The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
"This is hardly the first list to present the most exceptional songs of all time, but I believe it is the first that represents a serious effort to cover the entire world. Many lists that purport to catalogue the greatest songs are fun and informative—and all of them to date have been shortsighted. Most confine themselves to a few genres; some, even as they emphasize the “all time” claim, cover just the past few years. But the worst flaw is in the lists that limit themselves largely, or even exclusively, to songs in a single language—usually English."

Ooh, I hope this is eligible. It kinda just looks like a blog, but if the author is any kind of authority on world music, I would love this to be counted.

It's a cool list for sure. A basic search on the author shows he is a journalist and was the editor of the Israeli Haddash Magazine (whose website won't load for me, so I can't check if he wrote about music there). As an avid traveler and migrant he seems to write a lot about cross-cultural living, which I guess is reflected in this list. According to the website for this list, he listens to 1000 albums a year, but only writes about 50 of them, as he only wants to write about the ones he truly loves. Whether or not he has written about music outside of this blog I'm not yet sure about.StevieFan13 wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 2:41 pm Ooh, I hope this is eligible. If it is included, would it be the list with the biggest breadth in countries? Has to be right? As far as I can tell, the song selections for each culture are rather surface-level (the Dutch language one should come up in your most basic Google attempt for example), but it is still impressive to listen to so many countries at all and nobody can go really deep into music from every corner of the world.

Thought I'd transcribe it but I don't have much free time to do it.

Obviously, I'm at least scanning through to see if any Eurovision songs made the cut. The obvious one, "Volare," sure as hell did.

great discovery although the outcome , this type of list would need like 2-3 individuals from each country ...

No, it's the same guy. Uses the same photo for his writer's work and for the music website even. I'm now able to open the Haddash Magazine website and learned that Tigay wrote a column series called The Jewish Traveller for a long period, which is where this book derives from. He didn't write specifically about music though, so that might complicate his eligibility.VacantJoy wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 7:52 pmhttps://www.linkedin.com/posts/alan-tig ... 35808-cz4BRob wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 5:53 pmIt's a cool list for sure. He may be a travel journalist longer but his World Listening Post project has been dedicated to music coverage for 9 years and his list has the rigor of a music critic in its selection (much more rigorous than other lists we have included) so I don't see a impediment to its eligibility.

That'd be my opinion here as well. There is clearly a lot of work in this, with a serious curation process. It's much more valuable to me than a load of clickbait-like lists that get posted here.panam wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 11:18 am He may be a travel journalist longer but his World Listening Post project has been dedicated to music coverage for 9 years and his list has the rigor of a music critic in its selection (much more rigorous than other lists we have included) so I don't see a impediment to its eligibility.

Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Thanks to all who have posted about my "Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. I'll try to respond to the questions raised. Yes, I am a career journalist, with stints as an editor, writer and professor. I graduated from Columbia Journalism School (back in the Stone Age). I was a correspondent for the old United Feature Syndicate (best known for the cartoon "Peanuts") and was also the editor of Hadassah Magazine, a Jewish publication based in New York, for many years. Prior to 2015 I had written occasional music, book and film reviews and travel pieces but spent most of my time editing. In 2015 I launched World Listening Post, dedicated to global music, which I thought (and still think) most Americans—and, broadly speaking, most English speakers—ignore. The Global 500 Greatest Songs gave me an opportunity to focus on the broad sweep of world music, rather than concentrating just on new albums. The project took me more than two years to research. If you've been through the list, you'll notice that every entry includes a few lines of commentary and lyric excerpt. I still have to fill in the comments and lyrics for the last 100 entries. By the way, there seems to be some discussion about whether my list qualifies for some particular status or distinction on Acclaimed Music. If someone could tell me if I've left anything out, please inform me.

Hi Alan,
Thank you for visiting this forum. Your list looks like a great addition to Acclaimed Music. It will be a very welcome global boost!
If you want to check out something here, I’d recommend the AM Foreign World Cup. It’s a tournament game we did many years ago, but still holds up I think.

Good afternoon Mr Tugay, thank you for coming to our forum and answering our questions. Congratulations on your list because it invites exploration and discussion of world music. The forum made its own dynamics with non-English speaking music, if you want, I left you the link so you can see the results

It’s a great list that deserves preserving this way! Thanks for making it! (Incidentally, if you feel like sticking around, we’re doing our poll of favorite songs in the “Music, music, music” section and I feel like you have a lot of cool unique picks that could add so much to it)Worldlisteningpost wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 9:11 pm Thanks to panam, hectorthebat and Daniel Milner (who transformed my Global 500 Greatest list into a Spotify playlist). Yeah I agree with both of you , I am in favor of it too ! Although the only negative for me here is the language barrier of a single individual to create a list like this … but the positive things outweigh the negative one …Rob wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 2:50 pmThat'd be my opinion here as well.

