Biggest Fan Songs - August 2021

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the (two days late) August 2021 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

The rather spacious sound elevates it over much other pop of the same period, but that doesn't mean it really gets to me.

* I think these are correct, but I can’t find any actual proof of this song being released before the 2003 compilation Midnite Blues Party Volume Two - Rare Blues And Rhythm & Blues From The 1940's & 1950's.

It's 1955, and Little Leo is Leo Price, brother of Lloyd Price. It's a 9 for me.

EDIT - From what I can find, I think you are right about 1954. It was on a label called Meladee that was only around for 1954. The flip side was "Handwriting On The Wall" and so far I can't find a picture of the record. I can just find a CD with all stuff from the label.

More digging and I am now staying with 1955 on Little Leo. The label was definitely around at least through 1956.

Seems my estimation that last week’s Lovemongers track would be my last nomination was. Not that I’m complaining. Here is the sixth appearance by Neil Young:

939. Neil Young – See the Sky About to Rain
Year: 1974
Album: On the Beach

Neil Young – See the Sky About to Rain: 8
Arguably the most melancholic song from the arguably the most melancholic album of what was arguably Neil Young's most melancholic period. That electric piano (which is indeed what it is) that Hymie mentions is very beautiful, especially because it sounds so rough, which is not something said about your regular piano sound. The whole song has just this kind of fragility that never quite falls apart, like a sky about to rain. With placement #977 on my list it is likely to fall off next time around, although this was great to hear again after what is probably some years, so who knows where it will go.

I was not aware of this pre-"Millions Now Living Will Die", but this is obviously from the same batch. Brilliant track, in the same vein as the aforementioned album. Interesting enough to be able to pass these 12 mins without being distracted. John McEntire's talent shines through here, it's just a shame he's now releasing shit tons of drone albums which are much less interesting than this !

I really don't know enough about this music or its era to enjoy it to the full. It's nice, but as with most people who don't know a genre well enough, it does sound very similar to most of the stuff Hymie's listening to.
Very obscure, Little Leo barely appears on Google !

I love Neil Young, in spite of his goaty, shaky voice. He's such a brilliant songwriter with melodies that you cannot forget. This is a bit more sophisticated than his folk stuff, less rock than his Raged Glory days, with electric piano and slide guitars, but the core of the writing is there.

The Drifters – Saturday Night at the Movies: 6

Only now noticed that this fittingly landed on a Saturday. I'm going to the movies tomorrow instead of tonight, so that is a missed opportunity. The song itself is kind of what I expect from The Drifters. They tend to be dependable, without ever really grabbing me.

Remember how the start of this year seemed to be all about Soul Asylum on this forum? Biggest Fan finally joins in. Better late than never, right? The song comes courtesy of Wezzo, who gets two songs in a row.

Year: 1992

Soul Asylum - Homesick: 6
Hearing this song's parent album for the Tournament of Champions game on this forum at the start of the year gave me something of a new appreciation of Runaway Train for some reason. Homesick isn't as memorable. It's a fine if unremarkable song on an album that really excels in its singles.

I remember really liking this album when I heard it some years ago, but this is not a track that stayed with me. Safetycat is right in saying that the second half has perhaps pull too much weight here, even if it is quite great there.

I hate going against our forummaster here, but this is typical Eurovision, made for the masses stuff. Everything is based about the voice, and very little about the music. It's quite boring and will not be played again on my playlist.
Sorry you feel this way. I think this song would fit about as well on an Andy Stott or James Blake album, as it would in Eurovision. Not that I think an ESC sounding song is necessarily a bad thing (nowadays at least).

”Euphoria” wasn’t typical Eurovision either in 2012 when it stood out and won.

Actually Henrik, I'll concede that this year's winner was actually decent :)

But this is my taste and I can be the only one to be accountable on how poor it is !

Hope you're doing well,
Hey, no hard feelings! I know this isn’t your type of music, and I’m certainly not trying to say that my taste is any better. However, there are many low ratings for this song here and it saddens me a bit if someone gave it a low rating just by thinking ”Oh, Loreen again, who won Eurovision. Then this is automatically bad.”

It was when I saw that this single actually has a RYM rating of 3,65 (out of 31 votes) that I found the courage to write these posts. :D
