Moderately Acclaimed Albums 14 (2023) - Submissions Now Open!

Post by Honorio »

Well, here we go again. This is the fourteenth edition of the Moderately Acclaimed Albums poll. This is the second edition that is going to be hosted by me and the first "redux" edition, this time with 64 albums, half the size of the previous 13 editions. Hope this new approach could get a significantly higher participation, if not we can return to editions of 128 albums. One thing I'm sure beforehand is that the quality of the nominated albums will be as high as ever.

About the instructions and rules I'm going to simply copy and paste the ones Brad created for MAA12 last year (that I also copied and pasted last year for MAA13), with some variation on the amount of albums in points 2, 6 and 8:

"1. Best Moderately Acclaimed Albums is a voting game where only albums and EPs not ranked in the top 1000 are eligible. This includes all "bubblers" and completely unacclaimed albums and EPs.

2. There will be a single elimination draw with 64 albums, and now it's time to pick them.

3. Send me an ordered list of five to ten nominations via pm. Please include the artist name and album name as they appear on AM, as well as the AM rank (AM rank is important! Please don't make me track all these down!).

4. I will select nominations as follows:
First I will go through and pick all the first place albums.
Then, I will go through and pick all the second place albums.
Then, the third place albums, etc, until the draw fills up.

5. No albums entered into the draw of the previous three tournaments will be eligible. In other words, once an album gets in, it will be at least three years until it is eligible again. This is for variety!

6. No more than 16 albums ranked 1500 or higher will be picked, no more than 32 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 48 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list.

7. I will then sort the selections into quadrants based on their rankings, and then create a bracket by randomly sorting each quadrant.

8. During the competition period (which will begin in March 19th), we will choose one match-up from the first and fourth quadrants (starting at the top of each quadrant) in the field and square them off against each other in a week-long voting period. The following week we will choose the top match-up of the second and third quadrants. The third week we will use the second match-up of the first and fourth quadrants, the fourth the second match-up of the second and third quadrants and so on.

9. Additional rules:
- No one person can nominate more than one album by the same artist.
- Albums that have previously won the tournament are not eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the 2020-2022 Moderate games are eligible.
- No albums from 2022 are eligible (the winner of the Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2022 will automatically be entered).

10. Don't get caught up in all these parameters - I've made it easy for you by including the list of non-eligible albums below!"

Here's a list of the albums that are ineligible per the above stated restrictions (please check your picks!):

This thread will be open from February 19th to March 12th, so you have 3 weeks to send your nominations. Please send your nominations to me via a Personal Message through this site, and don't forget to include the current AM ranking for each album.

On March 12th I will open the thread with the draw, including the complete list of the nominated albums and the bracket-maker link. After a period of an additional week to allow the preliminary listening we will begin the voting period every Sunday morning from March 19th, so we'll end with a winner on September.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Looking forward to seeing your lists! I hope this 14th reduced edition may see an increase of participation. Thank you very much in advance to the ones that are going to participate.

Good catch, Jirin. In fact I updated it, the previous one was "no more than 50 albums ranked 1500 or higher will be picked, no more than 75 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 100 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list." But I did it wrongly because it's absurd to put the limit on 75 on a list of 64 albums. So I just edited the post above, now you can read:

"6. No more than 16 albums ranked 1500 or higher will be picked, no more than 32 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 48 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list."

For me, 64 albums seems too little. Can you hosted Moderately Acclaimed Albums but this time with 96 albums? I know I want this poll consists of too much album but you want it too little in this edition but 96 albums seems not too little but not too much too but this is more exciting than just 64 albums. With 96 albums, this will be like this:
Round 1: (96 albums, 16 weeks, 6 albums per week)
Round 2 (32 albums, 4 weeks, 8 albums per week)
Round 3 (16 albums, 2 weeks, 8 albums per week)
Quarter Finals (8 albums, 1 week)
Semi Finals (4 albums, 1 week)
Finals (2 albums, 1 week)

But the poll remains shorter since Round 2 last for four weeks, Round 3 last for two weeks, and Round 4 remains disappear. For me, 64 albums are less exciting. Thanks.