VacantJoy, thanks for the question. Other than English, the only language in which I claim fluency (speaking, reading and writing) is Portuguese. My wife is Brazilian and I've spent long periods in Brazil, all of which allows me to keep up my fluency—unlike several languages I studied when I was much younger but pretty much lost for lack of use. I am short of fluent but proficient in French and Hebrew. I've had a fascination with languages my entire life, which certainly factored into the creation of World Listening Post. Getting the lyric translations for all of the entries on the Global 500 Greatest Songs list was the most challenging, and also the most rewarding, part of the research. In many cases English translations were provided in the liner notes of the albums they came from, and in other cases I was able to get them direct from labels, publicists or the artists themselves. For some of the best known songs I found translations in online sources. I did some of the Portuguese, French and Spanish translations myself. And for about a dozen of the songs, for which there was no other recourse, I paid for translations for a very good traslation service, translated.com, based in Rome.

Great find, Panam!
And great list with some excellent selections, Worldlisteningpost! I must mention that I don't agree with all your choices, particularly from a Latin American perspective. Nonetheless, I find more positives than negatives, and the merits certainly prevail. Well done!
Years ago (when my English was less proficient), I attempted to neutralize the geographic biases inherent in the Acclaimed Music list. I'm eager to share those results with you.

I hope to see you more active across the forum, especially given your interest in exploring music beyond the Anglo-centric sphere, which is invaluable. Best regards, and keep up the excellent work!

Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Thanks, Blanco!
I could hardly expect anyone to agree with all my choices. But I would like to emphasize that the Global 500 Greatest Songs is not a list of my personal favorites, but an effort to produce a list that is blind to cultural and linguistic biases. And as I said in my intro to the list, I believe there must be at least 10,000 songs that merit inclusion on a list of the 500 greatest songs of all time!
I noticed in your link the reference to Richie Valens' "La Bamba." Surely you are referring to Rolling Stone's 2004 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. That list was one of my (negative) inspirations. 500 hundred songs, with 499 in English. True cultural blindness. When I started doing research in 2021 I read that Rolling Stone was coming out with a new list. I thought surely they would correct their bias and that my project was probably dead before it got started. But when the new Rolling Stone list came out I had to laugh. Instead of 499 songs in English it was only about 490. I guess that counts as improvment. And I happily continued working on my project.
Thanks again for the kind words.

Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Hello again, Alan. Is your listed ordered by some kind of preference, or is it just numbered in an arbitrary way?Worldlisteningpost wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 5:38 pm Thanks to all who have posted about my "Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list.
If Alan doesn’t reply, has anyone else seen any evidence of if it is ranked or not?
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Seeing how the list was presented starting with "Like a Rolling Stone" I thought that the numbering responded to a subjective criterion and was not just a random positioning. But it is true that it does not say so explicitly on the page. I hope Alan can clarify that.Henrik wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 10:53 amHello again, Alan. So the list is ranked or not?
Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Perhaps, but Prince Purple Rain is 235... and Zaz Je Veux N°117, Kenji Girac N°268 in an all time list (!?!?!) , seriously
I asked Alan directly on his site, but it doesn't respond...
Other, but personal doesn't have many Jazz songs, but world music is very very well represented and it's a good thing.
Re: The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - World Listening Post / Alan Tigay (2024 - USA)
Answer from Alan, now it's clear:
"The list does indeed rank the songs from #1 ("Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan) to #500. For example, the highest ranking songs in French are Edith Piaf's "Milord" (#4), Georges Brassens' "Les Copains d'Abord" (#26) and Jacques Brel's "La Chanson des Vieux Amants" (#30).
I mention in the introduction that I do not consider the list definitive. I would love to see others make their own lists. But I do believe it represents the first serious effort to provide a Greatest Songs list that is truly global in scope. There are hundreds of greatest song lists, but virtually all of them are narrow in scope, restricted in genre (mostly rock and contemporary styles), language (mostly English) or time (mostly the past few decades).
I tried to be as objective as possible, even though it's virtually impossible to combine objectivity and taste. At best, I consider the list impressionistic. I can easily defend why one song is at #5, for example, and another one is at #405. But I wouldn't feel as confident arguing why #5 and #6 should not be reversed.
Best wishes,

Great response from Alan. I hope he didn't feel like he was questioned. The only curiosity was to know if the positions are ranked.
