Post by Cicice »

TREBLE: The Best Songs Of The 2000s: https://www.treblezine.com/150-best-songs-of-the-2000s/

I'll make this note short, standout from this list for me are: "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country", "Hidden Place", "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "Eple" and "Be Mine!". This is very similar to the Pitchfork list, with #1 and #2 swapping the places.

I do like seeing "Untitled (How Does It Feel?)" at #11 because it is a masterpiece of songwriting and arrangement. More songs from Voodoo should be in these lists actually.

At first glance sure, it's fairly similar to what Pitchfork did 10 years ago (I doubt today's Pitchfork list would be as similar) ; I don't think I have seen Cashout, Another Morning Stoner or any the Books song outside of Pitchfork, and the Sade pick looks fairly "new Pitchforky".
That being said, Pitchfork top 200 song didn't have a single world music pick, they'd never have put an ambient song in the top 10 (or 2 in the top 20 depending how you sort Grouper), there was a single metal song if I remember well while there are plenty here and you'd never have seen Coil, Converge or Paramore in their list (that last one possibly having a chance to make it in today's Pitchfork). This is probably closer to what OneThirtyBPM did back then, or what Treble was already doing (though they broadened their picks a bit). Treble are probably my favorite list makers right now and that list delivers !

Doesn't mean I have no gripes with it : Modest Mouse being represented with no The Moon and Antarctica picks, a strange Yo La Tengo pick, an even stranger 2nd Animal Collective Pick, only one Arcade Fire, The Sweat Descends being relegated from the main list to "further listens", I still dislike "Do You Realize" as much as ever... but that's just nitpicking overall it's a pretty great panorama of the decade (and I already made some great discovers, that Jackie O Motherfucker track is great and I had kinda forgotten that Boris song but it is pretty fantastic)

Yes I've looked at the list and yes, even the top 6 on that list has "Paper Planes", "Crazy In Love" and "Maps".

D'Angelo's "How Does It Feel?" does seem to be getting a hefty of inclusions on best 2000s songs or year by year in that decade.

Thank you for doing the lists, I didn't know if I could handle jotting them down and research each of the songs year release. I had a peak at Pitchfork's lists and it seems more hip hop, catchy commercial pop, dance R&B, dance pop, indie pop and indie rock orientated. I agree with the Treble comparisons, some included songs (or at least the bottom half) looks like something Treble would have included in their genre picks based on Shoegaze, Dream Pop and Drone.

I only really seem to see "Float On" often from Modest Mouse and not much of anything else from them. I'm not that great on "Do You Realise?" either, I rather "In The Mornings Of The Magicians" and "Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell" instead but I find myself prefer "Do You Realise" over "Race For The Prize" if it comes to their most acclaimed. Although I don't speak for many music lovers but I have no problem with the lack of Arcade Fire and Paramore (I tried really hard to get into them, so far - could not stand Paramore), but I agree we'll be seeing them on many future list. Arcade Fire had many peaks of acclaims, I think cause of Olivia Rodrigo and Hayley Williams' solos, critics are going to give Paramore a retroperspective ranking.
