Kate Bush-The Dreaming
Alice Coltrane-Journey to Satchidananda

Private Press is a fine album, it just had the misfortune of drawing a tournament favorite.

Satchidananda is yet another record I am shocked is not listed on AM at all.

I’d say satchidananda is the one I’m MOST shocked is not listed, above any other unlisted album.

It doesn't seem to be happening for me with The Reform Sessions. It really is available nowhere online in The Netherlands. I found one single, affordable copy for sale on CD, but it seems to have gotten lost in the mail. Unless someone has any way to hear it that I don't know (so no links to Spotify or other high profile streaming services) I'm afraid I won't be able to vote for 100% of the albums this year. I'm beginning to suspect that The Reform Sessions is the one album the Dutch government doesn't want you to hear.

Sorry Rob but I'm afraid I can't help. In Spain it is available on every streaming service, including Spotify, YouTube music, Apple, Soundcloud or Deezer. But I can't find it on other sites like music.mp3.ru or gaana.com. So sorry...

Karen ann and Reform Sessions are my last votes.

Song of the week: "Das Jahr 2000" by Hildegard Knef

I'm travelling this week, so I may not get to vote. But I am glad I finished this week.

I’d say satchidananda is the one I’m MOST shocked is not listed, above any other unlisted album.
Same, it's 5 star on allmusic and I always saw it treated like a classic by the publications I read.

1. DJ Shadow - The Private Press
2 albums that suffer the comparison with their author most acclaimed work.
The Dreaming is possibly even more audacious and artsy than Hounds of Love, but Hounds of Love nails those qualities while also being insanely catchy and anthemic, The Dreaming has the brains and the guts but I miss the heart and the fun.
Private Press is no Endtroducing in the sense that it is not an incredible once in a decade masterpiece but also because, probably realizing he would not be able top his first outing, DJ Shadow decided to try something else. It is a bit too disjointed but it mostly works, especially on one of my top 50 songs ever (but still only 2nd favorite DJ Shadow track) Blood on the Motorway

When I play polls or games like this I'm all or nothing. I either listen to everything or don't participate at all. I think this is the first time I didn't hear an album since participating. Hildegard Knef posthumously hurt me, although not as much as all of you who made sure that the album advances to the next week. I see what's going on.

2. Kate Bush - The Dreaming (1982) vs. 5. DJ Shadow - The Private Press (2002)
6. Keren Ann - Keren Ann (2007) vs. 4. Various Artists - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
1. Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda (1971) vs. 3. Akron/Family - Akron/Family (2005)

Some thoughts:
- P.G. Six's album couldn't get my vote, but I thought it was really interesting. In my mind The Reform Sessions is deeply inferior.
- The Dreaming is such a familiar album in this game that I'm actually surprised it is eligible again. I think it did very well a few years ago. Anyway, it is great. Together with Journey in Satchidananda it makes for two heavy hitters that might as well make up the finale.
- The Rocky Horror Picture Show was probably one of the most famous movies I had never seen, but I took this opportunity to give it a go. It is an infectious movie, of course largely thanks to the song. I think Little Nell's voice is not made for singing, but otherwise I also enjoy these songs on an album. It's mostly glam rock, a genre so fitting for musicals that its a shame there aren't many more of them.

5. Kate Bush - The Dreaming (1982) < 4. DJ Shadow - The Private Press (2002)
3. Keren Ann - Keren Ann (2007) < 1. Various Artists - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
8. Hildegard Knef - The Reform Sessions (2002) < 6. P.G. Six - The Well of Memory (2004)
2. Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda (1971) > 7. Akron/Family - Akron/Family (2005)

I found this a weak week overall, I really didn't connect with any of the albums...
Besides Rocky Horror, that is, which I rewatched the other day as well as listening through the album. I think the album is wonderful so it's a shame it's getting bodied by Keren.

And these are the winners of Round 1.13:
1. DJ Shadow - The Private Press over Kate Bush - The Dreaming 9-8
2. Keren Ann - Keren Ann over Various Artists - The Rocky Horror Picture Show 10-5
3. Hildegard Knef - The Reform Sessions over P.G. Six - The Well of Memory 7-6
4. Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda over Akron/Family - Akron/Family 13-2

Yes, you better believe it! The biggest surprise of the tournament so far. "The Dreaming," the album that 6 of you predicted it was going to be the winner of the whole tournament, has been eliminated on the first round by "The Private Press." Maybe the condition of favourite ("well, I won't vote for it because it's going to win anyway") hurted the possibilities of Kate Bush. Sadly, the album would have been a worthy winner. Maybe Alice Coltrane is now the best positioned for the final win? Time will tell...

Round 1.14 up next!
