We can keep carrying the torch for TVoTR, the best indie rock band of the 2000s! I will always be a supportive voter for Wolf Like Me and DLZ, both of which I think have aged very well.

By the way Zorg where were you when we voted? :greetings-waveyellow:
Ha! :greetings-waveyellow:

Haven't been round these parts for the last couple of years (or indeed listening to much in the way of new music for that matter), but am keen to get back on the horse! I've been blitzing some albums that were released this year and have found it more enjoyable than I thought it would, including my current favourite of Mercurial World which was at your recommendation. So i'm keen to give 2022 a good shot and leave some of my old favourites which i know back to front on a shelf somewhere.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of this poll and getting back into the nerdery of AM and AMF (Nevermind at #2??? :o Alright as the best song of the 2010s?? :-? etc etc)

Thought this was a fun co-incidence.

Also extremely happy to see/help Downtown Train slide into the top 500!

Playlist is updated to 401.

Alright as the best song of the 2010s?? :-?
I listened to Butterfly pretty cold, and wouldn't have picked that as the best tune on the album even, let alone the decade. Maybe it was easy for writers to write about. I just looked at the EOY 2015 and it finished 6th of the year, 2nd from the album. Shrug.

The Blacker the Berry is a better pick from TPaB, and I'm glad to see it in our top 500, and above Alright, on this list. That said, Alright's position on AM is in part because of cultural influence and popularity, and it's an impressive song musically in its own right, so I don't find its ranking that odd.

In some ways I feel like there has been a shift away from indie rock and toward classic rock and pop since AMF 10 years ago. The Flaming Lips can't get either of their big songs in the top 400?

That list of biggest fans for the Foreigner song reads like a bizarro world AMF; that song may make for an interesting voter/non-voter comparison list after the results are unveiled.

Happy to see the Foreigner song do so well (my 292nd fave of all time). Classic pop seems to be outpacing classic hard rock.

There are very few hip hop songs that crack my top 1000. But I'm enjoying your enthusiasm for this genre - even if I do not yet share it.

Zorg wrote: Sun Jan 02, 2022 1:57 pm Interested to see Wolf Like Me drop so much - it seems as if it just didn't have the volume of votes, even though there were some folk who placed it highly. More generally I wonder whether TV on the Radio are suffering from the passage of time more than most of their contemporaries (which would be a shame, imo.
They sure do, though maybe not more than Animal Collective (unfortunately) and less than the Rapture (also unfortunately) or Hot Chip (even more unfortunately). The drop of Staring at the Sun was even steeper, which is a shame, that song is fantastic.
I'm wondering if in the long run DLZ could be their song with the most staying power, it already climbed to 2nd of their songs in our list and I think it's as unique as any of their song but has a more timeless feel and sound.
Probably won't help much but it also has one of the best uses in a tv show ever in Breaking Bad.

I'll keep on plugging TV on the Radio as well, as a band, their biggest albums and those two songs in particular (besides others).

Might have been some supporters here (along with a friend) who got me into them in the first place some time after Dear Science had dropped.

76 votes for "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor"?? That would mean it made every single list!

I was thinking about how badly the 2010's are doing in these higher regions, just when I went past Your Best American Girl, which made a massive leap. Still, it beggars then question whether a relatively recent song can only get high here if it also has massive critical support. A bit the same problem as with pre-60s songs perhaps.

Hymie | 728
Wezzo | 573
That's a massive gap between these two. Looks like Hymie domination is going to be as strong as ever in Biggest Fan. Unless his contribution is too controversial?
Rob | 187
Damn, I went down with 13 songs! And I tried so hard to be unique!

By the way, I will start Biggest Fan Songs as soon as this roll-out finishes. Can you provide me with the Excell when it's done, Holden?

I feel less strongly about including him for Biggest Fan than I did for including his ballot. How many of his songs showed up in the last Biggest Fan? (Would taking out repeats help?)

I also think you forgot to add in the artist and year for Sex Machine. Other than that, great roll-out! Excited to get to the top 200!

203 songs for me on Biggest Fan! Don't know if that's more or less than last time, but I do know at least a couple of the songs I had last time aren't eligible this time (Rasputin, Edge of Town, You Spin Me Round, and Minnie the Moocher in particular).

I admit, the big rises for "O Superman" and "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" definitely caught me off guard. Very glad to see sizable rises for "Train in Vain" and "Lovesong" back to back!

"Where Is My Mind" is the first drop from the top 100, correct?

Look at Nick simply doubling his eligible songs for Biggest Fan!

I noticed that the 201-300 group consist for a lot of songs that weren't in that bracket of 100 last time, with quite a few going down. I wonder which will rise instead of them.

