At this stage, I don't think it's fair to assume negative opinions on anyone's behalf. For my own breakdown, I have given:
160 of these movies a full 5-star rating (out of a firm 250 5-star limit - 64% of my own top 250 made it in)
115 4.5 stars
17 films 4 stars
And a single film 3 stars out of five, which is ultimately neutral

So, I love the grand majority of these films and would still call 17 of the other 18 great (if not best of all time worthy).

What do you mean, fair? Nothing wrong with negative opinions. Though we also love most of these.

Fair as in likely to be accurate. I'm sure most of us have films we would call favorites that ended up with us listed in the bottom half.

For me it's something like this:
1-100: masterpiece
101-200: good, but no major favorite
201-250: slightly above average
251-297: dislike
De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum.

bonnielaurel: Hitchcock reused some standard plotting techniques from earlier films. A double pursuit is when an innocent guy is chased by the police while he's chasing the real criminals. A microfilm serves as the MacGuffin. Eva Marie Saint plays the beautiful blonde who can or cannot be trusted. Cary Grant is ideal to incorporate a few comical moments, like the drunk driving scene or when he's hiding his face behind shaving foam. The crop duster plane and the Mount Rushmore descent are two memorable climaxes.

bonnielaurel: In this confrontation between culture and nature John Williams' two note ostinato suggests the lurking danger under the water. They had to do this because there were technical problems with the mechanical sharks. They avoided the color red in most of the film to enlarge the contrast with the blood. Just before Brody leaves to hunt for the great white shark his wife asks him what to tell the children. He replies with a euphemism: "Tell them I'm going fishing." But is the boat big enough?

bonnielaurel: This intense drama is deeply rooted in Chinese history. Polygamy meant that women had to set aside their own desires for the sake of the family. This led to rivalry between the women. Zhang Yimou uses static, symmetrical images. The dominant colors are red and white. The lanterns, the flute and the masks have a symbolic meaning. Portraits of the ancestors watch the behavior of the living. Gong Li can look emotionless, until suddenly a tear or smile breaks through. The husband's face never comes into focus. The music with vocals, flute, cymbals and wooden whips suits the Chinese tradition.

What do you mean, fair? Nothing wrong with negative opinions. Though we also love most of these.
Fair as in likely to be accurate. I'm sure most of us have films we would call favorites that ended up with us listed in the bottom half.
I guess your last statement could be true for some of us. But in my bottom half there are no favourites to be found. Good films that I like quite a bit for sure, but favourites would have to make the top 5th at least.

~51-100: great
~101-180: good
~181-240: alright

I didn't participate because I've only seen 186 of these movies; but, if I had, the one film Gillingham dislikes would've been #1 on my list ("The Wizard of Oz"). Not because, by any means, I consider it the greatest film ever made, but it was the first I saw when I was four years old and it started my love for cinema and art in general. I still love it to this day because it's so deeply embedded in my youth and filled me with such a sense of awe back then. In the same sense, #2 probably would've been "Man with a Movie Camera". I saw that as an adult, but was equally awestruck that something so innovative could've been made in the 1920s. My list would've likely been pretty balanced throughout the decades, though there is certainly a greater number of more recent films I dislike than classics.

Thanks for all the work you've put into this, BleuPanda! Obviously, I'm following it rather closely ... :greetings-waveyellow:

Okay, maybe I'm an outlier then. I guess it all depends on why we watch movies. Personally, I find my concept of myself barely factors into it - rather, for me, film is a direct gateway to the perspective of others. My post-watching analysis is generally along the lines of quantifying both the technical merit but also evaluating its place in the world at large. I feel, if I put in the energy, that I could explain why each of these films are beloved by a large number of people.

To put it another way - I just really enjoy the process of watching movies. Even when I watch a poorly made movie, I enjoy identifying why it isn't fully working. So, it borders on impossible for me to declare which films I enjoyed more than others - my level of enjoyment while watching tends to be about equal across the board. I get more out of the post-watching processing (which explains why a puzzle box like Mulholland Drive has been my long-time #1). But as long as the technical proficiency is there and it's saying something, I am probably going to like it. It's also why I am sometimes wary of overpraising the classic Hollywood system, as I find such a system reduces what can meaningfully be said (even if it tended to guarantee at least some level of technical merit).

bonnielaurel: The best comedies often have a serious undertone. Bud Baxter is an individual in a modern city. He functions as a part of the system, as a tool in the hands of his superiors. The question is whether he can overcome this and become a Mensch. Including a suicide attempt in a comedy was unusual. One of the funniest moments is when he uses his tennis racket as a colander.

I think I found the problem - for whatever reason, your reference number for The 400 Blows got edited, so all the movies that begin with numbers seem to have shifted. Luckily, this only effected 6 movies, so this should be an easy fix once I get home.

