To Pimp a Butterfly falls from 4th place outside the top 100 between the 20-29 and 30-39 age groups!!

Also, OK Computer falls outside the top 100, from 13th place, between 40-49 and 50-59. This surprised me.

Same fall for Loveless, but between the 30-39 and 40-49 groups, although this album is 6 years older than OKC.

It’s really interesting to compare the age trends for OK Computer and In Rainbows.

Wish You Were Here was really close to make the top 10 for all age categories.

One album on here I never really got the hype about was Madvillainy. It was alright, but shocked my age group had it at #4 of all time!

I never would have guessed that King Crimson was still hip among the kids.

The average RYM user is some nerdy white dude, OF COURSE the community loves prog rock.

(No hating, I say this as a nerdy white dude myself).

Disappointed in my age group for not having The Doors in the Top 100!

Why in God's name, or maybe Yeezus's name, would teenagers be listening to In the Court of the Crimson King. (Except I listened to it when I was 17. This thread is giving me all sorts of terrible ideas, like thinking of when I approx. first listened to each album in the AM top 100, what my list of favorite albums would have looked like in my teens, 20s, 30s, etc.)

What's up with how good King Crimson does on this site? A great album but don't see it top 10 much.

It's refreshing to see Kendrick Lamar do better than Kanye West for all age groups.

I don’t have time, but it would be interesting to compare the age groups for a specific decade or year. Would there still be a lot of differences?

The work with these lists has made me realise how young the RYM voters are!

Number of votes:

To Pimp a Butterfly
-19 | 4,679
20-29 | 16,856
30-39 | 2,948
40- | 997

Even for an album like Sgt Pepper...
-19 | 2,811
20-29 | 12,079
30-39 | 4,664
40 | 2,928

Really!!!??? I think RYM only includes voters that have visited RYM during the last year (or something like that). Otherwise the numbers of voters from the 40 and above group seem very low.

10. Minecraft: Volume Alpha :)
I'm honestly so glad to see Volume Alpha up there. It really is a fantastic album and one of the best ambient albums out there.

I started listening to King Crimson soon after I got into music in my late teens. Looking back at the all-time list I submitted in AMF's 2011 all-time albums poll when I was 19, both Red and In the Court of the Crimson King were in my top 25 (they haven't moved much since then). The cross generational appeal of them on RYM stood out to me as well looking at Henrik's initial post, but it doesn't surprise me. In the Court probably stands out to younger listeners because it is a late-60s classic that doesn't sound like anything like the music commonly associated with the era, it contains a high degree of technical musicianship, and it has an attention-grabbing and iconic cover. Also, the band's lack of popular success may help it too - it's definitely not your parent's music. Kanye prominently sampling 21st Century Schizoid Man in his song Power may have also helped the band's cool factor.

Yeah, that's the one that baffled me as well. I'm guessing it gets some cred from the Kanye sample.

I'm 50. The ones I would be most likely to find common ground outside my age niche on and the ones I tend to break ranks with my peers and elders on:

I don’t know why RYM didn’t add charts by gender as well. I would love to explore the list from female voters.

Is there any information on where RYM users live? Because the highest rated album for user in both the UK and the United States is To Pimp a Butterfly, which is at 11 on the overall chart. Unless I did something wrong when I made those charts, it seems strange that two places where I imagine a bulk of the site's users are from wouldn't have more sway.

One thing that nobody’s brought up yet is that a not insignificant number of RYM users give themselves absurdly high ages, like well over 100. I have no idea why this is a trend, but I assume most of these users are on the younger end.