Despite listening to them more than a dozen times each:

Aeroplane Over the Sea does nothing for me (4.2 out of 10 - a bit disappointing).

But, at least it isn't as consistently annoying as O Superman (1 out of 10 - terrible).

Those rises were great, as is Construcao, Killing Moon, the two Portishead tracks, 21st Century Schizoid Man, and Take Five. I didn't mind most of the fallers in that section outside of Someone Great and 1979, both of which still get better every time I hear them.

221. The Jimi Hendrix Experience | "Purple Haze" (1967)

220. The Jimi Hendrix Experience | "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (1968)

Is it just me that gets a little irritated when the same artist appears in a sequel, with no other song to separate them?

By the way Jimi is not doing so well this time, I hope that at least All Along the Watchtower can hold back

This is just a tangent, but... has anyone else here realized that "Spotlight" and "Levitating" have almost the exact same chorus? It's most certainly a coincidence given they were released around the same time, but this is something I've noticed since the very first time I heard Lipa's song (which was nearly a year after I'd first heard Ware's song, because I'm out of touch and out of time), yet I've never seen anyone else acknowledge this aside from a single RYM user, despite how popular both songs are in the same circles.

I'm pretty surprised my biggest fan number went down, as I thought the newer songs in my list would be less likely than the ones that dropped to be shared with others. Could be a result of more or different people voting that share my taste.

I'm a big fan of both Spotlight and Levitating, have listened to both a bunch of times, and I don't hear the similarity between them at all.

So, when we go from 2018 to 2021 either people start to discover single vote songs or the other way around, you start to vote for songs that others suggested three years earlier. Innaresting. Should have been real cool to see what happened between 2018 and 2021 in this regard.

Accomodating or adjusting?

Conclusion: Is it common to have around 200-500 indvidual single vote songs? On a top 1000 list? Many single vote songs might just be "forgotten" to vote for or others must be explored. Songs from different cultures hide in the numbers as well. I see a big role for the "biggest fan" voting here. Maybe a focus could be "single vote" songs top 100 or 200 on individual lists etc.

I heard them today and didn't notice any overt resemblance.
I think Spootlight doesn't even follow a traditional pop music structure, in it the chorus is not so easy to identify.

But since the subject is conspiracy theories and plagiarism, my friends noticed that the part of the song Debaser where the singer says "un chien andalusia", sounds the same as the saxophone solo of the song Theme de Yo-Yo.

Despite listening to them more than a dozen times each:

Aeroplane Over the Sea does nothing for me (4.2 out of 10 - a bit disappointing).

But, at least it isn't as consistently annoying as O Superman (1 out of 10 - terrible).
You didn't like it because you didn't understand the concept of airplane music, indie rock is always disappointing by nature.

"O Superman" did not appeal to all listeners. According to the 1982 book The Rock Lists Album, compiled by John Tobler and Allan Jones, polls conducted by several unidentified British newspapers saw "O Superman" voted readers' least favourite hit single of 1981 (even though the song had been championed by John Peel).

I suppose I do appreciate minimalism when it evokes emotions that I find compelling or powerful. O Superman evoked annoyance for me. I realize that others found it to be fantastic and unconventional and I admire them for their enjoyment of the song.

In 2015, Katherine S. Caughlin's comment on O Superman included:
Minimalism, a style popularized by classical music composers in the1960s and 70s, utilizes musical devices including rhythmic and melodic repetition, a steady pulse, drones, and gradual transitions extensively and can be found in Anderson’s work. Normally, in minimalism as a classical music movement, composers strip music down to its most simple and primal form, and explore the intricacies and inner workings of music. In most of the minimalist classical genre, as well as in trance and electronic music, there seems to be an emphasis on composing and hearing the music without a story being formulated along with it. Laurie Anderson uses minimalist techniques, but as anyone who has heard her music could tell you, her works are especially brilliant concerning narrative. I would argue that Anderson is actually using a dual minimalist technique. She employs this technique in her musical composition, but also through the language she uses, and the way she uses and performs this language.

jamieW. 115 386 (a rise by 271 songs)
Yep, that's exactly right. I infamously waited until the last minute last time and pretty much completed my entire list in one night, only able to rank about 450 songs or so. This time, I somehow managed a top 1000, so I knew my numbers would rise dramatically (especially since tons of my personal favorites are either really obscure or painfully unacclaimed).

It's also possible/probable that some of the changes are due to the different population contributing between the two years. I wasn't here last time; if my taste aligns significantly with Person Y, they're likely to have fewer single votes even if their list didn't change.
