Although Joe Cocker wrote the occasional song himself, every single one he is actually known for is a cover. I guess Up Where We Belong is an original, but he didn't write that either.

Joe Cocker – You Can Leave Your Hat On: 8
This is actually a good cover, that sets itself apart of the original, which seems shy in comparison. The force that Cocker adds to the song is quite great if you ask me.

Jackson’s next pick is by an oddly named band, but then again his last pick was by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, which is an even weirder name which we just got used to. Some might remember today’s act from last week’s Moderately Acclaimed Albums game.

This manages to sound as both a blues rock song and as a Steve Miller Band song. No mean feat. Quite a cool song.

Look, the most important Biggest Fan entry of each year is the one for July 3rd. Why? Because it is my birthday and I expect a birthday gift from both Random.org and one of my fellow forum folks. Past years gave me songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and… Yung Hurn (I don’t remember this one at all). This year the honor goes to BleuPanda, who lands a song by FKA Twigs. I like her a lot, but I haven’t heard the specific EP this one’s on. Will it turn out to be the best birthday present of all time? The critics at least like it, as it ranks on AM at a respectable #2098.

FKA Twigs – Water Me: 7
As much as I love FKA Twigs, this song now feels as a dry run for many of the better songs that came later. There is still a lot of appeal here though, as she does create compelling electronic spaces.

We stay in 2013 as Kanye West joins the slowly growing group of artists who have two songs appearing in this edition of Biggest Fan. His previous one was more of a deep cut, but today’s entry is famous enough that I’m surprised it only was on musicman’s list (and even then barely; it’s their lowest-ranking eligible song). The critics liked it quite a bit and give it a ranking of #3663 on AM.

Kanye West – Blood on the Leaves: 1
Oh dear, a rare 1. First of all, a lot of this is almost literally an unlistenable song for me. Some of the high pitches of the autotune hurt my ears in a very direct way. I still don't buy the myth that it makes West a good singer. He still sings off-key and no autotune could fix that. For some reason he also sees fit to posthumously mangle Nina Simone's voice through the same autotune.
It gets even worse when you think what the song is actually about. It's about fame destroying a marriage. That's fine, but what on earth possesses Kanye West to compare this to the lynching of Afro-Americans? Why of all the billions of songs he could sample he chose Strange Fruit? It is so mind-bogglingly stupid in the specific way only Kanye West can manage. And he gets praised for it, for some reason. I will never understand this. Sure the beats are massive, but not enough to save my ears or mind.

Yesterday we may have had Yeezus, but today we get an act whose main genre is actual Jesus music. After Our Prayer Father2TheMan is back with some more religious music. Do you need to be a believer to appreciate it?

Sweet Comfort Band - Isabel: 5
Not the easiest song to rate. Among Christian rock I have heard far worse. The lyrics are clearly religious, being about a reborn Christian shunned by her previous community, although the focus is on the support the band and the Christian community at large can give. I can understand why some people can relate to this. It's not quite for me though. Curiously, this is a song that is most weak at the chorus. After a few listens it becomes a bit annoying.

I listened to Graduation and Yeezus for the Bonus Round game; Graduation fared well, but Yeezus tried my patience a little -- and that was the last of the "classic" albums.
