Biggest Fan Songs - September 2021
Welcome to the September 2021 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.
There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.
Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.
You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

This a rare type of rock that barely ever connects with me. I had forgotten about this song and band and there is a reason for it. It has this odd mixture of rebellion and mawkishness that don't go well together.

Broken Bells - October: 6
Standard-issue indie of the period. Not bad, but it leaves my mind immediately.
Alannah Myles – Black Velvet: 8
Like Ti Sento a few days ago Black Velvet is really tied to my youth, but far more so. I was two when this was a hit and I feel like this was always playing in, say, the first 25 years of my life. It really fit the description that each time at least one Dutch radio station seemed to be playing this for decades. Likewise, my parents owned quite a load of various artist CD's, most in soft rock and AOR genres. I suspect Black Velvet was on all of them. In my mind this became the definition of an evergreen: a song that everyone loves and can be played in every situation. When I first started listening to music on my own it was almost a given that this would be on my early mixtapes or playlists. It might be one of the songs I have heard the most.
Do I actually love it? Well, ever since I ditched radio listening and developed my own musical taste I seem to have completely lost touch with the song. 10 years ago it would still have been a shoe-in for my top 1000 songs. This time around it wasn't even on my short-list. In a way, because of the deep familiarity and the overplay I have always taken this song for granted. I knew it was pretty, but I never particularly paid attention to it. So it is nice to actually have it appear here unexpectedly, in a different context and especially after haven't heard it for some time. It's nice to hear it afresh, for as much as such a thing is possible with a song I'll probably can sing perfectly after dementia is almost one with me.
Yes, I do like it. That "slow southern style" is sexy. The atmosphere is funnily quite Blue Velvet and it works. Myles' voice is gorgeous. It also holds a nice in the long line of Elvis tributes that are almost a genre unto themselves by now. It's hard to get excited by the song perhaps. It's not threatening to make my top 1000 even now. Yet it is nice to re-connect with this old acquaintance.

I also voted for "Black Velvet" this time. Though my usual precedent here is to not vote for songs on my list.
Ok, I'll give it a 9.

It didn't make my list this time, but I do have a soft spot for this one. Early 2000s pop-punk was the genre I first came to love. I get what Rob's saying about their style, and that bugs me with just about all their other songs, but I really enjoy the melodies on this one and I connect with it more deeply because of a memory I strongly associate with it.

Elvis Presley – Old Shep: 3
Yesterday Alannah Myles was singing about "that slow southern style". At his best, Elvis made such a thing sound cool and even sexy. At other times he could make it mawkish and boring, like here. It doesn't help that the story about a dying dog and his owner is about as sentimental as you can get. Certainly Elvis was not a stranger to sentimentality and that is not always to my liking, but even so this is cloyingly sappy. Probably my least favorite Elvis song of all I have heard, except perhaps the few he sung in German, although those have at least comedy value.

Now that the all-time song list craziness is over, I plan to start voting and considering these for 3 years from now. This one actually made my list. I love the opening slinky guitar run, Myles' voice and the hook. I'll give it a 7.

As far as these types of song go, I don't mind this one all that much, but once again I have no idea why this repetition needs to go on for 11 minutes. For the dancefloors, I guess.

Allman Brothers Band – One Way Out: 8
Very cool blues rock. Might be the best song I have heard by them yet.
Sharon Van Etten – One Day: 7
I remember feeling that some of Sharon Van Etten's earlier records where a bit too rambling for my taste, but this song actually has a very good melody.
