Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1956

Post by Schüttelbirne »

And on with 1956!

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month we'll move on to 1957.

Deadline for this is the end of the month, August 31.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

ALBUMS:

1. ELVIS PRESLEY "Elvis Presley" (#19 in my all-time list)
The king is gone but it's not forgotten. The first album by Elvis Presley balanced from the leftovers of the mythical sessions for Sun Studios (including an ethereal and otherworldly take on the standard "Blue Moon") to the more urban, contemporary, urgent, arrogant and wild rock & roll sound of the first sessions for RCA in Nashville and New York, with vibrant reworking of Perkins and Penniman songs. Long live the King. The King of rock & roll.

2. FRANK SINATRA "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!"
3. ELLA FITZGERALD "Sings the Cole Porter Songbook"
4. DUKE ELLINGTON "Ellington at Newport"
5. ANTÔNIO CARLOS JOBIM & VINÍCIUS DE MORAES "Orfeu da Conceição"

7. BORIS VIAN "Chansons possibles ou impossibles"
8. MOONDOG "Moondog"

10. TITO PUENTE "Puente in Percussion"
11. JOHNNY BURNETTE AND THE ROCK 'N ROLL TRIO "Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n Roll Trio"
12. BILLIE HOLIDAY "Lady Sings the Blues"

15. GENE VINCENT AND HIS BLUE CAPS "Bluejean Bop!"
16. ELVIS PRESLEY "Elvis"
17. ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Ella and Louis"
18. THE CHARLIE MINGUS JAZZ WORKSHOP "Pithecanthropus erectus"
19. EL NIÑO DE RONDA "The Real Flamenco"
20. CHET ATKINS "Finger-Style Guitar"

SONGS:

1. CARL PERKINS "Blue Suede Shoes" (#125 in my all-time list)
Rockabilly! The sounds made by Southern blue-collar white-boys blending Country and Rhythm & Blues, with "Blue Suede Shoes" as one of the genre foundational songs. Following a suggestion of Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins wrote "a sly comment on the vanity of a young man out for a night of dancing in his best shoes" (paddlesteamer on RYM). Recorded at the mythical Sun Studio with Sam Phillips capturing the freshness and spontaneity of the take, the song was a smash hit, competing in the charts with Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel." Everybody knows who won in the end but Perkins created one of the most influential records ever.

2. FRANK SINATRA "I've Got You Under My Skin"
Legend says that when the musicians played for the first time the arrangement that Nelson Riddle did for the immortal Cole Porter tune, they stood up and applauded. Understandable, it was probably the best arrangement for a big band ever (well, along with "Take the 'A' Train", "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Moonlight Serenade"). Frank, count me as a swinging lover too!

3. RAY CHARLES AND HIS BAND "Drown in My Own Tears"
4. LITTLE RICHARD & HIS BAND "Ready Teddy"
5. GENE VINCENT & HIS BLUE CAPS "Be-Bop-a-Lula"
6. JOHNNY CASH AND TENNESSEE TWO "I Walk the Line"
7. ELVIS PRESLEY "Blue Moon"
8. DUKE ELLINGTON "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue"
