Renan returns with a smash hit, albeit one of those semi-recent hits that I don’t think I actually heard before. But how can over a billion streams on Spotify be wrong?
Just a note for the grammar police: the lowercase in the main artist’s name and the song title is correct.
127. gnash, featuring Olivia O’Brien – i hate u, i love u
Year: 2016
EP: Us
Biggest Fan: Renan (#465)

Well, it's a lot better than recent megahit Meant to Be, but that ain't saying much. It's mostly harmless fluff.

I still have to catch up with these but I can at least give a score to the one song I’ve heard: i hate u, i love u is a generous 2. I’m sorry! Not my taste!

Joe Satriani – Always with Me, Always with You: 7
This song is getting destroyed here. Not completely deserved. Sure it is cheesy, but at least it is fun cheese. The intro sounds like a singer is about to come up to sing the schmaltziest ballad of the eighties. Instead, Satriani basically jumps straight into the slow, "heart-felt", crying guitar solo that would normally happen in the second half of said ballad. As per usual with Satriani I sometimes wish he would be part of a band that could gives his solos more purpose, but as is I can enjoy it.

Satriani's mastery of the guitar doesn't translate for everyone, but it works wonders for me.
This song is so amazing that I have three different versions to recmommend.
In my view, the best is the version on the Surfing with the Alien album - even if it's less than 4 minutes long.
My second favorite version is from Satriani Live! and is almost 10 minutes long. Both of these versions are amazing.
The KFOG live version is also less than 4 minutes long and isn't quite as good as the other two versions.

From the guitar pyrotechnics of Satriani we’re now going a simpler but not less iconic approach to the guitar, by the Ramones. Honorio didn’t go to their more acclaimed seventies output, but instead chose an eighties song with a title that has kept people guessing what inspired it.

Advantages of music nerdery. "KKK" was always one of my favourite Ramones song but when I learned the story behind I liked it even more. Joey Ramone's girlfriend, Linda Daniele, cheated on him and began a relationship with Johnny Ramone. Due to their well-known political differences (Joey showed sympathy for the left while Johnny was overtly conservative), Joey referred to Johnny is his song as "the KKK." So you all know, the KKK was no other than Johnny Ramone, the one that took his baby away.

The Wikipedia page for the song mentions this as a potential interpretation of the song, but other people who knew Joey Ramone had other explanations as well. Joey himself apparently never gave his own take.Honorio wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 1:53 pm 129. Ramones – The KKK Took My Baby Away (1981) 10/10

Odd subject aside, this is another Ramone song in their classic sound, which by the time this released had perhaps been over-used. I don't quite feel the energy as strongly as on their best work. It's solid overall, but I feel that it is indeed the lyrics that have to pull me in. Those lyrics are memorable enough to do it, although they aren't particularly enlightening.

Just read the wikipedia page and you're right, it's an interpretation not confirmed by the author. I learned about the story behind thanks to the "End of the Centrury" rockumentary. The think that's true is that the affair between Linda and Johnny Ramone (that ended as marriage) poisoned the relationship between Johnny and Joey Ramone. Both remained in the band but were not on speaking terms until the end of their lives.

“According to Joey’s brother Michael Leigh, the true inspiration for the song was Joey’s former girlfriend Wilna, an African-American woman he dated in the early 1970s until their parents’ objections tore them apart. The basic melody of the song had been floating around for a little while (inspired by Cheap Trick’s “He’s a Whore”) and the tune was completely finished by the time that Joey broke up with Linda. Still, when Joey spat out the lyrics on tour after the split, it was hard to not think they were aimed squarely at Johnny.”

Like in the previous Biggest Fan, Dexter has some classical music ready to go. It comes without specific recording, so as per usual I just take the first version that comes up on Spotify. Technically speaking this is now the oldest song we had in this edition of Biggest Fan, although that does not go for the specific recording.

Year: 1844
Concerto: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64

I've listened to a few versions now. I replaced the one I originally had on the playlist as it seems to have been just the most recent recording, but it sounded a bit stale. Every other recording I heard sounded more lively. And "lively" is certainly what this composition seems to be all about. I don't know a thing about Mendelssohn or what sets him apart from other classical composers, but this work fits in a kind of spring-time vibe that works pretty well.

Tracy Chapman’s self-titled debut is of course a classic as well as a big selling album with well-known hits like Fast Car and Talkin’ Bout a Revolution. Today Listyguy directs us to one of its less famous tracks.