I hope everything was updated properly - The 400 Blows tumbled a dozen or so spots out of the top 100, while 12 Angry Men shot into the unrevealed section. A Brighter Summer Day thus fell one spot into #51, so make sure not to miss its placement here.

I'll try to get to the rest sometime this weekend. Sorry. Please don't modify hidden columns marked 'DO NOT MODIFY' in all caps - at least two other people replaced the numbers in this column with a duplicate of their ranking, but at least that was so obviously wrong I caught the error up front. Luckily, this was right at the top so it only effected half a dozen movies, but there's a lot of small data that changes with any minor correction.

bonnielaurel: James Stewart plays the most passive hero of a thriller ever. He's watching his neighbors, window by window, like someone who's switching channels. At the same time we are watching James Stewart and following his train of thought. It's convenient that one of these neighbors is a songwriter providing background music. Bit by bit the crime plot takes over. Grace Kelly plays a posh woman who's smarter and more adventurous than she seems; Thelma Ritter as the nurse adds comical relief.

bonnielaurel: The story of an on-off relationship is made exciting by the way it's told. Unreliable memories, fantasy scenes, subtitles showing the character's real thoughts, asides to the camera or passers-by are part of Alvy Singer's subjective point of view. Diane Keaton used wide, masculine clothes for Annie Hall. Woody Allen created his first big drama, influenced by his favorite European directors Bergman and Fellini, but without losing his sense of humor or his gift for witty one-liners. It's the most fun I ever had without laughing.

Re: AMF Top 250 Films of All Time (2022 Edition)

Post by whuntva »

I'm having a hard time guessing what the Top 40 will be. Any of the remaining 88 films on the shortlist seem likely. Though I'm not sure anything in my Bottom 20 or so would make it. Those bottom 20 I do have negative opinions overall on, but any of the rest I would be okay ranking here.

bonnielaurel: The confrontation between the two men is built up slowly. First Harry Lime (Orson Welles) is invisible, then visible, then he speaks, then finally action follows. A mysterious atmosphere is created by the game of light and shadow and by the setting in post-war Vienna, divided into four sectors. The use of Dutch camera angles gives an uneasy feeling. Joseph Cotten plays a pulp novelist who doesn't care for literature, which adds some comical relief.

bonnielaurel: When Guido daydreams of flying away from a traffic congestion that shows his wish to escape from everyday's stress and routine. Fellini explores the mind of a character struggling with fundamental questions: finding inspiration for a new film, the women in his life, the hypocrisy of the Church. Guido's aspiration is to be a truth revealing artist, but instead he feels like the ringmaster in a circus.

Le Jeune Rylan: This is the kind of film that every master director wants to make and must make all their life.

bonnielaurel: The associative images in the beginning symbolize major themes of Ingmar Bergman: lust, religion and death. One woman talking and another listening doesn't have to be as boring as it seems. It's inspired by Carl Jung's analytical psychology, in which free association and speech therapy play a central role. Alma (Bibi Andersson) represents the persona, the mask someone shows to the outside world. Elisabet (Liv Ullman) represents the shadow, someone's hidden side. To reach self-realization persona and shadow have to become one.

bonnielaurel: Charlie Chaplin's tramp is a poor man who's pursuing happiness. He's often in conflict with his superiors, but protecting towards other unlucky people. Chaplin uses two kinds of humor. The first level are the slapstick scenes, taking place at his successive workplaces. The second level is the way he approaches the social issues during the Great Depression and the struggle of two individuals to survive. The music uses recurring motives for the main characters and switches from mechanical to comical to romantic when necessary.

bonnielaurel: A medieval knight struggles with 20th century existentialist problems concerning God, death and afterlife. He's surrounded by religious madness: flagellants, witch burnings, a pointless crusade. The chess scene was inspired by a painting by Albertus Pictor, who's a character in the film. The dance with death at the end was filmed with the present members of the crew, because Bergman liked the natural light at that moment.

Le Jeune Rylan: My favourite kind of thriller - without appalling evil, just the uncanny valley of reality. I used to be confused by the inconsistent styles and atmospheres presented by different scenes in this film, but after watching it several times and then I realize that's also another kind of horror: Through this thrilling journey, you cannot even know when to laugh and when to scream.

bonnielaurel: The first act is told from the point of view of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh). Her interior monologue in the car goes from memories to imagining what they will say after finding out what she's done. Water is a recurring motive: the rain, the toilet, the shower scene - a brilliant piece of editing combined with the screeching strings of Bernard Herrmann. Anthony Perkins plays motel owner Norman Bates, whose hobby is stuffing birds. It's a psychological thriller, but at the same time it was the basis of a new subgenre of horror: the slasher movie.

