Biggest Fan Songs - 2nd Edition: 1 to 100

Post by Rob »

So we come to it at last: the second edition of Biggest Fan Songs!

For those who are new to this, let me copy-paste the explanation I made for the preparation topic:

It is a little game where I daily present one song that comes from someone's list for the the All Time Song poll. It's not just any song though: the only eligible ones are those that only got one single vote during the whole nomination process. Usually this means you'll get something obscure or, according to the nominator, underrated. The daily song is not chosen by me, but by the impartial website www.random.org (through an assigned number to each song). Every day you can grade the picked track on a scale from 1 to 10. You don't have to vote on the day the song is picked; you can always catch up. Every time we have done 100 I reveal the current average scores in a top 100 presentation. Last time we ended with a top 1000, with Johnny Cash' The Man Comes Around at #1.

There is a small change in the formula this time, based on a good idea by BleuPanda. Besides the songs I also numbered the users who made a list. First I draw a user number and than a number for his songs and the corresponding one will be the song of the day. A user only gets a new song if everyone had their turn. There are 75 lists, so it will take that many days for everyone to have their turn.

Another thing to note is that songs that were part of the first edition do not return. By the way, if you are new or missed the poll deadline, don't fret: you can still participate.

Here is the playlist. I'll always put it in my top comment of a new page. The newest song is always at the top of the playlist, so it will end up in reverse order.

Now, without further ado...

Now that we are all set for this new edition of Biggest Fan we need a first song. And let’s face it, is there anyone on this forum more deserving of opening this game than Whuntva? Well, not according to Random.org. The random god even selected a top 100 song from Whuntva! It was only just released when we did our last poll. There is also the possibility that this will be the only song we’ll get that was written to promote Bionicle, but you never know.

1. Cryoshell, featuring Budapest Art Orchestra – Gravity Hurts
Year: 2018
Released as a single
Biggest Fan: whuntva (#80)

Though not part of my suggestion, I like the addition of everyone getting a turn.

Cryoshell, featuring Budapest Art Orchestra – Gravity Hurts: 4
I'd love nothing more than saying that the new edition of Biggest Fan starts with a keeper, but I didn't think this was very good. It is one of those epic tracks that accompanies a lot of games and cartoons. Sometimes, when I love the game or cartoon in question it can become a little bit of a guilty pleasure, but that's not the case here. It doesn't help that the orchestral arrangement goes beyond cheesy into tacky.

It should be noted that this song had a weird history. A short version was recorded for the commercial in 2008, but the full song wasn't recorded until 2017, for a 2018 release. Oddly, Cryoshell released three different versions that year. The one on the playlist is "the original", the first to be released and the one based on the commercial fragment. The other two versions are not orchestral. Whuntva didn't specifically mention any of the three versions, which all have a different featured artist, so if this is not the favored recording, I like to hear about it (though personally, I have now heard all three and wouldn't give any a better rating).

My neurons activated seeing that we're starting this game with a Bionicle song, but sadly it's from after I grew out of them. I fondly remember the first movie. This song is fine, I prefer the older alt-rock version which would be a 6 or 7.

1. Cryoshell ft. Christine & Budapest Art Orchestra | "Gravity Hurts": 6/10

Not bad at all. Relistening to all the 60s song for the poll made me aware of how hard it is to get a string arrangement right. This is a bit overdone, but it fits to the mood the song is going for, so I won't complain about that. Maybe also a bit less Autotune would have been good too.

This is isn't bad at all
Yes it's anthemic and a bit generic, but it's catchy.

6/10

Edit : I listened to the rock version, this is not so catchy, a lot of autotune, which I cannot stand.

3/10

Biggest Fan is such a great idea - thanks for running it Rob. The first edition was in full swing when I joined & I only got part way through - this time bring it on!

This one is nice enough but not something I'd seek out to hear again.

Thanks for doing this again Rob! Time for me to participate as well.

Cryoshell, featuring Budapest Art Orchestra – Gravity Hurts: 3

Sorry to give the starting song such a low score, but I agree with Rob that this is just too cheesy. For my ears anyway. Maybe the rockier version would work a little bit better?

The second entry belonged to the person who suggested changes to the structure Biggest Fan Songs, which I adapted a little. Their first “pick” is the first one that ranks on AM, at #5604. Are they wrong?

2. Anderson .Paak, featuring ScHoolboy Q – Am I Wrong
Year: 2016
Album: Malibu
Biggest Fan: BleuPanda (#540)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your grade.

I love this album, but this song isn’t one I’d pick as a highlight of the top of my head, which I suppose speaks to the albums quality that this song is so good.

2. Anderson .Paak, featuring ScHoolboy Q – Am I Wrong: 6.3 (my 5854th fave of all time)

Silk Sonic is one my favorite artists that started in the past 5-20 years. I hope that the duo can put out a few more albums.

When Todd Rundgren was asked (in 2019) which newer contemporary artists intrigued him, he responded with Anderson .Paak.

Anderson .Paak, featuring ScHoolboy Q – Am I Wrong: 6
I remember that this album was very popular in my social circles when it came out, though that never actually made me listen to it on my own. Am I Wrong is more or less what I remembered what my reaction was to when I heard Anderson .Paak at my friends: it is good and I don't mind listening to it, but it just lacks something for me to really give into its chill party grooves. Like I want it to go further; perhaps embrace the ecstatic a little more.

On a side note, using a dot in the middle of a name should be strictly forbidden by law.

Reading "Am I Wrong" I thought this was about that song I always heard on the radio, but apparently that's by a duo called Nico & Vinz. This is pretty bland, to be honest and not something I want to return to.

Could have been a bit boring but the ScHoolboy feature followed by the trumpet drop at the end allowed this song to do enough to be liked by me.

Next up is a selection by mileswide, who participated in last edition of Biggest Fan, but didn’t have entries of his own. That changed this time around. Here’s hoping he’ll do fine.

3. Beck – Guess I’m Doing Fine
Year: 2002
Album: Sea Change
Biggest Fan: mileswide (#306)

Beck – Guess I’m Doing Fine: 7
Around the time Morning Phase was just released I was doing something of a quick binge of all Beck's albums. Perhaps strangely considering it is one of his big classics, Sea Change was the one I connected with the least. I've never tried it again though. Perhaps I should.

This is quite a nice song. Nothing groundbreaking, but it sells his emotion. I once learned Beck is a big fan of Hank Williams and although Beck luckily does not try to imitate Hank's vocals, this sounds like a song in which the influence is clear. Hank sure would have appreciated the slide guitar.