Thank you for your suggestion, Wisnu, but I'm afraid I can't do it your way. I'm not a mathematician but, since the game is based on brackets (of two options each) the number of albums should be multiple of 2. I mean, 1x2=2, 2x2=4, 4x2=8, 8x2=16, 16x2=32, 32x2=64, 64x2=128. If we begin with 96 albums we should need to do brackets of three options. And honestly I don't know how to do this with Bracketmaker. Maybe it's better to see how it works the current edition of 64 and next year we will see...

Is there a rule for albums 2020 and later that wouldn't be on the chart yet or are those just off limits? Like, I assume I can not nominate Fetch The Bolt Cutters.

Well, good question, Jirin. Since there's a delay on the main update, on this edition we have this problem. There is not a rule on the subject but I'm going to make one right now. If we take into account the lists for the 2010s decade we find that the albums from every year that ended on the main AM list were:
2019: Top 11
2018: Top 10
2017: Top 11
2016: Top 16
2015: Top 12
2014: Top 10
2013: Top 12
2012: Top 12
2011: Top 11
2010: Top 10
Mean: 11.5

So the albums that ended on the Top 12 of main AM lists from 2020-2022 are not eligible. More exactly the following albums:
Alvvays | Blue Rev
Arlo Parks | Collapsed In Sunbeams
Beyoncé | Renaissance
Big Thief | Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You
Billie Eilish | Happier Than Ever
Black Country, New Road | Ants From Up There
Bob Dylan | Rough and Rowdy Ways
Dry Cleaning | New Long Leg
Dua Lipa | Future Nostalgia
Fiona Apple | Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra | Promises
Fontaines D.C. | A Hero's Death
Fontaines D.C. | Skinty Fia
HAIM | Women in Music Pt. III
Japanese Breakfast | Jubilee
Jockstrap | I Love You Jennifer B
Kendrick Lamar | Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
Little Simz | Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
Low | Hey What
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis | Carnage
Perfume Genius | Set My Heart on Fire Immediately
Phoebe Bridgers | Punisher
Rosalía | Motomami
Run the Jewels | RTJ4
Sault | Untitled (Black Is)
Sudan Archives | Natural Brown Prom Queen
Taylor Swift | folklore
The Smile | A Light for Attracting Attention
The War on Drugs | I Don't Live Here Anymore
The Weather Station | Ignorance
Turnstile | Glow On
Tyler, the Creator | Call Me If You Get Lost
Waxahatchee | Saint Cloud
Wet Leg | Wet Leg
Weyes Blood | And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow
Yves Tumor | Heaven To a Tortured Mind

I'm still going to send on too, but I'm always one for the deadline moments. And we still have almost two weeks so there might be more people sending in lists.

The second week of nominations has been thoroughly disappointing, with only one more list (Gillingham’s, thanks!). Now we have 13 lists while we had 15 in MAA13, 17 in MAA12 and 27 in MAA11 after the first two weeks. I planned to have 3 weeks for the nominations phase instead the usual 4 but I could extend the period 1 additional week if necessary.

As a reminder (and only as a reminder, send a list only if you like doing it) the ones that sent a list last year but (still) haven't are:
acroamor
BleuPanda
bonnielaurel
Edre Peraza
hectorthebat
mileswide
Nassim

Honorio wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 9:58 am The second week of nominations has been thoroughly disappointing, with only one more list (Gillingham’s, thanks!). Now we have 13 lists while we had 15 in MAA13, 17 in MAA12 and 27 in MAA11 after the first two weeks. I planned to have 3 weeks for the nominations phase instead the usual 4 but I could extend the period 1 additional week if necessary.
I don't think this is necessary. With these polls people tend to either react immediately or at the very end. The middle part is bound to be slow.

Only 24 hours for the original deadline and only 2 lists more (spiritualized's and hectorthebat's), making a total of 15. I've going to extend the deadline 5 days more, until March 17th. Since we are going to have 4 albums per week maybe that first week for preliminary listening is not going to be necessary, we will begin the voting phase on March 19th as it was initially planned, after two days for me to organize the brackets.
Come on, let those lists come in!!

2 more lists, Nassim's and acroamor's (the "winner" of last year). By the way, 2 of the "winners" of the last 5 years haven't submitted lists yet.

24 hours left!
