My #12 album. Some may not like the more "American" sound, but I find the songs calming and refreshing

The Top Two are two of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. The rest are good, but somewhat close.

With or Without You
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Where the Streets have no Name
Bullet the Blue Sky
One Tree Hill
Red Hill Mining Town
Mothers of the Disappeared
Running to Stand Still
In God's Country
Exit
Trip Through Your Wires
" Ah, yes! Our meager restitution"

A (quite) good album but poorly sequenced. It is structured giving the feeling of a continuous decline throughout the album, the difference on quality, intensity and appeal between the first three songs and the last three is huge.

One of their great ones, that I've owned before I ever saw a music list in my life. As I've evaluated it, though, an odd album: Their only U.S. Number One hits seem ordinary to me, whereas the rest of the songs have a grand, almost cinematic quality (yet with them being very close in quality, they don't "rank" easily for this sort of exercise).

1. Running to Stand Still

Probably my favorite U2 song. Lyrics hit home in several different ways and it's one of the most overlooked gems of any artist that I can think of.

2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

Another set of lyrics that speak to me. Bono gets criticized sometimes for being too grandiose and/or earnest, but this hits all the right buttons, being simultaneously uplifting and sad.

3. Where the Streets Have No Name

All about that intro. The Edge's style has been stolen so many times that it's hard to imagine how different this must have sounded compared to any other mainstream rock bands at the time.

4. Bullet the Blue Sky

U2 try to sound badass and somehow pull it off.

5. With or Without You

Hard to know what to say about this song at this point. The ending section is incredible. I also find it interesting that all the big hits from this album came first in the running order, something that later occurred on All That You Can't Leave Behind. Don't know if they knew that it was going to play out that way when they decided on the sequence, or if they did it deliberately to lure the listener in. Either way, the second half of this album is strong enough to justify listening all the way through.

6. One Tree Hill
7. Red Hill Mining Town
8. In God's Country
9. Mothers of the Disappeared
10. Trip Through Your Wires
11. Exit

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is my favorite song of the '80s by a pretty wide margin. Surprised I'm the only one ranking it first on this album, although the top 3 are all in my top 8 songs of the '80s, so those aren't bad choices either.

Interesting that the running order is the result of the band asking Kirsty MacColl to rank the tracks. I preferred listening to Boy earlier this week, WOWY aside, though:

03| With or Without You
05| Running to Stand Still
07| In God's Country
01| Where the Streets Have No Name
06| Red Hill Mining Town
10| Exit
04| Bullet the Blue Sky
09| One Tree Hill
11| Mothers of the Disappeared
02| I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
08| Trip through Your Wires

I never really cared too much about U2, at least until they published Achtung Baby!

Regarding The Joshua Tree, I recognise it’s a good album, but it’s not my cup of tea. Furthermore, it’s one of the most unbalanced albums I have ever listen to in my life. For me first 4 songs in the album are very good, but the rest is forgivable. It could have made a wonderful EP.

1- 01 | Where the Streets Have No Name
2- 03 | With or Without You
3- 04 | Bullet the Blue Sky
4- 02 | I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
5- 09 | One Tree Hill
6- 07 | In God's Country
7- 10 | Exit
8- 08 | Trip Through Your Wires
9- 06 | Red Hill Mining Town
10- 05 | Running to Stand Still
11- 11 | Mothers of the Disappeared
