Instead of reposting my album diary with small updates every week, I'll update the previous post and link to it every week. I wish I could have posted last Thursday, but I was busy with work, travel, and Halloween preparations.

Anyway, I've got a bunch of new albums I love!

Last Week's Recommendations
  • God Save the Animals is my first encounter with Alex G. So I haven't heard any of his prior work, but people are saying that this record has more polish and budget than any of his releases thus far, and that the songwriting is particularly excellent. If you loved his earlier DIY Bandcamp releases, I can't tell you how you'll like this. I wasn't going to listen to this album because I didn't find the Cross the Sea EP that compelling on first listen. But once I gave it a chance, I fell in love with Alex G's variety of vocal textures in the baritone range, as well as his tender, spiritual songwriting. I couldn't tell you why, but this line from "Immunity" hit me like a truck: "Accident in Kansas, call you back soon, I / Yeah I'm in love with you / Yeah I love you".

Folky, fiddle and organ-backed standout "Miracles" rightly received some publicity from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in September. Besides appealing to my surface-level musical sensibilities, "Miracles" is thematically interesting as well, evoking human frailty, sacrifice, compromise, and humility. It makes a strong case for denial of self as self-care. favorite tracks: "Miracles", "Immunity", "Runner", "After All", "Early Morning Waiting", "Blessing"

  • I finally went and gave a listen to Topical Dancer by Belgian duo Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul, and god damn was it worth every minute. Topical Dancer is what it sounds like: topical songs that you can dance the hell out of. "Esperanto" is a personal favorite, voicing bemused fury towards privileged, fake-woke liberals by rattling off bizarre, occasionally hilarious microaggressions. The duo gets dark with "It Hit Me," recounting adolescent realizations of their own sexuality and being perceived sexually, to clattering, industrial techno. "Ceci n'est pas un cliché" made the rounds as a lead single and is remembered as a strong point of the album, and it is a banger. I really love "Reappropriate", a sparse, dramatic, chromatic call for women to reclaim their sexuality for themselves, at their own pace, on their own terms. "Making Sense Stop" is an all-time banger that's going on every road trip playlist from now on. "HAHA" is bananas. I thought that the vocal effect was achieved by splicing and editing, but no, Charlotte is just able to do that. Banger after banger after banger, good album yes. favorite tracks: "Making Sense Stop", "Esperanto", "Reappropriate", "Haha", "Blenda", "It Hit Me", "Ceci n'est pas un cliché"

  • Jirin wrote: Fri Jan 28, 2022 3:08 pm New Anais Mitchell drops today.
The new Bonny Light Horseman album, Rolling Golden Holy, is worth a listen. This is an American folk band that includes among its members Anaïs Mitchell. The three were invited to the Eaux Claires festival by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner in 2018, and enjoyed playing together so much that they formed a band. I don't have as much to say about this one, just that it's a really pretty album. If you like soft guitar folk with nasally vocals a la Tomo Nakayama, you will likely dig it. favorite tracks: "Exile", "Summer Dream", "Fleur de Lis"

Happy Thursday! No recommendations this week. Too busy getting ready for my Halloween party. If you guys think of any good background music for a joint funeral/baby shower catered by Taco Hell besides Señor Coconut's cover of "Showroom Dummies," let me know.

The new Parannoul/Asian Glow EP is pretty great, especially the final track.
Might be the first time in a long while I have 2 EPs in my top 10 EOY.

For me Dedicated is on par with Emotion. First nine tracks are sweeeeeeeeeeet.

Emotion = Dedicated >= Emotion Side B >= TLT >>> Dedicated Side B

Even if I have preferences, CRJ's discography is pretty solid, which I feel is pretty rare for an artist of her stature.

I know most people will disagree with me, but I'm impressed with the consistent quality of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's releases this year, particularly compared to Red Hot Chili Peppers, both of whose albums I found very poor. The lines "I love you so madly / Hell no, my name ain't Bradley" made me laugh out loud, which I'm assuming was not their intention.

Really enjoy your posts, ProjectTermina. Often make me smile.

Sault make great music, but also with an eye on the limited time availability of last year's Nine I could really do without the gimmicky release strategies.

I'm with you on this.
Also, apparently these five new albums are not available on streaming platforms.

