Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 401 - 500

Post by Rob »

Hey, it's a new topic for Biggest Fan 2nd Edition, where we can daily rate picks #401 to #500.

For those new here, the rules are simple. Every day I post a single random song from all the entries to the 2021 Best Songs of All Time Poll from this very forum. What makes these songs unique is that they only got one vote. That's right, according to the poll, these songs have only one fan. Perhaps we can change that? We also alternate among people whose songs are used. Although the persons are as random as the songs, everybody who participated in the poll gets a song here until everyone had their turn. Then we start over.

After I post a song you can grade it on a scale from 1 to 10 (0 is not an option and I will count it as a 1). After every 100 songs I'll reveal the current top 100 based on voting averages. If you missed a day, month or year, don't worry: you can always catch up or even change your grade later. There is no real deadline as long as this game is alive. I do change topic after every 100 to keep the topics a bit more manageable, but you can always go back to the older ones. See here below:

1 - 100
101 - 200
201 - 300
301 - 400

And this is the playlist with the songs:

Today’s song has quite the title. Is it just a silly joke or is it sexual or a deep metaphor for a particular kind of relation? At the moment, perhaps only BryanBehar knows for sure, but perhaps we’ll find out if we listen.

401. The Three O’Clock – With a Cantaloupe Girlfriend
Year: 1982
EP: Baroque Hoedown
Biggest Fan: BryanBehar (#196)

For today we have an important cultural event planned, as our song of the day is the debut single of not one, but two major icons: B.o.B. and Bruno Mars! The song has a lot of plays on Spotify, but was apparently ignored by everyone except Renan for our poll. On our master site you only find it bubblin’ under – for the wrong year even! Let’s right our wrongs and all vote a 10. Or not, if you don’t feel like it.

402. B.O.B., featuring Bruno Mars – Nothin’ On You
Year: 2009
Album: B.O.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray
Biggest Fan: Renan (#273)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.

I kind of expected a disaster and this was not that. It's a fine pop song in the typical 2010 style. Shame about the touches of autotune.

A nice surprise. Wasn't familiar with this Swedish band. Their debut album seems like something I would enjoy. Thank for introducing me to this band Spiritualized!

The Soundtrack of Our Lives – Broken Imaginary Time: 8
Indeed a great discovery. There is something Britpop about it (and apparently Noel Gallager is a big fan of the band), but certainly on the higher end of that genre.

Sweepstakes Ron’s newest pick has a title that confuses me. I had to look it up. According to Merriam-Webster ‘human contact’ means ‘interaction with other people’. I’m baffled by such concepts. Hopefully the song is more normal.

Bark Psychosis – The Black Meat: 8
There is something beautiful about the way this song fades in and out and starts anew. It feels very unique in the landscape of post-rock.

Catey Shaw – Human Contact: 4
A rather standard song, but rather badly executed. It's upbeat chorus sounds really off.

And now a song that asks the real questions: how long can something like Biggest Fan go on? When will it outstay its welcome? I guess at least Father2TheMan is happy we got to today’s entry at least.

Michael W. Smith – How Long Will Be Too Long: 4
I've said it before, but it bears repeating that despite being an atheist I find much religious music moving. This doesn't go for Christian rock, which keeps baffling me with its lack of creativity and overall fakeness. This is no different. Bad album cover too.

Today’s artist is cancelled in many circles, so as per usual in such cases voting is on your own discretion. It is the last song from Flibie’s list, luckily not because they are cancelled, but because it the last eligible song.

Year: 2001

The Three O’Clock – With a Cantaloupe Girlfriend: 6
Hey, I remember voting for this one an doing a short write-up, but I guess I didn't click 'Submit'? Anyway, the playing on this is pretty great, but the song is almost undone by the annoying singing style.

Ryan Adams – When the Stars Go Blue: 5
In contrast to its artist this song is inoffensive; a lit too inoffensive maybe.

Hey, this is the second time we get someone’s #1. Fittingly, it is also from the band that gave andyramones1234 his name. At least so I assume; perhaps his name is really Andy Ramones1234. It marks the second appearance by Ramones here.
