329. Grouper – Fishing Bird (Empty Gutted in the Evening Breeze): 8

These last four songs are easily the best 4-song streak of this version of Biggest Fan. Well, one of those was my own nomination, but still, the other three are almost as good. Keep it up!

Ordinaryperson happily breaks the horror streak with a song whose title actually sounds like it could be right for Christmas. It’s the second appearance by Queen and it is a post-humous release for Freddie Mercury.

330. Queen – Made in Heaven
Year: 1995
Album: Made in Heaven
Biggest Fan: Ordinaryperson (#438)

Wow, this is a very good song. Deep and layered, with the tension building and all.
love it.

329. Grouper – Fishing Bird (Empty Gutted in the Evening Breeze) (2008) 6.5/10
Innocuous, innit? Feels pleasant enough to hear, no complaints.
I ain't gonna write my friends about it either.

330. Queen – Made in Heaven 8
Back in the day when this came out, I wasn't thrilled. As a major Queen fan, it seemed like a easy cash in.
Listening to it now, doesn't feel that way. As most will know, this was a Freddie solo track. It's good to hear the Queen treatment.
I survived. I speak, I breathe,
I'm incomplete
I'm alive - hooray!
You're wrong again
'Cause I feel no love

Grouper – Fishing Bird (Empty Gutted in the Evening Breeze): 7
Not as sinister as the title sounds. It's always difficult to get a grip on any Grouper song, but that's what makes it intriguing.

Queen – Made in Heaven: 3
Perhaps some people get teary eyed from a song about heaven sung by Freddie Mercury, released after his death, but this for me is Queen/ Mercury at their worst. This is so pompous that any real feeling is drowned out. I especially don't like this yelling as substitute for feeling. One of the worst Queen songs if you ask me.

The last two songs may not have been Christmas songs, but are of the same type of plastic schmaltz that typify the worst of winter holiday music.

Weak pop with a slight reggae flavour. I really don't like the singer.

Up until now Neil has graced us with mostly laidback and smooth songs, but this time we get something more up-tempo, by a once-hitmaking band that feels a bit forgotten nowadays.

333. Scissor Sisters – Fire with Fire
Year: 2010
Album: Night Work
Biggest Fan: Neil (#141)

One day before Christmas Eve and Wezzo has Summer on his mind. I mean, Frank Sinatra has many well-known Christmas songs. Couldn’t we get one of those? Anyway, it is Sinatra’s second appearance here and the song is bubblin’ under on AM.

334. Frank Sinatra – Summer Wind
Year: 1966
Album: Strangers in the Night
Biggest Fan: Wezzo (#252)

You may have misnumbered Summer Wind, Rob. Maybe it was amidst all the seasonal confusion.

Scissor Sisters – Fire with Fire: 4
If this song is representative of their post-fame music than I can see why they fell off so hard. Their hits had a lot of character and felt like one-of-a-kind. Fire with Fire on the other hand sounds like a band that really hasn't found any reason to make new songs, but somehow decided to do so anyway, with a song that just checks a lot of clichés.
Wezzo wrote: Fri Dec 23, 2022 5:07 pm You may have misnumbered Summer Wind, Rob. Maybe it was amidst all the seasonal confusion.
I fixed it. And there is much confusion here. This afternoon I was walking through the city. The weather was nasty, with a cold rain. I walked past some stands selling food and hot chocolate for charity. Despite the date they had little people visiting them because of the horrible weather. Then I came back home and heard Frank Sinatra, one of the iconic voices of Christmas season, singing about Summer. Yes, the confusion was real.
Good song though:

And for Christmas Eve benevolent Random.org gives us a Sugarhill Gang song, with at least a title that sounds like it could be about a miracle. More importantly, it is a rap song from Romain, a user who in general doesn’t like hip-hop. Is such a form of reconciliation not the true meaning of Christmas? As an extra gift, it is the first Biggest Fan song in quite some time that ranks on AM, at #9893.

335. The Sugarhill Gang – 8th Wonder
Year: 1980
Album: 8th Wonder
Biggest Fan: Romain (#160)

There is something about some early rap like this, which highlights a party flavour that has gone from the genre, at least in that specific way, that gives songs like this a unique appeal. There's real joy here.

I already wished you all a merry Christmas, but I also want to wish you all merry Christmas from the Biggest Fan team (which is still only me)!
On the first day of Christmas Random.org give us some indie song whose title may or may not reveal the lie behind the Christmas season… Whatever the case, it is a change of pace for Prosecutorgodot, whose first two entries were hip-hop and the next two were from Schoolhouse rock.

336. Kero Kero Bonito – Make Believe
Year: 2018
Album: Time ‘n’ Place
