Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Director Samuel Bayer: "The first second [Kurt] came on set, he hated everything I did. The cheerleaders… I didn’t know anything about that type of music. I was like a Guns N’ Roses guy, like, rock and roll … Like I hired strippers and brought them down, and Kurt thought they were too pretty. So the video was a debacle in a lot of ways, but that debacle--you know I’m sure in your guys’ lives you’ve experienced things that are chaotic and wild, and something really beautiful comes out of it, and that’s what the--the video came out of chaos."
"The band was egging [the extras] on because they didn't like making the video either … I was exhausted at the end of the day. I'm like, 'OK, you guys want to destroy the set? Go, destroy the set!' And the kids come down off the bleachers, and it's under my lighting, and I'm like, 'Oh my God, this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!' I was like, 'God is on my side.'" The camera is there with a full mag of film, and I looked through the eyepiece and I flipped it on."
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Kate Bush: The video we made for "Wuthering Heights" was probably amongst the first ever made, certainly here in this country in terms of a video, and I was very influenced at that time still by Lindsay Kemp. So it was very much the dance influence that I was expressing. So it was really working out choreography that just looked interesting, that would kind of create a persona of Cathy.
Keith "Keef" MacMillan: I think that particular tape illustrated that song very well and people, I think, became aware that you could make the visuals flow with the music and illustrate the song in a more pictorial way then had been done before. Before it had been fairly straightforward ... [W]e set it up on a Monday morning, we shot it in the afternoon, we edited all night, and it was ready for Top of the Pops the next morning. Well, if you'd done that on film, I think it would've taken about six months of opticals in the lab to get to that stage. On video tape we can act very fast.
