Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1955

Post by Schüttelbirne »

Moving on to the first year that has its own dedicated polls for songs and albums!

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month we'll move on to 1956.

Deadline for this is the end of the month, July 31.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

I'm not going to claim to be an expert here but it seems to me like the Krupa and Rich album should be considered a 1956 release.

Discogs says it came out in May 1956 specifically:
https://www.discogs.com/release/2485274 ... a-And-Rich

RYM says 1955 release but both RYM and Discogs agree that it wasn't even RECORDED until November 1 of that year. Doesn't seem like much time for it to get mixed, mastered, album cover layed out and designed and rushed into stores for sale. It's possible I suppose but I wonder if there are any trade publication ads making that case?

On another note, this was the first I had heard the "Feudin' Banjos" cut and I can't believe how thoroughly they own the song vs. the 70s "Deliverance" cut. It's almost like they aren't even the same song! :o

I'm so glad that we went with doing all this pre-60s era over the whole year instead of all just lumped into one poll. I've always been interested in these early years and how they influenced the music that followed, so I've explored quite a bit in the past, but this is the first time I've really immersed myself and it's really thowing up some surprises. It's like lifting a veil, after some sustained listening none of this is sounding old fashioned any more - and especially the way we've been going through chronologically it's been like going back in time and hearing it all for the first time and seeing how fresh and innovative so much of it was. So a big thank you to the forum for inspiring these polls, and to Schüttelbirne for running it, and also to everyone submitting lists - I'm really enjoying checking out everyone's different picks!

(My apologies for the inconsistent formatting.

I am creating Excel spreadsheets for each poll I take part in with the goal of making future postings simply a matter of shifting them around and adding any BU (Bubbling Under) entries.

One of the columns is for the "source" of the song and/or album catalog number but it's the last thing I'm filling out each time in order to make sure I meet deadlines.)

Songs The first very solid year, with a fantastic top 10
It's july, lots of spare time for me, thus a big fat list ; afraid that 1956 (vacation) and 57 (september, terrible month for teachers) might be a little meager

1 | Georges Brassens | Je suis un voyou | "Qu'il (Dieu) me le pardonne ou non, d'ailleurs je m'en fous, j'ai déjà mon âme en peine, je suis un voyou" / If Gods forgives me or not, I don't care, my soul is already lost, I am a thug" A song that reminds me of my childhood, like all Brassens. The lyrics made a big impression on me.

ALBUMS:

1. FRANK SINATRA "In the Wee Small Hours" (#51 in my all-time list)
Not the first concept album (the award should go to Leadbelly or Woody Guthrie), but Sinatra's thorny love affair with Ava Gardner resulted in a highly cohesive album filled with heartache and despair. Since Sinatra was not a songwriter, the cohesiveness relies in an impeccable selection of glad-to-be-unhappy standards, in late-night musical arrangements (that celesta!) and, of course, in that desolate and heartbreaking Voice, with probably the best vocal performace ever recorded.

2. LOTTE LENYA "Lotte Lenya singt Kurt Weill" (#99)
More that twenty years after her exile, Lotte Lenya came back to Berlin to find the city in a period of recovery but with the wounds still open. Aptly she took up again where she left, giving new life to the songs from the old Weimar days, backing her fragile but expressive voice with out-of-tune pianos ("Bilbao Song") or amateur-sounding banjo and harmonium ("Moritat").

3. SARAH VAUGHAN "Sarah Vaughan"
4. JULIE LONDON "Julie Is Her Name"
5. PÉREZ PRADO & SHORTY ROGERS "Voodoo Suite (Plus 6 All-Time Greats)"
6. BILL HALEY AND HIS COMETS "Rock Around the Clock"
7. CLIFFORD BROWN & MAX ROACH "Study in Brown"
8. MAHALIA JACKSON "The World's Greatest Gospel Singer"
9. KENNY DORHAM "Afro-Cuban"
10. STAN GETZ "West Coast Jazz"
11. ANITA O’DAY "Anita"
12. HELEN MERILL "Helen Merill"
13. GENE KRUPA & BUDDY RICH "Krupa and Rich"
14. CHET BAKER "Sings and Plays with Bud Shank, Russ Freeman and Strings"
15. GEORGES BRASSENS "№ 3 [Les sabots d'Hélène]"
16. ASTOR PIAZZOLLA SU BANDONEÓN Y SUS CUERDAS "Sinfonia de tango"
17. BILLIE HOLIDAY "Music for Torching With Billie Holiday"
18. MILES DAVIS "Blue Moods"
19. HEITOR DOS PRAZERES E SUA GENTE "Macumba"
20. DIZZY GILLESPIE & STAN GETZ "Diz and Getz"

SONGS:

1. ELVIS PRESLEY, SCOTTY and BILL "Mystery Train" (#68 in my all-time list)
At 1'46" Elvis jumps right in and begins to sing the melody a little too early. Any other producer could have insisted in recording another take. But not Sam Philips. The important thing for Phillips (and for Elvis!) was not perfection, it was the spontaneity, the feeling, the uniqueness. They aimed to capture the moment. This attitude made them break the previous molds, mixing previous styles (blues, gospel and hillbilly) and making them sound like never before. Music was not going to be the same anymore.

2. SARAH VAUGHAN "Lullaby of Birdland" (#117)
It's all about that melody line. Allegedly composed by George Shearing within ten minutes to be used for a radio show broadcast from the New York club Birdland, this melody goes jumping up and down the music scale and going from minor to major chords. And Sarah Vaughan was the perfect voice for this tune, with her wonderful range especially powerful in the lower register.

3. JULIE LONDON "Cry Me a River"
4. LOTTE LENYA "Moritat vom Mackie Messer"
5. JOHNNY CASH "Folsom Prison Blues"
6. ELVIS PRESLEY, SCOTTY and BILL "Baby Let's Play House"
7. LITTLE RICHARD "Tutti Frutti"
8. BO DIDDLEY "Bo Diddley"
9. LOTTE LENYA "Seeraüberjenny"
10. FRANK SINATRA "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning"
11. CHET BAKER "Let's Get Lost"
12. PÉREZ PRADO & SHORTY ROGERS "Voodoo Suite"
13. CLIFFORD BROWN & MAX ROACH "Cherokee"
14. MUDDY WATERS "Mannish Boy"
15. CHUCK BERRY "Maybellene"
16. MAHALIA JACKSON "I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song"
17. BORIS VIAN "Le déserteur"
18. LOTTE LENYA "Bilbao Song"

20. THE PLATTERS "Only You (And You Alone)"

Thanks Schüttelbirne for running this poll, especially for the year by year format which allows deep explorations into the belly of the 50's, a richer decade than one might think. As AM charts focus on jazz, there are many great things to find in other genres as well (pop, early rock, blues, country, chanson, world music, etc.)
I'll try to post earlier in the month, because I took some inspiration from fellow AMers lists, and maybe I could do the same for the others.
Vive les 50s ! :music-rockon:
