2024 U.S. Presidential Election

Post by Live in Phoenix »

Predicting a Kamala win, Arizona in her column, and at least one defection from a red state. I still don’t plan to relax until about January 20th.

I agree with your prediction; I also feel like if the media calls it for Harris, there’s ultimately nothing to be done (though the opposition will try), but that thought doesn’t feel all too comforting right now, in all honesty.

I really hope you guys are right…it’s at times like this I wish I was still living in AZ or Texas so I could help out the more competitive elections. At the very least it would be nice to make sure Kari Lake and Ted Cruz don’t win their Senate races.

It's been a pretty depressing evening so far. And I'm not saying that Kamala Harris can't still win, but just to see so many of my fellow Americans could vote for Donald Trump again after everything he's done is beyond baffling and heartbreaking. :( We're talking about a guy who's bragged on tape about sexually assaulting women; been impeached twice (once for trying to blackmail a foreign leader and once for instigating an insurrection to overthrow our democracy); made endless racist, sexist, transphobic, and xenophobic statements; expressed an affinity for Adolph Hitler; said he would consider using the military against our citizens; been convicted of 34 felonies; referred to members of the opposing party (which includes me) as "the enemy within"; and so many other things I couldn't begin to list.

And now that the Supreme Court (consisting of 3 justices he appointed) has ruled he has "immunity" for "official acts" (however that can be defined), I don't suspect he'll ever leave the White House. He said before the election that if his supporters voted him in this time, they'd never have to vote again because he'd "take care of it." And now there are no guardrails for his agenda, since he will only appoint sycophants to his cabinet. He's going to put RFK Jr. in charge of health; Elon Musk in charge of the economy; an ex-football player in charge of defense. I honestly don't think we can bounce back from this if he gets elected. I could blame all the gaslighting from Fox News and other biased media sources that prevent so many people from being exposed to the truth, but that would be too easy. All you need to do is hear the cruel, nonsensical words that come out of Trump's mouth, and any good, rational, person should never be able to vote for such an obvious narcissistic madman who ONLY cares about himself. I'm sorry to be so bleak, but then I never dreamed that the United States of America could fall for a conman (and not even a good one) so completely. I just don't understand...

Honestly, I never expected that Trump might win the popular vote as well. I don't think even most hardcore Republicans thought that would happen. What can the Democrats do in their next campaign to get the people on their side? Perhaps they'd gain the support of more ordinary Americans if they made "bring back the $5 footlong" their core issue?

EDIT: My bad, I was writing under the assumption that there would continue to be presidential elections for the foreseeable future.

Giving up on the more poor WASP electorate, failing to understand that the Latino electorate is extremely conservative, sticking to those "star aura" shows with famous and notoriously rich people, alienating the silicon valley business who have complete control over the information space online, I mean how more wrong could the Democrats get?

Politics has never been about promoting moral conduct, defending the environment, or even protecting democracy. It's about being the best at persuading (and the nuance with "manipulating" is paper-thin) the majority of the voters to vote for you. I have become extremely cynical about humanity ever since the first Donald Trump election and the Brexit, and this is only confirming my feelings.

My thoughts to American women. My thoughts to Ukraine. And to a lot more people for whom Hell is about to break loose.

In the meantime I hope left-wing parties around the world, Democrats included even if seen from Europe they are barely left-wing, and all the politicians, philosophers and influencers around the world who care about democracy will finally understand the lessons that Hilary Clinton's defeat failed to teach them. If not we'll just have to see how many more punches in the face like this one they will have to take until they do.

I feel for you, jamieW - especially after your eloquent reminder of everything that's wrong with Trump - and also for you, Live in Phoenix, Sweepstakes Ron, FrankLotion and Holden... and all other rational Americans and everyone around the world that will be negatively affected by the Orange One over the next 4 years (and beyond).

I agree with Pierre that the Democrats will need to have a different approach in future, even if that means a more dumbed-down, sensational approach.

I can't believe I will have to look at his orange face online again all the time over the next 4 years. Surely someone will be able to create something that will block that face on your screen every time he pops up. Please... anyone.
