It is quite self important to not drop at once

It's a daily newspaper in a time of low circulation, not a monthly magazine like many others. I'm more, oh here we go complaining again.

I mean it gives proper recognition and a big write up to each of the top 10 which in a day of low music sales can't be a bad thing for artists.

And particularly, from personal experience, can we stop complaining if the person updating the list doesn't do it in a timeframe that you want.

Predictions anyone?

Last year someone guessed Self Esteem's "Prioritise Pleasure" and it turned out to be correct. 😆

I would put a decent bet that Wet Leg will be no. 1

I think the rest of the top 15 will be Kendrick, Jockstrap, The Weeknd, Sudan Archives, Fontaines D.C., Rosalia, Shygirl, Black Country New Road, Arctic Monkeys, Nilufer Yanya, Ethel Cain, Loyle Carner, Yard Act and Big Thief

We'll have to wait and see!

I would have thought Beyonce was a shoe-in for no. 1, she's Guardian catnip (like Self Esteem was)

I was going to choose Wet Leg as well. But if you're taking Wet Leg, I'm gonna go with Rosalia's "Motomami" as their No.1 pick.

I think you may be right about the rest of the 15, except I got a feeling Beth Orton and Soul Glo would end up in there too. Not sure about Spoon and Weyes Blood. I think I would replace Ethel Cain, Loyle Carner and The Weeknd for Beth Orton, Soul Glo and Beyonce for my predictions.

But as you say, we shall wait and see! :)

IIRC, it was Donchano who correctly predicted the top four [thread]. Almost had the top 4 back in 2020 too [thread].

Will it happen for the third year running?

05. Rosalia - Motomami
04. Charli XCX - Crash

Charli being #4 is unexpected, I guess Beyonce and Kendrick are on lock for Top 3 which one spot left so I can say some of these significant releases will miss the list:

- The Weeknd: Dawn FM
- Angel Olsen: Big Time
- The Smile: A Light for Attracting Attention
- Black Country, New Road: Ants From Up There
- Weyes Blood: And in the Darkness, Hearts A Glow (too late release?)

But I have strong feeling that Sault will be in Top 3 so none of those above albums will make it into the list.

I doubt they'll have Sault in there, I suspect barely any reviewers have had time to wade through all the albums they released recently. They gave Dawn FM five stars so maybe that will be no. 3 or maybe they forgot about it as it was a January release.

Idk but The Guardian kinda stan Sault so I'm not surprise if they put all five albums at #3. The Weeknd is little bit tricky, After Hours was well-received and its presence throughout 2020 kinda ubiquitous yet the album didn't make it into the list.

I don't know how much star ratings matter, as they are from individual critics and the list is a group effort, but it might be of interest to know that neither Renaissance nor Mr. Morale got five stars, having to settle with a "mere" four. Ants from Up Here got five stars.

The initial review basically based on one personal opinion, EOY is based on staff consensus. Back in 2019, Lana's NFR got 3/5 stars but ended up being #1 on their EOY list.
