Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2021: Nominations

Post by Jirin »

This is the nomination thread for BMAA2021. The way this game works is, everybody has a month to nominate one album. Then, another month to listen to as many nominees as possible and rank all the ones they heard from favorite to least favorite. They’ll then be ranked with a win-loss formula to determine a champion, so not ranking an album neither helps nor hurts it.

You will have until the end of 2021 to make a nomination and then all of January to listen to them.

Any album of newly recorded songs released in 2021 is eligible as long as it’s not in the top 50 of the Mega-Critic chart, or the sort of album that underperformed in initial reviews but is likely to appear highly on lots of year end lists. (Which is left up to your own judgment call and the spirit of the game.)

What do you all think about Cassandra Jenkins' An Overview on Phenomenal Nature? It's well out of the top 50, but I suspect it might do a bit better than that in the end of year lists. I'm on the fence about nominating it.

It's #32 currently on EOY. I can't predict it will rise or fall, but if it keeps it's current placement it would very likely make AM's album top 3000. I would keep such an album out of this game, but that's just my opinion.

It’s very consistently on lists. I believe it’s risen since the last update, so I’d say probably keep it out of the game.

For the best album that is inexplicably outside the top 50 of the Mega Chart and almost completely absent in the EOY lists so far:

I’ll nominate Hybrid - Black Halo.

I’m not sure anyone but Popmatters even reviewed it but it’s top 5 for me.

Kanye West - Donda

As a massive fan, I can safely say it is far from his best album but is nowhere near as bad as some critics made it out to be when it came out. On Albumoftheyear ut has a critic score of 57/100 which is in my opinion obscure considering critic averages on that site are almost always higher than 65/100. It is nearing 50 on the chart because some Critics appearantly don’t dislike it as much as it seems though.

Cassandra Jenkins is indeed doing too well now to nominate.

For now, I'll go for something less known: Wardruna - Kvitravn

It’s so good! If I remember correctly I think both of us put it at #1 in the 2021-so-far poll

Yes indeeeeed, it's not moved from my top spot! Did you get any further with your belated all-time songs list by the way, FL? I'd still be keen to have a peek!

I’m only about halfway done at this point but I finally have some free time coming up with the holidays so I’m going to try and catch up over the next month!

I had almost finished picking all my favorite 90’s tracks but then I finally did a deep dive into Blur’s discography and loved it so that really threw a wrench in my progress…

Mmmm tough choice !
For winning purposes, the latest Sufjan Stevens should do very well in this contest.

However, I'll go with my tastes for the better latest Biffy Clyro album

So, Biffy Clyro - The Myth of the Happily Ever After

i gave it some thought, and I'd be open to swapping in something else if it doesn't feel too in the spirit or if it starts cranking up the EOY list, but I'm thinking I'll go with Deafheaven - Infinite Granite.

I've been thinking about this so much and I found it really hard to decide because there was a lot of great, interesting music this year that got barely any attention by critics.

Since I'm aware of the status of jazz, classical and metal here, I choose my favorite pop album of the year (which will probably finish in my EOY Top 5):

Magdalena Ganter | Neo Noir

I was thinking about nominating San Salvador, but I trust everybody interested already checked out the album after the mid-year songs poll.

파란노을 [Parannoul] - To See the Next Part of the Dream

This one has gained some decent traction on RYM, not as much over here. So I figured I'd try and change that.

My Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp picks for the best songs of the year so far poll didn't fare too well, so I'll pivot to The Notwist - Vertigo Days, which is a better album if less original. (I expected rumpdoll to nominate it first !)

It was a coin toss. But now that you did it makes the first time that three of my favorite albums of the year are nominated

…I’ve been listening to that album on Spotify all year, even physically bought it, and did not notice that until now.
