All-Time Film Poll (2022 Edition): List Submissions (DEADLINE: November 4)

Post by BleuPanda »

It is now time to submit your lists for our first all-time film poll since 2016! The deadline is set (for November 4), but you can always ask for an extension - I'd rather wait a few weeks and get more submissions than rush it out.

An excel sheet is attached to this post; please send your ballots to me through a private message. Do not modify the first (hidden) column - this column contains a reference number used to easily re-sort everyone's submissions to the same order.

Rank every movie you have seen - the system we use essentially subtracts points from the bottom half of your list, so if you only rank your favorites, you will end up hurting most of them

A note on comments: as this is an all-time film poll, I will only publish comments that are positive - I want this to be a celebration of our favorite movies. If you really hate something, well, that's what a low placement is for!

For the final results, I will be using a modified version of our usual formula (scaled to comfortably fit 250 films). Scores will start from the center and scale outward - meaning, if you rank only 50 movies, your rankings will correlate to the #101-150 spots of a full list. At the same time, any list greater than 250 will treat the middle cluster as one big tie (the same as an unwatched film). Essentially, this change gives greater weight to larger lists, but also caps out after a certain point. To put this in more meaningful terms - if you have seen a small number of these movies, each additional movie you watch will further strengthen your favorites.

Also, to make the differences between movies easier to understand, I will be treating the middle value as a zero - films that do worse than average will have a negative point total, which will make it easier to see the transition into films that did better than average. I'm hoping the jump from negative to positive will be more recognizable than a jump from, say, 550 to 600. This is merely a cosmetic change - the point differences will still be the same.

Though there are 297 films being ranked, the final reveal topic will focus on the top 250. Basically, my idea is that a few excess films were necessary to give us a truly solid list - some decades are stronger than others. I will still reveal the placements and any comments for the bottom 47 at the end of the project, but I think starting deeper in will make this feel more definitive.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

I made a Letterboxd list here, in case anyone wants an easy checklist of remaining films:

Just eleven to go to have a full set, and they all seem fairly available, so I'll be submitting once I've got those down too.

I’ve seen 173/297, and at 58.2% that’s easily the highest percentage of movies I’ve seen for one of these polls.

259/297. 87%

I do not think I can get through all of them in time. But I will see what I can do.

I have a few omissions, but they include Shoah, Decalogue, The Best of Youth and Satantango. I’ll need a month to watch just these movies.

I pushed the deadline back a month - I need some more time between this and the artist poll.

I needed the extra time. I spent the last month or so laser focused on finishing my data analytics certificate (which would be useful for something like this). But now I'm ready to rank what I've seen.

I’ll try, but this isn’t as fun as I thought it was going to be. I had a whole list of my favorite movies ready.

Is there anyone still planning to submit? I'll start calculating the results tomorrow but will actually be busy most of the day, but I will probably start revealing by Monday or Tuesday if all goes according to plan. I can still add lists up until I actually start the results, but let me know if I should wait for you.

What's the smallest number someone has submitted on a list? I've only seen ~110 of the movies recently enough to be confident in a ranking so wasn't going to throw my hat in the ring for this one.

These lists arrive in a way where I'm not actually 100% sure how much everyone has ranked while I am adding them, but there are a few in the low hundred range. As I said in the opening post, I'm doing a bit of weighting based on the amount seen, so don't feel like a smaller ranking is a problem.

I'd rather have more lists, if you would have any interest!

Right now, we are at 17 lists - well, someone accidentally sent a blank ballot and I still need to actually make my own (oops), but yeah! I think 17 is a good number - but if anyone wants to speak up in the next day, I'll happily add you in. Otherwise, I will probably start tomorrow (I have the next two days off, so plenty of time to get this started).

A lot of my time on this today was tinkering with the formula - my initial formula felt too top heavy, which ended up skewing the results too much in favor of those who had seen more movies. I think I have finally settled onto a formula that 'looks' right to me. Not sure when I will actually be able to start the results, but hopefully I'll get into a groove once I get over the initial hurdle.
