❓ Roedy Black Publishing Inc.: Gold Standard Song List (2020)
I'm not pretty sure about the egilibity of this one, it's a book with educational purposes (composing) but apparently the list was chosen in a acclaimed critic way by a commitee
https://www.goldstandardsonglist.com/index.html
"The Gold Standard Song List (GSSL) is an indexed database of information on 5,000 of the greatest songs in popular music, composed over a 100-year period, in 14 genres ranging from ragtime to rap."
"In 2001, Roedy Black Publishing Inc. commissioned the H.U.M.S. Committee to draw up list of outstanding songs of the English-speaking world in all major genres.
Although the original list (about 1,000 songs) was never published or named, it served as a resource of examples that were cited throughout How Music REALLY Works, 1st Edition, which was published online at Roedy Black Publishing’s GoldStandardSongList.com. website.
In 2002, Roedy Black Publishing asked the H.U.M.S. Committee to expand the list to 5,000 songs. It would serve as a major resource for readers of How Music REALLY Works, 2nd Edition.
This time, the list would have a formal identity: the Gold Standard Song List, or GSSL."

The list
https://www.goldstandardsonglist.com/Pa ... ort_2a.htm
The H.U.M.S. Committee was given a set of guidelines—that is, biases and limitations—for song selection, to ensure the quality and practical value of the list, and to keep it from expanding to an impractical length.
For the most part, the H.U.M.S. Committee followed the selection criteria. However, in the spirit of independent-mindedness, they made some exceptions, which the publisher accepted

I'm guessing the 25 Children's Songs won't fit the criteria, especially because too many entries aren't associated with a specific artist? No such list would be complete without Orgasm Addict and Right Said Fred anyway https://www.goldstandardsonglist.com/Pa ... Songs.html

The funny songs list has no Weird Al but it does have Star Trekkin’ and Mr. Custer…OK…

I didn't even notice that! Neither did the book's editor judging by the lack of him in the Parental Warning

Re: Gold Standard Song List
That being said, I appreciate the variety here, and also that they specify which particular recordings they're singling out for praise. There's stuff from all eras and genres. Did Steve Sullivan have a hand in this? This feels like something he'd do.

Like, I'm looking at the hip-hop section and there are some deeeeeep cuts. Clearly someone here knew their shit because it's way more than just "Rappers' Delight," "The Message," etc.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
Bringing this back just to say I've been going in on this recently and it is an EXCELLENT source. I really hope we can include it.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
I totally agree with you StevieFan13. Superb selection of songs. The reggae section is top notch as well as the DANCE/ELECTRONICA one. HIP HOP section quite original as well. It should be definitely included in the same spirit as the 1001 SONGS book or the 7500 songs. I also like the way they include the song with all the different recording artists. Excellent find.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
It’s nice, but for AM I think it’s a problem that they don’t define a definitive recording for each song.
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: Gold Standard Song List
There is. It's on the songwriter section (bad design by the way). They wrote the composer(s) and next to appears the word REC with the performer chose on each song.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
I think that’s mostly the case for “standards” and maybe a couple of songs with one or two notable covers. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” I believe doesn’t cite Tori Amos’ version but does cite Pat Boone’s.
I dunno. It’s all up to you, but I’d personally be bummed if it wasn’t included. I think it’s very diverse and can help make some good changes to the rankings. I don’t think there’s a ton about it that would rule it out but I’m not the one to make that call of course

