Re: Award Season 2023
I will be posting my final Oscar predictions sometime around next weekend, but I'll note that Everything Everywhere All At Once has become a undeniable threat for the win, sweeping the guilds, with only a WGA win under it's belt to complete the full sweep of SAG + PGA + DGA + WGA, joining the four films below
Argo
Slumdog Millionaire
No Country for Old Men
American Beauty
as sweepers to win all four major guilds

Re: Award Season 2023
Some Oscar hot takes;
Aftersun should’ve gotten more, but honestly even one nomination for it feels lucky.
Nothing for Nope? I feel like it should’ve gotten some non-technical categories, but at the very least the effects and sound were worthy. You’re telling me Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had better special effects than Nope? Absolutely absurd.
I feel like someone in Women Talking should’ve gotten an acting nod, probably Rooney Mara or Ben Whishaw
Barry Koeghan and Jamie Lee Curtis, both obviously insanely talented actors, feel out of place and although they were lifted by their films being so highly rated.

Post Oscars, but rankings of the 10:
1. The Fabelmans
2. TAR
3. The Banshees of Inisherin
4. Top Gun: Maverick
5. Avatar: The Way of Water
6. Women Talking
7. Everything Everywhere All At Once

9. Elvis
10. All Quiet on the Western Front
All Quiet is the only movie I would call bad from the nominations, with 7/10 being great movies for me. Really good crop of nominations, even if the complete shut out for Banshees, TAR, Fabelmans, Aftersun and Babylon make me slightly disappointed in how much the ceremony was dominated by 2 movies.
Also the complete shut out for Nope at the nominations is still the biggest snub of the year.

Re: Award Season 2023
I got 8 out of 23 predictions wrong. I've done much better in the past. Sadly, it seems that I made the rookie mistake of letting my own low opinion of All Quiet on the Western Front cloud my judgment. I did predict it winning the obvious international feature award, but I really don't get the cinematography and score one (I don't find the production design exciting either, but I don't find fault with it). The cinematography of All Quiet does have some impressive long takes and an interesting angle here and there, but I felt that it looked too polished and shiny for a tour through the hell of WWI.
Worse is the music. It's drones where very incessant, trying to loudly insert danger in scenes were there wasn't any. So much for All Quiet being all-quiet. Then there are the melancholy, slightly orchestral parts that are similarly put in odd places that frequently don't deserve them. Last week I listened to all nominated scores on Spotify. This was the least satisfying listen of all in that way, but it is strange for a movie score to work even less well within the context of its film. Especially with a strong competition. Admittedly, I thought the Fabelmans was one of the more forgettable works of John Williams, but the remaining three were high quality and original. Carter Burwell's The Banshees of Inisherin uses subtle folkloric, almost fairytale touches that don't insist on themselves when watching the film, but repay a closer listen and do enhance the atmosphere. Son Lux mixes a more electronic/ ambient score with whatever the movie needs and does it with surprising subtlety, which helps the film not getting overcooked. The album release is actually almost two hours long, but doesn't waste an minute. Best of all, though is Justin Hurwitz masterful score of Babylon. The film is very divisive, but can anyone claim that the score is not a wonderful invention? I was reminded of the best music Nino Rota wrote for the films of Fellini, where a wild carnival atmosphere was joined by familiar music cues from everywhere and with well-timed pauses that quickly turned into abandon. The album is 90 minutes long and just for the way it keeps reinventing the main theme it is worth a visit.
And now that we are all ranking the 10 nominees of best film, here is my list, with rating out of 10.
1. Tár - 8
2. The Bansees of Inisherin - 8
3. Everything Everywhere All At Once - 8
4. Triangle of Sadness - 8
5. The Fabelmans - 8
6. Women Talking - 8
7. Top Gun: Maverick - 7
8. Avatar: The Way of Water - 7
9. Elvis - 6
10. All Quiet on the Western Front - 5
Taken as a whole, this is actually quite a solid group, even if I miss a deep personal favorite. There have been worse line-ups at the Oscars for sure.
Worse is the music. It's drones where very incessant, trying to loudly insert danger in scenes were there wasn't any. So much for All Quiet being all-quiet.