Nine years ago all of my music listening was via pirated mp3s played on Winamp or my phone's built-in media player. I can do it again. Releasing music this way says, "don't play this casually; don't put it on some Spotify playlist for 'the vibe.' If you really want to hear it, you will go to the effort." It is so incredibly obnoxious and self-serious that I have to respect it.

Happy Thursday!

I gave Midnights a full, attentive listen. I feel compelled to compare this album to Reputation, her 2017 album where she leans into her poor public perception by performing a caricature of a petty, vexatious, backstabbing bitch: “This is the character you created for me, let me just hide behind it,” she said in a 2019 interview. On Midnights, she is not hiding behind a character -- you're getting 13 honest-to-god late-night fevered whorls of fear, craving, and contempt. It's pretty, but it's not pretty. There is some interesting atmosphere on this album that Antonoff and Swift deserve credit for -- "Labyrinth" and "Snow on the Beach" are the two that I've noticed most on this front. And I think that "Anti-Hero" is not only one of the best and most interesting pop songs she's written, but might go down as the defining song of Taylor Swift, the public figure. But as her albums go, Midnights is not shaping up to be one of my favorites.

I also gave The Loneliest Time another go-around, and aside from a few songs, it doesn't really resonate with me on any level. CRJ's melodic writing doesn't always do it for me -- for example, I almost never finish all of Dedicated because I can barely make it through "Everything He Needs." That chorus annoys the shit out of me. (UPDATE: I just listened to everything he needs again and uhhhh it's good???? like really good. what the fuck hap;pened?) Okay, maybe CRJ is just three years ahead of me. I'll try The Loneliest Time again in 2025 I guess.

No recommendations this week, but after a few more listens, I might shill for Lucrecia Dalt or Scout Gillett.

The Spoon record consists of Dub remixes of all of Lucifer on the Sofa produced by Adrian Sherwood, one of the modern-day masters of reggae's spaced-out cousin. Check out "On the Radio":
If any of y'all are Barbra Streisand fans, this record is a big one. Right after Columbia Records signed her, on November 4 through 6, 1962, she did a series of performances at the Bon Soir nightclub in Greenwich Village which were recorded and intended for release as her debut live album. Those recordings ended up getting shelved, probably because Bon Soir's acoustics were total dogshit for recording. Some of that material ended up rerecorded on her debut studio album, the Grammy award-winning The Barbra Streisand Album. But now, exactly sixty years later, those original recordings have been remastered and edited with current technology to get all the instruments to sound right next to each other. You can hear them as they were meant to sound tomorrow.

Big Joanie is a black punk band that's toured with Parquet Courts and Sleater-Kinney. I haven't heard any of their music but they seem cool. Check them out, if you're into that.

The new Dry Cleaning album is good but also has the distinction of being the first album cover since Malibu Ken that’s too disgusting to want to look at.

Before you submit your Pitchfork ballot, check out my list! Also, if you haven't already, please submit your ballot to your government in the United States.

1 | Black Country, New Road | Ants from Up There
2 | Natalia Lafourcade | De Todas las Flores
3 | J.I.D. | The Forever Story
4 | Black midi | Hellfire
5 | Big Thief | Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You
6 | Viagra Boys | Cave World
7 | Conway the Machine | God Don't Make Mistakes
8 | Meridian Brothers | Meridian Brothers & El Grupo Renacimiento
9 | Beyonce | Renaissance
10 | Death's dynamic shroud | Darklife
11 | billy woods | Aethiopes
12 | Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul | Topical Dancer
13 | Black Dresses | Forget Your Own Face
14 | Imperial Triumphant | Spirit of Ecstasy
15 | Otoboke Beaver | Super Champon
16 | Kenny Beats | Louie
17 | Jockstrap | I Love You, Jennifer B
18 | Soul Glo | Diaspora Problems
19 | Theodore Shapiro | Severance: Season One OST
20 | Leikeli47 | Shape Up

In terms of this list, still up in the air. Every year gets more rickety with less and less time to absorb albums into my soul. Also, I regret saying AFUT is an obvious #1, because I feel like I have a 4-way tie for the throne right now.

Probably the most "groundbreaking" album on my list is Darklife, check it out if you want to hear new fusions of pop and electronic.

