Films of 2023 Discussion Thread

Post by nquoid »

Thought it would be nice to have a space to discuss new release movies for the year.

Only managed to get to the cinema twice so far this, but trying to check off the awards season contenders with Till and Living, but neither Danielle Deadwyler or Bill Nighy would make my 5 personally for the year.

But we have TAR and Fabelmans out in the next few weeks which I'm super excited to finally see.

One of my goals this year is to write about all the films I see, so here are a few reviews for the recent releases (...all of these are 2022 but whatever)

Tar (4.5 stars):

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (4.5 stars - the big surprise of the year):

Did you hear about Todd Field making the DGA nod?

Went to see Skinamarink yesterday, was blown away by how scared I was. It’s been a long time since a movie was as scary to me as this (probably the first time I watched Lake Mungo a couple years ago). However, to enjoy Skinamarink you have to really allow yourself to slip into the spell of the movie, and it certainly won’t be for everyone.

TAR, Babylon and Fabelmans have completely upended my year end list. All in my top 10 for 2022. Looking forward to a relative dry spell now most likely until Barbie and Oppenheimer release

Celine Song's Past Lives looks like a another A24 hit, getting rave reviews out of Sundance, look for it in 2024's Oscar race.

I also like Past Lives. The film deserves more recognition.

We don’t need to talk about every film in relation to their awards expectations. Good films can just be good films.