bonnielaurel: Travis Bickle is an unreliable narrator. We see New York through his eyes. This isolated, unstable person dreams away at the sight of an effervescent tablet. During the famous mirror scene we see his reflection - his pimple is at the wrong side of his face. After the climax a tracking shot moves back to show the track of destruction he has left behind him. Travis Bickle, coincidence or not, is an anagram of "visible track".

bonnielaurel: The mafia is portrayed as a state with its own hierarchy within the United States . Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) has to choose between the American and the Sicilian ideology. During Gatto's liquidation the Statue of Liberty is standing in the background. Coppola cross-cuts between scenes taking place simultaneously. In the beginning he contrasts the negotiations in a dark room with the wedding party full of light. The most impressive montage is in the end, when the word "godfather" takes on a double meaning.

bonnielaurel: A suspense story works best if you feel sympathy for the characters. Hitchcock uses visual techniques like the dolby zoom and color filters to show what's going on in someone's head. Partly the story is told by the recurring motives in Bernard Herrmann's music. James Stewart plays an ordinary guy who struggles with guilt feelings and acrophobia. Kim Novak unites three women inside her: Judy, Madeleine and Carlotta. Make-up and clothes, designed by Edith Head, help to achieve the necessary transformations.

bonnielaurel: The non-chronological narrative has two advantages: it gives the spectators a puzzle and it makes them understand things after learning what happened before. The title refers to popular books that used to be printed on cheap paper. There are numerous references to old spy stories, comics, TV shows and films. The careless way in which Vince (John Travolta) handles firearms makes you think he fancies himself a hero in one of those old pulp stories. The violence and rude language are part of this shallow, meaningless culture.

Le Jeune Rylan: "There are only a few films that can shock me enormously in both artistic form and ideological connotation, and Blade Runner is one of them.
For me, the parts most impressively of this film are the endings of these four replicates, which separately present the death of a human being (Zhora), the death of an object (Leon), the death of a beast (Pris), and the death of a god (Roy). And just through these only four scenes, I could understand how ridiculous to define human beings (or other identities) in any mechanical way, especially when it points to the maintenance of an irrational system. What a great film about revolution."

bonnielaurel: The first time I saw this classic I was surprised it wasn't bigger, longer and more epic, but I did like it. It gets better if you see it more than once. Rick (Humphrey Bogart) is introduced as a cynic who sticks his neck out for nobody. Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is shown as an impenetrable beauty, filmed with a gauze filter in close-up. The flashback to Paris reveals what drives the main characters. The story revolves around Rick's dilemma between love and patriotism. Hollywood was very international in those days, which resulted in a great cast with strong supporting roles, especially Claude Rains as the French captain. No other film is parodied, quoted and misquoted so often, or the subject of a quiz.

Thanks for undertaking this BleuPanda! I enjoyed the roll-out and the chosen stills.

But I'm disappointed by the fact that the top 15 is so American. Only the two Kubrick films are partly so and partly British. A bit more diversity would have been nice. Well, I'll keep that in mind next time too.

Only on Acclaimedmusic is Citizen Kane at #1 a surprise. But a welcome one, to be clear.

Great rollout as always, Bleu. And I love going through all of these. There were only three Top 100 films I had not seen prior. I caught up with them during this rollout and liked all three. But it was still great to see you take so much time out of your busy schedule to put this together. Well done!

I offered to do this while momentarily forgetting I was also running the artist poll this year - doing both was kind of exhausting, so I'm sorry this one took nearly a month to roll out.

I'll share the bottom 47 once I get home, hopefully, and maybe I can do some modifications to see alternative scenarios - most importantly, I want to check what the results would have looked like if I had used our usual formula where everyone is ranked from the top down instead of starting from the middle. I think this new method worked better (more than anything, I think the old method caused those who have seen less films to do more relative damage to the films in their lower half than those who ranked more, which feels off in several ways).

Is it OK to ask where is the greatest film of all time, Jeanne Dielman ? Didn't you guys get the memo to shake, rattle and roll your canons first ? I mean, Citizen Kane ? Really ? Like, when do you think we are ? 2002 ?

Joking, flawed questions and "creative differences" aside, one has to acknowledge the time and effort put into running these polls so it's a thank you to BleuPanda from me too, even tho I didn't submit a list (too tight on spare time towards the end of the year).

It ended 11th of our 1975 poll and 97th of the 70s.
It had no lovers and no haters in the 70s poll so it seems that is a movie AMers like but don't love.

Thanks for the hard work, BP. I agree that the top 15 is too American, but they are classics. I had Bergman and Fellini much higher. It's surprising that the forties take the top 2, but those two are unavoidable in any poll.

The latter to be sure. My starting point for my rankings was my Letterboxd ratings; Dogville was pretty solidly in the 4-star range.

For reference, my splits:

1-3: 5 stars
4-22: 4.5 stars
23-62: 4 stars
63-113: 3.5 stars
