Hot take:

Wow! Lido Pimienta got the best new entry! She's breaking all the records singing in Spanish being out of the mainstream (Bad Bunny). Good for her.

I only checked from 1950 on, but if these results hold, Megan Thee Stallion will join only two other acts in being involved with the top two songs of a year on Acclaimed Music. Elvis Presley in 1956, The Beach Boys in 1966, and now Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.

I'm going through the list and listening to every song that I don't know. And then I came to this one. Holy shit. I don't know if I love it or hate it (probably love), but if there's any song that should be listened to going in totally blind, it's this one. Absolutely no way to describe this without ruining it.

My mistake, it fell through the cracks in the rush to get an update out for Christmas. Next update, it'll be there for sure.

While there's been plenty of discussion about WAP and the K-pop tracks, can I just say it's been nearly a decade and I still don't understand HAIM's critical success? Even with songs or albums that don't particularly appeal to me I can see why people who like that style might care. I keep listening to The Steps trying to get it and I'm at a complete loss. Can anyone explain? I'm legitimately curious why this of all bands baffles me.

I'm not the biggest HAIM fan, but at least one of their songs always seems to find a way on my EOY list whenever they put out an album, so I guess I'll tackle this.

I've seen some people compare the band to Wilson Phillips or Sheryl Crow, and while I don't think these comparisons are entirely unwarranted, I do think they fall short of what makes the band's sound so appealing (and both Wilson Phillips and Crow have some quality jams, so it's not as if this comparison is inherently negative, but I digress). To me one of the best parts of "The Steps" is the "raw" sound of the drums and how high they are in the mix. It's a little detail, but it totally changes how I see the song, giving it a less "manufactured" feel and more of a rough and ramshackle feel, something that the big singles from Phillips and Crow lack. There's also the electric guitar tone, which is somewhat reminiscent of the tone George Harrison would use in his playing. And I also love the way Danielle Haim emotes certain words or phrases, especially during the chorus, in particular "understand" and "baby", the way she elongates the syllables on the latter word in particular. And overall it's just a well-crafted piece of pop music, the song is catchy, easy to sing along to, and has a pretty tight structure to it.

But mainly what I think the song, and the band, do well, is that they write these pieces of pop music that could sound quite unremarkable, but then they add an element or two to them that completely changes how I look at the music. What would "The Steps" be without that drum sound? Or the electric guitar tone that practically squeals at certain parts of the song? Or Haim's emoting? Well it would still be a well-crafted piece of pop, but it wouldn't be something that I feel any reason to play again. But HAIM do add those elements, and that's all the difference.

Hard to be too disappointed from this kind of turnout by a song already included on AM imo.
