I don’t know how Live in Phoenix selects the songs for his list, but it has apparently little to do with if artists play live in Phoenix. Whereas his previous entry Suzanne Vega has been a no-show for a long time in that city, today’s Peabo Bryson apparently never held a concert in Phoenix. Then again, it seems that Bryson never toured much. Not even when he had a hit with today’s song.

See, I thought his name was just a tourist slogan saying we should live in Phoenix. The English language is funky like that. What isn’t funky is If Ever You’re in My Arms Again, which I give a 2. Don’t worry, I plan on going back to all the songs I’ve missed and I’m sure there’s at least an 8 in there.

Nice DJ intro, there. I almost caught Vega in Scottsdale (east of Phoenix) many years ago, but the show was cancelled for some reason. The explanation for my name is that it's like an advertisement for a concert or event; there's a bonus feeble extra layer in the sense that when I'm posting online, I'm coming to you live in Phoenix. It traces back to a pro wrestling message board I was on almost 20 years ago. Why just call yourself Logan? We've got some stage names here as well, I'm pretty well used to it, and it's become sort of a special phrase -- some wonderful event or performer is coming through your little old town.Rob wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2022 8:58 am I don’t know how Live in Phoenix selects the songs for his list, but it has apparently little to do with if artists play live in Phoenix. Nonetheless, I'm afraid that if Peabo Bryson every goes live in Nijmegen (let alone Phoenix) I will not attend. This I find unbearably sappy.

Re: Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 101 to 200
After Acroamor recently got an ineligible song he gets his retry for the second round with today’s song; one which I’m sure we haven’t done before. This appearance gave me three surprises: despite being a well-known evergreen it was not a hit, it is not on AM and got no other votes in our poll. Makes you wonder how it even is an evergreen.
John Denver recorded it three times: 1. a demo in 1966 that was only available as a present for friends, but never officially released (I don’t count this one for the date); 2. again for his 1969 debut album and finally 3. for a Greatest Hits compilation in 1973. This last version is the famous one, so I go for that on the playlist. If Acroamor disagrees I’ll change it.
134. John Denver – Leaving on a Jet Plane
Year: 1969 / 1973
Album: Rhymes & Reasons / John Denver’s Greatest Hits
Biggest Fan: Acroamor (#271)

Peter, Paul and Mary's 1969 single hit Number One, then Denver had a career breakthrough in 1971. The greatest hits album was a blockbuster hit, so somewhere in all of that it became one of his signature songs. Denver and PPM's versions are similar enough that it's not a "Blinded by the Light" situation where you have a Number One-penned song that doesn't sound much like you.
John Denver – Leaving on a Jet Plane: 7
I played the PPM version, then called up the Essential John Denver version, which sounded kind of awful, but that must have been the older version; the Greatest Hits version practically sounds fancy in comparison, and is generally an improvement.

It's fine country, but I don't know why of all songs here this is gathering so many high votes. Than again, I rarely ever get anything Jeff Tweedy is involved with.
John Denver – Leaving on a Jet Plane: 9
I never knew the Peter Paul & Mary version, but I now noticed that it actually ranks on AM. Perhaps their version is more well-known than Denver's in the US? Around here it certainly isn't, but their version didn't chart in The Netherlands (though neither did Denver's).
Now that I have listened to both Peter Paul & Mary and John Denver's versions I have to say that is a nice example of two takes that stay close to each other, but still clearly have other interests. The PPM version is clearly there to highlight their special vocal harmonies and is beautifully arranged for voices, but guitar and bass are pretty much asked to retreat to the far background. Denver on the other hand goes for a double guitar sound (and also a fine bass). I really like the sound of his instruments. Of course he doesn't do harmonies, but he really makes the song soar in the great chorus. Certainly a song that deserves to rank on AM on its own merits. Likely to make my top 1000 next time around.

Records are made to be broken. Today Jackson breaks the record for longest song on Biggest Fan 2nd Edition, beating the Steve Reich track by two minutes. Anyone dares to go over these 20 minutes?

Once again with this band the tension is build very slowly and there is an extended release. It still works though.

Now for something much shorter. Today’s surf instrumental isn’t the 1962 classic by The Chantays, but a cover done only a year later by The Ventures. They were a group who could perfectly create their own songs, but like a lot of sixties acts they covered a truckload too. Is this better than the original?

The Chantays' original has a more unique arrangement. The Ventures make it more conventional and slick, which would be a bad thing if it didn't also rock very well.
