Prince – Money Don’t Matter 2 Night: 7
A relatively normal Prince song, but still quite catchy.

Drum & Bass is not a genre we find here often and I wouldn’t suspect Bonnielaurel to be the one to change that, but here we are.

251. Ella Eyre - Together
Year: 2015
Album: Feline
Biggest Fan: bonnielaurel (#835)

I blame both Wikipedia and Rate Your Music for this description.

Apparently it is "Dancefloor Drum & Bass". I'm not too familiar with the genre as is, but this to me is just standard pop. Rather bad too. I feel that each time when Eyre starts to belt out the chorus it is supposed to be uplifting or even cathartic, but I don't think her voice fits this type of singing. It comes off as forced.

I know this band for Kill for Love, like most people I assume. That was an interesting take on dream pop sounds. This song has none of that appeal and are mostly some big beats going nowhere.

John Mayer is another one of those acts that is not popular with critics, but extremely popular with general audiences and with Neil. Where do you fall on the Mayer debate?

John Mayer – Queen of California: 6
I find John Mayer to be one of the dullest musicians alive, not in the least because he seems incapable to sing in any way other than that rather boring laidback good guy mode he has going. I expected to dislike this song more, but it does have some J.J. Cale-like vibes that are well done and suit the extremely narrow range of Mayer's vocals.

Today a song by a supergroup consisting of members of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone. They only performed live occasionally, but I’m pretty sure they never had gig in Phoenix; sorry Live in Phoenix.

I never linked grunge with songs this long, but it does somewhat work. Some of the punch is missing, but it is an engaging track.

Last week some accused me of failing to deliver a drum ‘n bass with Ella Eyre’s Together. Today’s song is supposedly drill ‘n bass, but if you don’t feel it is, ask Cadavaca what it is instead.

µ-Ziq – The Fear: 7
I really don't know what drill 'n bass actually is and whether this is representative of the genre, but I do know that I like this song, which plays as a not-quite-dance piece that has a strange not-quite-psychedelic piece. It doesn't evoke fear to me, really, but there is something wrong with the brain. Interesting.

@Rob: No, The Fear is not representative of Drill 'n Bass I'm afraid. Although µ-Ziq did release Drill 'n Bass music, this is way too tranquil. I'm definitely no expert of the genre, but when I think about Drill 'n Bass the first thing that springs to mind is Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin. Yes, the one with the memorable music video.

And I agree with Gillingham: The Fear is definitely not drill & bass, although some other songs on the album would be (particularly Burst Your Arm). I'd simply call this song IDM.

Elder abandons his Brazilian roots for a song by an all-American country artist, based on an all-American traditional, recorded* for an all-American film about all-American cowboys.

257. Willie Nelson – He Was a Friend of Mine
Year: 2005*
Album: Brokeback Mountain: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack*
Biggest Fan: Elder (#804)

*Note: I’m not 100% sure if this song was recorded specifically for Brokeback Mountain, but if it existed previously I can’t find it.
