy Had to make up most of the words. It didn't make much difference---what counted was that lubricious guitar riff. Released on Douglas's regional label, Snap, the disc got local airplay in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. By mid-1965, though, its run was over. Tommy graduated from high school and the Shondells split up. By December he was out of work and didn't know exactly what to do with himself.

Then James got a call from a guy who identified himself as Mad Mike Metro, a Pittsburgh disc jockey. Mad Mike aid that "Hanky Panky" was number one out there. A deejay named Bob Livorio dug through a bargain bin, came up with a copy of the Shondells "Hanky Panky" and began playing it on his show. It became so successful that some enterprising local bootlegged it and it sold 80,000 copies in Pittsburgh before James and Douglas could license it to Roulette and have it nationally rereleased.

The other Shondells had already entered the adult worls and weren't interested in getting back together, so Tommy flew to Pittsburgh, lip-synched some promotional dates, and asked the first decent bar band he came across, a local quartet called the Raconteurs, if they wanted to fill in as the Shondells. They went on from there to several more memorably stupid hits, then sank quietly into a much-deserved oblivion, their songs occasionally revived, their personna never mourned.

I disagree with Marsh here, Tommy James and the Shondells made several great records IMO. They have 5 songs listed here on the site including "Crimson And Clover" which is in the top 1,000.

Between all the Hymies, Brads and Wezzos there also people like Bruno who hardly ever get to deliver a song for this game. Today is an exception for him.

948. George Harrison – Love Comes to Everyone
Year: 1979
Album: George Harrison
Biggest Fan: Bruno (#807)

947. The Shondells | "Hanky Panky": 6.5/10 = This actually sounds very familiar indeed. It's basic rock'n'roll in its early form and I quite like the archival character of it.
948. George Harrison | "Love Comes to Everyone": (4/10). George Harrison landed a fantastic album in 1970 with "All Things Must Pass". By 1979, he had entered soft rock territory, cheesy lyrics and keyboards. Moving on.
949. Brad – The Day Brings (5/10)
Fun fact from RYM : "Their debut album was recorded in roughly 20 days, with many tracks taken from in-studio jam sessions. They wanted to call themselves Shame, but another musician, Brad Wilson, already owned the name. Once he knew that a member of Pearl Jam was in Brad, he asked for a ridiculous amount of money to let them use the name, even though his band Shame had disbanded for quite some time. As a response to the situation, the band decided to steal the name of the guy and call themselves Brad, while Shame became the album's title."

I knew of the connection with Gossard, from Pearl Jam and quite liked the album this song is from, but on its own, it's rather bland. Piano driven, bongos and a singer whose voice I don't rate much.
