Era – Looking for Something: 7
Leave it to Candyman to still come up with a dance song even when dabbling in new age. Is it really still new age if it is dance music? Isn't that a contradiction in terms? Whatever, I kind of like this. It is basically a low-key variation on Enigma's surprise hit Sadeness, mixing old-time European religion with the modern dance floor. It's not as intricate and varied as that earlier song, but it gets the job done.

Neil Diamond – Holly Holy: 4
There is no denying that Neil Diamond knows his way around a melody and he puts out some well-produced pop. Then why do I find his music so unlikeable most of the time (there are a couple of definite exceptions). Listening to Holly Holy today made me realize were the problem lies: he writes sincere songs, but sounds extremely insincere as a singer. Here he goes for gospel pop and preaches for love and understanding, but I don't believe him for a second. He has the voice of an snake oil salesman. No wonder that my favorite song of his is Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, in which he portraits an actual false prophet. He's just too glib a singer to convince me of the Holly Holiness.

Today we get the second appearance by Rufus Wainwright. It’s a Leonard Cohen cover, but not Hallelujah. Andy1010 remembers it well.

I once saw the concert film where this is part of. There a lot of famous artists cover a Cohen song. The results where mixed, but I remembered this as a highlight of the film. Out of context it is still very good, but not something I would pick over the original anytime soon. In the end, the lyrics work best with Cohen's aloof intonation.

Bleachers – Wake Me: 7
A rather laid-back, but still lightly touching song. Not particularly original, but good in what it goes for.

Amanda Palmer – In My Mind: 7
I know a little bit of Amanda Palmer's work, mostly through the earlier band Dresden Dolls. She is a bit of a frustrating talent, who frequently mixes sharply written character studies with performances that try a little too hard to be funny. Here it works well, because she sings it straight.

I think I once heard it being said that The Kinks are the most English band of all time and today’s song certainly has the most English title ever. Does that mean that today’s song is the most English product ever? Discuss while Holden serves the biscuits.

And now we move from England to Ireland, for a song I expect most people here have heard before, even if Arsalan is the only one who voted for it. Critics voted for it too, though, as it ranks at #9746 on AM.
With this entry U2 join the ranks of Prince, Todd Rundgren, Jeff Tweedy and the irreplaceable Bon Jovi for artists with three songs in this version of Biggest Fan.

459. U2 - Elevation
Year: 2000
Album: All That You Can’t Leave Behind
Biggest Fan: Arsalan (#359)

Heavily nostalgic and very much tied to a place and time for me. Otherwise it is just a very nice and soothing sounding song, as are all Gabrielle songs I am aware of.

Yes, I know you are here for unknown songs, but sometimes this game goes through a strange phase were we get only hits. This is the third on a row, good for over 300 million streams on Spotify; only half of which come from musicman I guess.

Okay, today’s song was only a minor hit and only in the UK as far as I can tell. It’s not a return to the beloved obscurity of the general Biggest Fan pick, but at least I suspect not everyone here will know it. Unless everyone has listened to every Bubblin’ under song on AM, as you can find this Akhenaten pick there.

Inbetweener is a 9 and I'm pretty sure it was on my list last time around, which would make it the rare song to technically qualify for Biggest Fan twice for different lists.

Avicii – Addicted to You: 8
When this came out I actually thought it was Adele who did the vocals! Turns out it is one Audra Mae, who has apparently done a lot of things, but nothing I know. She really sells this song for me though. I don't really care for the type of songs Avicii made and this rating might seem high, but the execution of Mae's vocals soaring high are truly addicting.

Sleeper - Inbetweener: 7
A breezy Britpop song, that seems to have fun existing. Who am I to deny them?

Finally a true return to form for Biggest Fan as the great internationalist Elder gifts us a track from a relatively unknown, Italian, erotic thriller, by an Italian composer who is not Ennio Morricone.

Stelvio Cipriani – Mary’s Theme: 6
Sure, the female vocals give it a nice touch, but I can't help but feeling this song is a little underdeveloped. Listening to the whole soundtrack as a whole I actually feel there are better tracks there, but apparently this is considered the stand-out, if Spotify streams are an indication. It's fine, but I have heard more compelling film music.

I love The Beach Boys but why are they consistently represented at Biggest Fan (both this and the previous edition) with their most dull output. Well, probably because their many great songs got more than a single vote.