Re: Gold Standard Song List
Yeah, it's truth they don't choose all the versions but they choose a lot of them. Maybe following the year and the genre mentioned it could be chosen only the first recording artist.
For example:
1973
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Folk/Roots
Dylan, Bob; REC: Bob Dylan; Eric Clapton; Guns 'N' Roses; Avril Lavigne; Dolly Parton; Roger Waters
It's obvious by the year and genre it's talking mainly about the Bob Dylan version.
But, I don't know, it's a tough one. Although I don't see wrong included all the versions mentioned. But it's just my opinion.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
Of course, there's also the chance you then have to make a judgment call on which version is "more" iconic. Like (and I haven't double-checked this but I'd be surprised if these weren't in there somewhere), on the subject of Bob Dylan, if "Mr. Tambourine Man" or "All Along the Watchtower" were mentioned, you'd probably have to (respectively) count it towards the Byrds and Jimi Hendrix besides just Dylan.
I realize this isn't helping my own case but this is one of the lists I'm a little passionate about. Which is a scary thing to have for a list but something I haven't felt since the NPR "Women+ in Music" list. It's the first time in a while I could see myself being actively disappointed by a list's exclusion when I feel like it's not impossible to justify adding it to the database. But, as I've said before and will say again, Henrik - like RuPaul - always has the final say. I've pled my case, and if that doesn't do the job, I'll gladly let it go and move on to the next thing.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
Well, I think the rule should be to include only the first recording artist mentioned. And that's it ! No exceptions ! Full stop ! A very few tunes like Mr. TAMBOURINE MAN will suffer from this rule. They probably had to do some hard choices sometimes. Especially in the jazz section. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is credited to The Beatles as well as......Laibach. I mean it'always interesting to know that Laibach did a cover but the artist mentioned first is The Fab Four. ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER is attributed to Bob Dylan first and Hendrix after. Thus, people would think that the writer of the song is given more credit but the counter example is indeed RESPECT. The Queen of Soul is mentioned first and Otis Redding in second position. That proves that the staff had to chose their "definitive" recording version before including other notable recording artists. In the JAZZ section it is even more striking. Who would think that TAKE THE A TRAIN belongs to someone else than The Duke ? The other six (!) artists are probably worth to listen (especially Chaka Khan's) but that would be too much work to include all versions anyway. I was glad to learn that EMBRACEABLE YOU was credited to Billie Holiday for instance. I hope I made a point.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
Good example Henrik.
https://musicbrainz.org/work/907b9071-6 ... 31da9c71fb
I found all these covers. The song is mentionned in the Funny list of songs. So apparently they found that Velva Blu's cover is the funniest. Well, when you look at the video clip you understand why.
https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&s ... velva+blue
I mean it's like , if they had included Weird Al Yankovic version of BAD instead of the King Of Pop's one.
OK, Just another example.
PLASTIC JESUS. ....a traditional folk tune famously sung by Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_Jesus_(song)
If you listen to that version, there is nothing funny about it.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dG9tuuznL1Y
Paul Newman is even crying when he's singing.
But the recording chosen is sung by The Flaming Lips because it is sarcastic and full of second degree humor.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WugBXw94mSM
Funnier than Dead Kennedy's version... (Well Mojo Nixon & Jello Biaffra's to be exact)....
So, to sum up, I reckon Velva Blu's version has been included in the Funny Songs section because it is a parody of Aqua's BARBIE GIRL.
By the way Henrik, I hope you're spending a nice holiday with your family. You changed my life with AM. And I will never thank you enough for that.

Re: Gold Standard Song List
The "Barbie girl" one is a really odd selection but their criteria was the funniest (at least according to them). Even it's an exception if you compare with another songs of the list of 117.

I recommend to check the songs lists by genre. That's when you realize the vast selection of popular music they've gone to the trouble of making.

Hi Henrik, you stated a few years ago that no list without any MASSIVE ATTACK would have no chance to get eligible for AM. And another forumite answered you to apply this rule for TEENAGE FANCLUB as well. Hmmmm, I checked and both UNFINISHED SYMPATHY and EVERYTHING FLOWS are included. So......no excuse...
Re: Gold Standard Song List
Roedy Black Publishing Inc. (Canada) commissioned the H.U.M.S. Committee (Sweden) who made the final selection.

interesting source , in favor of inclusion

Yeah, I checked it again and totally in favor of the inclusion, even with the all versions songs.