Decided to give this a listen, I'm about twenty minutes in. I did not think for a second that a band called "Viagra Boys" would make this sort of heavy punk rock, but it doesn't surprise me at all that they're Swedish.

Thanks for the recommendation! Enjoyed this album quite a bit on my first listen. It's currently vying with Samora Pinderhughes' Grief, Julian Lage's View with a Room and Portico Quartet's Next Stop for best jazz album (or EP) I've heard of 2022

  • Natalia Lafourcade - De Todas Las Flores
HYPE HYPE
¡Escuchen!

Also, I could not get into Cate Le Bon's album earlier this year at all, until I listened to it on Monday night while walking to BleuPanda's house in a miasma of lethargic anxiety. Maybe those were the conditions I needed in order to appreciate Pompeii. Or maybe I just needed time for Cate Le Bon's lopsided melodicism to erode my foundation.

This week's recommendation

I'm currently on a bus to Chicago to see MJ Lenderman open for Plains. MJ Lenderman seems like a funny little rat man. He posted a clip of this other band Friendship on his Instagram that caught my attention. He did a couple shows with them earlier this year. He also did a show with the Mountain Goats -- fuck, how cool would that be to see.

Anyway, this band, Friendship, they are a more established alt-country voice than Lenderman, and this is their first album on Merge Records. They share a sensibility with Lenderman of examining and appreciating the mundane. Cool album, check it out if you're into that sort of thing. favorite songs: "St. Bonaventure", "Hank", "Mr. Chill", "Alive Twice", "Ryde", "Ugly Little Victory"

Oh what? holy shit. So, as promised, Brockhampton released their final album today, The Family. Except, they also announced a new album, the actual final album, TM, dropping tomorrow (tonight). Apparently it's a collection of shelved recordings from last year, now newly mixed and mastered to completion by Matt Champion. So The Family is the last album they recorded, but not the last album they released. Weird!

My friend Jake who's a neo-pagan former hippie in his seventies recommended me the self-titled debut album of Cuban singer-songwriter Angela Álvarez, who won the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist this year alongside Silvana Estrada. At age 95, she is the oldest artist to receive this award.

It was reported in September that Feid, the Colombian singer-songwriter, would release a wholly new album on December 1st after the album that he had previously slated for release on that date was leaked, and subsequently released 2.5 months early. This new December 1st release has since been framed as a "part 2" to the September release, but we don't have a name yet.

Wow thank you. I often feel like your tastes are the furthest from mine, but I guess occasionally they do line up. I am tempted to put Natalia at the top. For me, the black midi has moved over the J.I.D. though.

From the critics lists that have dropped so far, I've barely seen any Black Country, New Road. That album is #1 all over the internet but I'm not sure if it'll even make the top 10 for the critics. Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar seem on track for the top 2.

I'm fairly confidant Black Country New Road will be top 3 in Europe at the very least

Edit : ok maybe not, Les Inrocks didn't have them on their top 10 oddly

Beyonce will probably be #1 just because she’s the only one agreed on by both pop and alternative sources.

First update to list dropping tomorrow. Suffice it to say, idk about Beyoncé and Kendrick being top two, neither is even top 1 right now…

I suspect the Jockstrap album is #1. That one seems to steal the thunder of Black Country, New Road almost completely.

Feel like I need to give the Jockstrap album another listen, because BC,NR is my easy number 1 and Jockstrap didn't impact me at all.

Shit, wait, what? 100 gecs dropped a surprise EP, Snake Eyes, on Friday. This song "Runaway" is interesting. It makes me think of "Iridescent" by Linkin Park, off of their 2010 concept album A Thousand Suns. It was a pre-climactic moment of rest and catharsis towards the end of the album that was so unrestrainedly sappy that it purportedly got played on some Christian rock radio stations. The last sixty seconds of "gecgecgec" is the only time Gecs has come anywhere close to making a song this earnestly sentimental, and although I was surprised at first, it now seems to me to follow naturally from their previous work, wearing their influences on their sleeve up to and including "Say you never wanted more than this, that's okay / pussy out, run away / and yeah, I understand / I just think it's fucking gay," which might as well be a 3OH!3 lyric.

10000 gecs is expected on March 17, 2023.
