This is a great list! They covered most of the essentials from the last 20 years that you would think of like "Chop Suey" and "Lateralus" but there are some normally underappreciated songs that made it too like "Disciple" or "Square Hammer." The most inspired choice has got to be "Through the Fire and Flames," which I have to imagine with it's meme status was probably one of the most successful metal songs in decades. The Poppy song is also a good choice, if there's any band/song that is a harbinger of what metal might look like over the next decade it's probably that.

I'm less thrilled by "Down With the Sickness" which has been memed for all the wrong reasons...and deservedly so, I don't dislike nu-metal but this was the most annoying example of it. Also I might be in the minority but I always found Cannibal Corpse's lyrics to be pretty infantile and kind of repulsive in a way that isn't entertaining in the way a lot of these other songs are, so I could live without their inclusion on the list.

The songs I'm most happy to see:

Iron Maiden, "The Wicker Man"
Converge, "Concubine"
Opeth, "Blackwater Park"
Slayer, "Disciple"
System of a Down, "Chop Suey!"
Tool, "Lateralus"
Lacuna Coil, "Heaven's a Lie"
Mastodon, "Blood and Thunder"
Slipknot, "Duality"
DragonForce, "Through the Fire and Flames"
Gojira, "Flying Whales"
Between the Buried and Me, "White Walls"
The Black Dahlia Murder, "What a Terrible Night to Have a Curse"
High on Fire, "Rumors of War" :music-guitarred:
The Dillinger Escape Plan, "Milk Lizard"
Bring Me the Horizon, “Shadow Moses”
Behemoth, “O Father O Satan O Sun”
Ghost, "Square Hammer"
Body Count, "No Lives Matter" (Not Ice-T's best lyrics of all time but this song is super underappreciated)
Code Orange, "Forever"
Power Trip, “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)”
Poppy, “Concrete”

It seems like they were only doing one song per artist so I won't fault them for not including some of their other tracks but there were some artists that were conspicuously missing in my opinion:

Deafheaven - I can see the argument that they wouldn't count Sunbather as metal (they're wrong) but where's anything from Bermuda? I feel like leaving out the most influential metal band of the past decade is a little odd.

Queens of the Stone Age - Just realized as I'm writing this that they didn't have any QOTSA?? Rated R was still pretty grungy but some of the stuff from Songs for the Deaf like "You Think I Ain't Worth a Doller..." and "Song for the Dead" are 100% metal songs and are some of the best of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Deftones - Very shocked not to see anything from Deftones' numerous classic albums from this century, "Change (In the House of Flies)," "Romantic Dreams," or even "Genesis" from last year would've made great inclusions.

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone is one of the most essential metal albums of this century so far, there's some really great stuff they could've taken from that.

Sleep - Speaking of dope, Dopesmoker is even more essential (and popular), and the choice would've been easy since they just pick the one song! I'm sure they didn't forget about it since they included High on Fire but I would understand if they might have counted it as 90's material. With that said their 2018 album was pretty great too.

Linkin Park - I'm only a casual fan of Hybrid Theory and Meteora but I'm a little surprised none of the early hits off those albums made the list since they ended up so influential on the music industry in general.

Lightning Bolt - This might be just off the precipice of metal for a lot of their stuff but..."The Metal East" is awesome and kind of speaks for itself.

Death From Above 1979 - I kind of expected these guys to make the list since You're a Woman, I'm a Machine was so buzzworthy back in the day.

Baroness - Baroness were kind of leading the charge for metal this last decade and seemingly everything they've done since their inception has been acclaimed so their absence on the list seems strange as well.

Sunn O))) - Again hugely influential over the last decade and change, strange not to see them either. Though the list-makers may have been trying to avoid instrumental metal in general.

Nails - Kind of an underground favorite like Power Trip so I feel like they could've included both.

Earth - Ditto about being an underground favorite, plus their earlier stuff in the early 2000's is especially heavy and I feel it would still qualify.

Pallbearer - They must be the most significant sludge metal band in decades (I don't count Mastodon since their stuff is a lot faster and they made the list already).

Napalm Death - If there's any classic metal band that had a major comeback it's this one, I feel like anything on Apex Predator is one of the best of the century but especially "How the Years Condemn."

Rina Sawayama - Now this one is more that I would've loved to see rather than expected to be on the list, but "XS" and "STFU!" are metal as fuck and honestly I feel like this would be the future of metal if anyone else was brave enough to make pop music this heavy.
