The Netherlands had a couple of hot days and I’ve been waiting for the rain; listening for the weather you might say. Today’s artist from New Zealand knows what I’m talking about. So does SafetyCat, presumably.

161. Bic Runga – Listening for the Weather
Year: 2003
Album: Beautiful Collision
Biggest Fan: SafetyCat (#987)

I think I only heard Hail to the Thief once and I don't recall this song. It reminds me a lot of Pyramid Song, which also has a boating theme going on. I just love the atmosphere in this.

Bic Runga – Listening for the Weather: 7
Sounds like on of those cute girl singer/songwriter type of songs, but it has a better melody and a bit of a better singer.

We’re island-hopping as we go from New Zealand to Cuba for today’s offering. Although the song’s origin is American – it is a composition by Herbie Hancock – it is typical for panam to go for a more Latin version. He isn’t the only one, as Mongo Santamaría’s recording became a bigger hit than Hancock’s. It ranks on AM at #2535, rather slightly under Hancock’s #2440 ranking.

162. Mongo Santamaría – Watermelon Man
Year: 1963
Album: Watermelon Man
Biggest Fan: panam (#438)

110. Bebe Rexha, featuring Florida George Line - Meant to Be : 4
109. Brave Little Abacus - Pile! No Pile! Pile! : 6,5 : color me intrigued… I like a lot of the recent emo/punkrock revival wave and this has the potential for delivering… I'm not sure all of its parts really coalesce together though (I don't mind how much the singer is a Dead Milkmen soundalike, though I did indeed fit a bit better with the Dead Milkmen utter silliness)
108. Fabolous - You Be Killin Em : 7,5
107. Bread - Aubrey : 7
106. Boy & Bear - Fall at Your Feet : 8
105. Arcade Fire - We Don't Deserve Love : 7
104. The Waterboys - I Will Not Follow : 6,5
103. TC Matic - O La La La : 6
102. Wilco - She's a Jar : 6,5
101. Thrice - Daedalus : 6 : that's a band whose musical trajectory I really didn't enjoy ; I like their early hardcorish sound, especially on The Illusion of Safety which is still one of my favorite album ever and I don't think has ever been topped in its specific genre, but everything I heard from them afterwards I have found kinda boring. Congrats for trying to constantly evolve, but I'll stick with your early tracks thanks.

152. Mirwais – Naïve Song - 5 That's some autotune ! I recognised this and I do like the electro bass. You can hear his influence on Madonna's "Music" album.
153. Frank Turner - Photosynthesis (Truck Sessions) - 6.5
154. Wilco – Spiders (Kidsmoke): Wilco go Krautrock - a GREAT song. 9
155. 酒井省吾 [Shogo Sakai] – Master Porky’s Theme: 3.5
156. Tame Impala - Patience: 3
157. Sarah Vaughan – Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: 2
158. 4hero, featuring Carina Andersson – Les Fleur: 9
I actually discovered this before the original and I think it's better. I was indeed enthralled by this in the UK. Don't understand why the "s" is mising.
159. Echo & the Bunnymen - Monkeys: 8.5
160. Radiohead - Sail to the Moon: 7
161. Bic Runga – Listening for the Weather: 6

111. Carla Bozulich, featuring Marc Ribot - End of the World : 4,5 Fun fact : I always prepare for the worst when I see Marc Ribot name, but only because I confuse him with Patrick Rondat. I didn't enjoy the song but I'm still glad it's not some epic guitar bull****

Mongo Santamaría – Watermelon Man: 8
I haven't checked, but I suspect I have heard this in countless films. I guess for tropical sound it can hardly be beat. Jazz at its most accessible.

Fabricio de André – Al Ballo Mascherato: 7
Sounds like a fun ball. Perhaps that is only because I don't speak Italian, as I'm sure at least the word 'morire' appeared here, but at least the sound is upbeat.

163. Fabrizio De André | "Al ballo mascherato": 9/10

Here's a translation of the lyrics on a blog translating and explaining a lot of De André's music:

http://deandretranslated.blogspot.com/2 ... erato.html

The song most certainly does not depict a "fun ball" (though I can see where the idea would come from  ), but rather it presents the fantasies of a working class man about blowing up symbols of culture. He fantasizes about bringing a bomb to the masked ball and exposing the 'higher classes' as hypocrites.
Storia di un impiegato is a concept album, and this song lays the foundation for the later song "Il bambarolo", where the same worker decides to do a terrorist attack on parliament with a bomb, but the bomb fails to go off.

Gonna do a quick catch-up here, just tracks I know well enough, and mainly inspired by the fact that I was shocked I didn't vote for a bunch of these 'cause I think I had in past polls. I'd be disappointed in myself, except it gave me another chance to bring these tracks into the spotlight a bit...

160. Radiohead – Sail to the Moon - 5
I do like a lot of what Radiohead do, but I'm not so keen on the slow-drawn-out-wailing type of song like this.
161. Bic Runga – Listening for the Weather - 9
Bic Runga is probably one of NZ's most accomplished singer-songwriters; she's actually on AM, for one thing, for her big hit, Sway. The song itself is light and maybe a bit thin, but it always makes me happy.
162. Mongo Santamaría – Watermelon Man - 6
Good but I would prefer it without the vocalisations.
163. Fabricio de André – Al Ballo Mascherato - 7
This guy (as in, Fabirico) seems cool, I like his style and his song concepts. Someone to look into later.

This song feels like a late attempt to cash into grunge, but where nothing of the original inspiration had run out and now we only get every single cliché, in vocals, music and lyrics.

Arsalan had frequently commented on this forum that Twenty One Pilots is an underrated band. Critics indeed have barely ranked them, as there is only one bubbling under album and one bubbling song on the official AM ranking. Arsalan on the other hand has more than a few songs by the band eligible for this game. How do you feel about this song?

Less overtly pop as their later hits, more indie rock, with an added dash of hip-hop. It isn't particularly remarkable.

I do think Critics underrate Twenty One Pilots. Their music is really catchy imo, especially their 2018 album, Trench.

Fall Away is an interesting track from their debut record but I don't expect music lovers to find it as interesting as I did.
