Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1958

Post by Schüttelbirne »

This month we'll take on 1958!

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month will be the last monthly poll of this project, with 1959.

Deadline for this is the end of the month, October 31.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

Does Nina Simone's album Little Girl Blue count as 1958? AM lists it as 1958, but RYM as 1959.

ALBUMS:

1. BILLIE HOLIDAY "Lady in Satin" (#126 in my all-time list)
The sound of desolation. Billie Holiday tried to dress in satin for one of her last recordings, wrapping herself in a lush orchestral backing courtesy of Ray Ellis' orchestra. But it was in vain. Not even a thousand violins could have sweetened her bitter moan, not even a thousand layers of paint could have disguised the cracks in her voice, the scars of a whole life. The end of a love affair.

2. NINA SIMONE "Little Girl Blue / Jazz as Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club" (#157)
This is Nina Simone's debut but "while this was her first recording, the record's grooves evidence an artist who arrives fully formed" (Thom Jurek for AMG). Recorded with a spare format of jazz trio, the album showcases the versatility of Nina, her blues/gospel/jazz roots but also her classical training (there's a piano solo "where "Bach meets Horace Silver" according to Jurek).

3. BO DIDDLEY "Bo Diddley"
4. TITO PUENTE AND HIS ORCHESTRA "Dance Mania"
5. ELIZETE CARDOSO "Canção do amor demais"
6. BERNARD HERRMANN "Vertigo"
7. JERRY LEE LEWIS "Jerry Lee Lewis"
8. BUDDY HOLLY "Buddy Holly"
9. ELVIS PRESLEY "King Creole"
10. JOHN COLTRANE "Blue Train"
11. MILES DAVIS "Milestones"
12. MANOLO CARACOL "Una historia del cante flamenco"
13. RAVI SHANKAR "India's Master Musician"
14. ELIZABETH COTTEN "Folksongs and Instrumentals With Guitar"
15. DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA featuring MAHALIA JACKSON "Black, Brown and Beige"
16. CANNONBALL ADDERLEY "Somethin' Else"
17. MILES DAVIS "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud"
18. FRANK SINATRA "Sings for Only the Lonely"
19. JAMES BROWN AND HIS FAMOUS FLAMES "Please Please Please"
20. JIMMY REED "I'm Jimmy Reed"

SONGS:

1. CHUCK BERRY "Johnny B. Goode" (#203 in my all-time list)
Chuck Berry hit the target accurately and wrote an everlasting rock & roll anthem from an almost autobiographical "rags-to-riches" story but with one big difference. Berry "could play the guitar just like a ringin' a bell" also, but while Johnny B. Goode "never ever learned to read or write so well" Chuck Berry was one of the best writers of rock 'n' roll lyrics ever. Period.

2. ELVIS PRESLEY "Trouble" (#205)
Maury Dean included "Trouble" as one of the earliest proto-punk songs (along with Gene Vincent's "Race with the Devil" or Link Wray's "Rumble"). Written by Leiber and Stoller, it features stop-time riffs during the verses and the doubling of the tempo plus New Orleans horns on the second half. But mainly it includes a menacing, confrontational and, yeah, punk vocal take by Elvis.

3. NINA SIMONE "My Baby Just Cares for Me"
The great success of this song in the mid-80s, almost 30 years after it came out, can be explained (apart of the deliciously funny music video) because great music is always timeless, because styles are less important that substance. Nina Simone always jumped easily between styles, between jazz, blues, soul, gospel, pop and classical. And boarding all of them with... style.

4. BILLIE HOLIDAY "I’m a Fool to Want You"
5. CHUCK BERRY "Sweet Little Sixteen"
6. EDDIE COCHRAN "Summertime Blues"
7. THE EVERLY BROTHERS "All I Have to Do Is Dream"
8. BERNARD HERRMANN "Vertigo: Prelude and Rooftop"
9. JOHN COLTRANE "Blue Train"
10. ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS "Blues March"
11. TITO PUENTE AND HIS ORCHESTRA "El Cayuco"
12. ELIZETE CARDOSO "Chega de saudade"
13. HENRI SALVADOR "Dans mon île"
14. BILLIE HOLIDAY "You've Changed"
15. FRANK SINATRA "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)"
16. JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES "Try Me (I Need You)"
17. LINK WRAY & HIS RAY MEN "Rumble"
18. DUANE EDDY & HIS 'TWANGY' GUITAR "Rebel Rouser"
19. EDDIE COCHRAN "C'mon Everybody"
20. RITCHIE VALENS "La Bamba"
21. LITTLE ANTHONY AND THE IMPERIALS "Tears on My Pillow"
22. PEGGY LEE "Fever"
23. ELVIS PRESLEY "Crawfish"
24. JERRY LEE LEWIS "High School Confidential"
25. BUDDY HOLLY "Rave On"
26. THE PLATTERS "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
27. CANNONBALL ADDERLEY "Autumn Leaves"

I'm confused re: Nina Simone LITTLE GIRL BLUE.

Both RYM:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... girl-blue/

And Discogs;
https://www.discogs.com/master/122310-N ... -Girl-Blue

Have this album as 1959. Shouldn't we hold it until next month?
