Well MOJO also has finished its list. Both publications always the earliest compared to others

I don't get this tendency for publications to release EOY lists before the year is over. While EOY lists typically seem to favor entries from the first half of the year anyways, it's always odd seeing albums/songs from late fall/early winter appear in next calendar year's best-of lists (e.g. Blinding Lights from last year, although maybe not a strong example due to the pandemic).

Why can't they just wait another month or two? While some niche communities like this forum enjoy looking at lists, is there really a strong enough demand for lists from a publication's general audience to justify pumping lists out at this time (granted, as some other people have said, this list is early compared to others, but I still find the December timeframe that a majority of lists are released in too early).

Does it have to do with the magazine release cycle?

Yup it most likely to do with release cycle. Both Uncut and Mojo publish their respective lists on January issue, I believe they already have accessed to upcoming December albums, and even put some reviews. But the big problem is the surprise releases like Beyonce's self titled or Taylor's evermore that coming out of nowhere, both albums released in December and already missed the cut off and most likely get ignored for the next year-end list.

This debate comes up every year, no publication is going to do their best of the year list in January whether you like it or not (by then everyone's turned their attention to new albums for the year ahead) and I imagine any music act who surprisingly drops an album in December doesn't particularly care if they feature in lists anyway, otherwise they'd just release the album a month earlier or later

Also that Uncut list features two albums which aren't even out yet so I imagine they have heard what's left to come this year anyway

Hey Edre,
As a big fan of Idles, and I think mileswide is one too, can I strongly (strongly !!!) suggest you listen to Dub Sex ?
I just listened to their compilation "Search For The Right Words" and it's true post punk (not revival), and the influence to Idles is glaring.
Enjoy !

IDLES is more Holden's thing than mine if my memory serves me well, so he might be as into the Dub Sex comp as I am after the first listen- what a fruitful rescue mission from obscurity it is too :music-rockon: I have to donate to charity every time I make a comparison these days but if you're drawing parallels between Dub Sex's singer and Joe Talbot, I can see the links between them!
All I got inside is vacancy!

I will definitely listen to them!

Also, the new Idles album is my favorite of theirs (even though I know I am in the minority) and will likely place highly on my EOY list!
