Seeing Japandroids on this otherwise pretty monochrome list made me chuckle.

Can someone care to give me the appeal behind Red by Taylor Swift? It looks like it's gonna be high on the EOD lists, but i've personally never gotten the hype.

Red truly is the biggest shock, it's coming out of nowhere. I mean the album barely did well on 2012 EOY lists, but it suddenly makes appearance in many EOD lists heck even overshadows 1989. Judging from recent article/retrospective review, Red probably will chart high on Rolling Stone/Spin and other publications.

Red came out right before the poptimism movement took off. I personally like many of the tracks from it ("All Too Well", "Sad Beautiful Tragic") but don't know if it's consistent on the whole. I'd be happier if the love people showing to the album as a whole was instead given to specifically "All Too Well" as a track, or even the singles.

Seems like they tried to toe the line between good and popular, not always successfully.

I prefer 1989 to Red.

Red makes more sense to me than 1989; while 1989 is clearly the more populist pick and had the greater cultural saturation, it's also...a bit obvious and middle-brow? Red was Swift's real first foray into mainstream pop, press releases to the contrary be damned, and the lyrical content on 1989 is pretty watered-down. Red isn't a perfect album, but it does do everything that Swift claimed 1989 did.

I never cared for 1989 to be honest, the production is pretty dull throughout. Only Style (speaking of, where is that song on these lists) and the Antonoff tracks have any real life to them.

As a longtime fan, Red isn't my personal favorite either. And I agree that All Too Well (and Shake It Off) is where I expected most of her recognition.

But with that said, I'm glad she's finally getting some of the critical recognition she deserves. I could be missing a few, but I believe she joins the following artists as artists currently with 2 top 50 albums of the decade:
