Yeah. Because it's not just a musician or a YouTuber. He has trajectory working in the music industry. His opinion has some level of relevance.

I wouldn't include him. Simpily because as an individual we would also have to include Needle Drop ratings and lists for EOY stuff since he got his start on College Radio.

I knew someone in some point was going to mention Fantano but there's no comparison. Fantano could be a musician but he wasn't part of the industry as a music producer of professional bands long time before starting a YouTube channel. It's an important difference.

After May 2022, Beato decided to finished with the series. But in March 2023, he decided to start a new season and counting again. The first one is "Mr Brightside"

I need to fight for these ones because Beato fits in the category very famous critic. Their videos are much popular than many podcasts in here.

Henrik, I think here the criteria for choosing not prioritize is because it was not relevant as a musician, right? If it was for this I understand. But I think it's the case when he's most important as a personality talking about music . most important nowadays than lost of critics from writing media. Just check his numbers and his work.

I thought I had not decided this one yet. I really like Rick Beato and would be happy to include a list by him. But I’m also hesistant about these lists as they don’t quite seem to be his definitive albums or songs. Obviously he really likes all of these recordings, but he seems to use different criteria for the series. While there are mostly jazz albums listed plus some classic rock, the songs list is mostly more recent hard rock stuff.

Thanks for your answer.  After your comments I started looking for information about both lists because they are indeed different from each other (and not just because one is about albums and the other about songs).

Regarding the album list, I don't think there is a major problem because they are not only his personal choices, but also because much of that music is quoted by Beato throughout his videos on his channel.  The difference is that in the video that I quote in particular, he puts everything together as a list for a video.  I honestly don't see it different as another list that other critics and musicians have made.  And regarding the fact that it's not a definitive list, it's no different than a Bowie list from the 70s and another made in the 90s. Even critics that I admire like Simon Frith or Christgeau are very cautious in using the term definitive list.  I think that album list is the closest thing to music that he personally considers to be the best and the fact of putting it together in a single video makes it an objective source, at least I see it that way.

About the series "what make this song great?", reviewing different sources, most people consider it as a series of deconstruction and musical analysis of songs dedicated to classic rock and popular music mainly. (Source 1: https://roymusicusa.com/2018/07/26/what ... sic-songs/ Source 2: https://www.openculture.com/2018/04/wha ... great.html)

Now, although most of the songs are from before 2010 (with a greater presence of the 90s, but covering from the 60s to the 2000s), it is true that there are 4 songs from the last 10 years (Ariana Grande, Chainsmokers, Polyphia and Periphery).  Do those exceptions invalidate the series?  Personally I think not because for more than 10 minutes he continues to explain from his deconstruction and analysis why the song is great.

Now, Beato himself explains in the first seconds of the first episode of the series: "I'm gonna be taking tunes from all different eras and genres and talking about what actually makes them great" (https://youtu.be/TU--X0pC12o), and to continue investigating more about it, there is an interview that they do to him about the series and Beato himself acknowledges that many of those songs are not his favorites but he considers that they have elements that make people want to listen to them over and over again (The exact quote is "When I made the title, it has a question mark in it. It’s not necessarily songs that I like are up there, but it’s asking “what makes people listen to these songs over and over”. Beyond even the lyrics and melody, there are things in the arrangements, the rhythms and the sonics of it that I want to examine and talk about all of these elements that went into that choice of sounds. So, it’s about song writing, arranging, performance  and how things work together; I demystify it for people" http://www.jazzweekly.com/2020/06/rick- ... y-so-great).  In conclusion: the songs in the series are not his favorites but they do have an objective criterion of focusing on the fact that they have elements that make it closer to popular music (I think that this is as qualitative a criterion as the dozens of critical lists that we have on Acclaimed Music, more editorial maybe than a preferences list but a valid one)
