I am surprised at the absences of Beach House, Perfume Genius, Sharon Van Etten and Father John Misty in a top 50; I guess the Pitchfork, NME and Guardian lists will be decisive. By the way, the disdain there is towards the projects of rappers like Nas, JID and the members of the Griselda collective bother me.

Like last year, I'll highlight the 5 albums that are on the brink of making or not making the AM top 3000, once it is updated. I base this on nothing more than the list length of the most recent years, so don't take it too seriously. That said, these seem to be in peril:

36 | Julia Jacklin | Pre Pleasure
37 | The Weeknd | Dawn FM
38 | Taylor Swift | Midnights
39 | Harry Styles | Harry's House
40 | Vince Staples | Ramona Park Broke My Heart

Frankly, I suspect that The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles will rise, as big fame just make them more likely to be noted.

I also remember vaguely that last year we had an early underperformance by all these British post-rock bands, but that they rose eventually. That might happen to Black Country, New Road too.

I think Kendrick Lamar is probably the greatest artist of the past 10 years, but if Mr. Morale ends up at #1 that's going to be really disappointing. A good album, but easily his weakest (outside of Untitled Unmastered).

I'm disappointed that Hellfire isn't even in the top 50.

I was surprised at first too since Arcade Fire are (or were) "critics' favorites" but then I remembered the whole Win Butler situation. Pretty sad to see tbh

Interesting, that album was always at #2 on the 2022 MCCH that user Otisredding does.

How Kendrick got away with being transphobic, I'll never know.

Oh wait, I do. Have you seen how loud the world is cheering for the world cup in Qatar at the moment?

The intent certainly isn't transphobic, but the use of deadnames and slurs muddy the waters quite considerably.

Auntie Diaries, like many other Kendrick songs, clearly has Kendrick putting on a character, this time his past self. It's a rather visceral take, but I think it's misguided to reduce it to transphobic. Maybe messier and harder to crack than he intended, but I think the only thing he gets outright wrong is deadnaming Caitlyn Jenner.

Like, when something like The Silence of the Lambs still gets heaps of praise despite being maliciously transphobic, I think there are better targets than a song that is clearly trying to find a deeper understanding of the issue.

I think it's easily his weakest including Untitled Unmastered, which is excellent albeit experimental.
Good record, definitely not #1 this year.

I would recommend reading the Genius annotations on the song:
https://genius.com/Kendrick-lamar-auntie-diaries-lyrics
A lot to discuss, but I think calling the guy or the song transphobic is totally wrong.
Anyway, I'd say at least read some explanations before stating stuff like that.

I think the majority of people are totally sick and tired of all this trans talk, tbh. And as for the World Cup, people like football. They're going to watch it regardless.

I'm more surprised and intrigued that he gets away with making alright records that are a bit below par for him and still taking the #1 spot on end of year lists.

These have their heads on the chopping block on the moment as regarding making the official AM top 3000 or not:

36 | Cate Le Bon | Pompeii
37 | Steve Lacy | Gemini Rights
38 | Beth Orton | Weather Alive
39 | Yeah Yeah Yeahs | Cool It Down
40 | Aldous Harding | Warm Chris

Remember how last time I guessed that Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd - who were then all in this range - would probably rise, basically on fame alone? Boy, was I right!

Cool It Down is the type of comeback album I thought would do better. Then again, despite not having heard all that much albums of 2022 yet, it seemed like an enormously stacked year. Like there are more albums that I'd expect to be higher than usual.
I'm also surprised to see Lamar at the top. Just scrolling through the lists gave me the impression that Beyoncé was really dominating this.

At least it says Kendrick's definitely earned this (not like he has to prove anything, but you know).

I wonder where SZA (or indeed Little Simz) will end up in the 2023 list with her album missing most lists this year

Hello! I was looking through the table and found a small error. There is an entry for Hiraku Utada (correct is Hikaru Utada:) ) with one mention by Gorilla vs Bear. Apparently someone in their staff got her name wrongly

Both the AOTY and Metacritic aggregates focus almost exclusively on UK and US publications and websites. The inclusion of critics lists from other parts of the world makes the Acclaimed Music EOY poll the most genuinely world-wide aggregate.

Kendrick appears 4 and 5 on Metacritic and AOTY. There's nothing strange in there. The range is normal. And actually Motomami is 2.

The albums that are currently hanging on for dear life for placement on AM:

36 | Billy Woods | Aethiopes
37 | Suede | Autofiction
38 | Black Midi | Hellfire
39 | Denzel Curry | Melt My Eyez See Your Future
40 | Steve Lacy | Gemini Rights

Only Steve Lacy was here the last time (with a slight drop in placement), but only Cate Le Bon of that group has made it to relative safety (she's a #35).

So a last look at the 5 albums that hang in the balance:

36 | Chat Pile | God's Country
37 | Cate Le Bon | Pompeii
38 | Yeah Yeah Yeahs | Cool It Down
39 | Steve Lacy | Gemini Rights
40 | Shygirl | Nymph

Black midi lost the race, suprisingly.

Other notable losers here are King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard who managed to not get a single album in the top 200. Certainly this a result of vote splitting, as they released so many albums, but I wished the extremely high quality of them was recognized here.

No Music Finland either. At this point I don’t get why I try finding new EOY sources when they probably aren’t eligible anyway for reasons I’m not sure of. Not anyone’s fault, just annoyed at myself for wasting my time lol

Revista La Dosis WAS included this year, I just missed it when recounting sources. Panam, I really don’t mean to be rude but in the future instead of passive aggression just say “I think you missed this source.” I’m trying my best and comments like that really make me not want to continue doing this.

StevieFan, I’m sorry you feel this way!! Music Finland wasn’t included because they don’t do reviews as far as I can tell, if I’m wrong please correct me, or if they are a printed magazine and I missed it let me know. I checked like 100+ sources in the last few days, I might have missed something . Additionally, I actually included at least ten new sources that were not on last years spreadsheet, definitely more than last year. I hope you don’t stop trying to find sources, and again, sorry you feel that way.

No worries Holden! I’m not sure if they do reviews either so if that’s the issue that’s the issue. Thank you for all your hard work on putting this together! It doesn’t go unappreciated!
