I've finally listened to 100 albums (give or take)!

Post by StevieFan13 »

Well, having just finished Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out, I've now officially achieved a big milestone. A project I've been working on intermittently most of my life and really started pursuing in earnest recently has been educating myself on great albums, past and present, across all genres. Obviously, I've probably heard more than one hundred over the years, but I mean full-on, start-to-finish, ALBUM-albums, versus cast recordings, soundtracks (those two are a whole other ballgame), kids' CDs I listened to in my youth, best-of/anthology compilations, or projects by friends that probably weren't meant for mass consumption. A few weeks ago, I tried to write down all the albums I could remember listening to that fit under that relatively broad umbrella, and since then, I've been going through a multitude of lists to at least make a (to use the term very loosely) shortlist of generally-beloved albums to give a listen to. I've been hopping all over the list, taking recommendations from friends and family, and on the whole just having a blast finding a whole new way to appreciate music that I'd barely appreciated before.

So, as a sort of progress-marker, here's my "first 100" albums, rated and ranked as I've gone along (save for ones I've heard prior, which I've tried to indicate by color). Note that there's at least one album here that's technically not in keeping with my rules, but the way it flows and its intent make it feel more cohesive than most anthology albums to me (also: fuck you, it's my list! Lol :D )

Red = heard before this project, blue = new to me.

Any recommendations are welcome, but believe me, I'm already swimming in plenty (although if you're from a country other than the USA or the UK, I would love to hear about famous/acclaimed/personal favorite/some combination of the three albums from there! I really want to listen to a little bit of everything, if my current progress hasn't indicated that lol).

Also, to come clean on something you may have guessed by now: yes, I did totally make album lists for prior decade tournaments completely based on what I thought of the artists and the songs I'd heard by them. I just wanted to fit in since most other folks had album lists, but it probably threw off the results a bit and I've been ashamed by that ever since, which is partially why I've slowed down voting in the decade polls. So apologies about that! I look forward to participating in future tournaments when my album knowledge will be that of a scholar(-ish), not a poser.

Thank you!! Yes, all three of the classic Jimi Hendrix albums are very much high on the to-listen-to list (especially since my sisters bought me a gorgeous Jimi Hendrix poster for my college room wall, which I felt like a gigantic poser keeping up when I hadn't heard a full album of his beforehand...it looked nice and I still liked his music already, so I'll cut myself some slack lol).

I'm honestly stunned you have listened to so little albums !
Well I would have expected that from 2017 StevieFan, but after 6606 posts that's a shock !

I don't have the full list of albums I have listened to, only the ones listed on AM (somewhere between 1600 and 1700 I think), so I guess I have listened to over 2000 albums.

Well, the way I see it, it's never too late to start!

Good start - just want to say it is possible to treat soundtracks and scores as separate from their media :)

And I guess since we're here, it would be wonderful to hear your thoughts on hearing music in the album format (vs song format)

Oh of course, I mostly set that as a very arbitrary benchmark so I didn't go crazy. In some cases, I do think a soundtrack can be a special thing on its own, but I do think the context of the movie adds a lot to the enjoyment of the music out of context. There are exceptions, of course, and I'm glad to be proven wrong down the line (I've spent many afternoons working to the music of the Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 soundtracks and a compilation of John Williams scores, so I'd be a hypocrite to say I never listen to them). Cast recordings even more so - I'm a theatre kid so I've never really been able to enjoy musical theatre cast recordings if I don't also have the context of the show. Otherwise it just doesn't make much sense to me. (The exceptions are shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, which started out AS a concept album, or Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Hamilton, whose albums are more or less concept albums on their own).

And what's been most exciting about this for me, at least in regards to hearing albums I've heard more or less on a song-by-song basis ages before, is seeing where these songs I've heard a billion times fit in within the puzzle of the album. For instance: I'm almost done with Adele's 21 now, and while most of these songs I'm already familiar with (how could I not be?), hearing them back to back and in context (I'm trying not to use that term a billion times lol) gives them even more weight than they have as just pop singles. Hearing "Iron Man" as a track in the middle of Paranoid and not just as an ancient, overplayed classic rock staple reminded me of its actual power, which I never had appreciated before. And in a lot of cases, it just means more music I've never heard before from artists I like, or at least want to like!

BTW, are there any particularly good lists to look at for reference regarding non-English language albums? I'm sure they're on AM already, but I'd love to know which are more or less reliable resources.

Weren't you the one who added many of that those lists? ;)

Anyway, I think the way to go is finding lists that only focus on one language or country, as they tend to be more in-depth and less facile than any list that claims to be about all "world" music.

Hey, I added 'em, doesn't mean I can keep track of 'em!

And oh, for sure. That's why I specifically want to find lists from, say, local versions of Rolling Stone of the best albums from that country or whatever. At least as a starting point. But I also don't want to miss out on contemporary music from those countries, 'cuz it's important to listen to music that's new right now too!

PSA: There's a reason MC Hammer's Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em isn't on Acclaimed Music.

Congrats on the milestone. I'm curious what led you to then go listen to an MC Hammer album before any Kendrick album haha.

Jorge Ben was the only artist with two albums in the top eight of the poll Jackson mentioned, so I'd check those out, and I also just listened to his album Fôrça bruta, which is quite good as well.

Noted. And it was his birthday, I'd been listening to singer-songwriter stuff all day and needed to turn my brain off, I'm a stupid completionist lol...

A Kendrick album's a project, I need to give those my full undivided attention. Part of why you'll notice there aren't so many double albums or too many multiple albums by "album artists" on my list yet (Radiohead's OK Computer was album #99, although my belated memory of Tom Lehrer's That Was the Year That Was being an album I've heard means it might be technically the "real" album #100). Believe me, he's up there. I just have to give myself a set pool of resources to start out with or I'm going to lose my mind!

I don't know what's more shocking, that StevieFan has only listened to 100 albums, or that Innervisions isn't one of them? Just kidding of course, I wish I had that much musical discovery in front of me.

The Smiths are one of your favorite bands right? You should listen to their first album as soon as possible!

Oh, The Smiths are high up on the list as well. The thing about my hopping, skipping, and jumping is that sometimes I'll be on a kick where I'll want a lot of the same kind of music, and sometimes I'll want to switch between genres as much as I can. The only band so far I've done a real deep-dive on with specifically their most acclaimed albums is The Replacements, whose three big albums I listened to back-to-back-to-back in one Sunday morning, but The Smiths are probably the next I'll do that with. (I did something like that with Aretha Franklin's two big albums while I was working out a few weeks ago).

It's an interesting list
I think this would be the year of the AT album list here
If I'm not wrong

I haven't listened to many albums in my life either.
But listening to an album is definitely a unique way to get into the artist's atmosphere.
Listening to music loudly is a little more narcissistic

Well I would have expected that from 2017 StevieFan, but after 6606 posts that's a shock !

I don't have the full list of albums I have listened to, only the ones listed on AM (somewhere between 1600 and 1700 I think), so I guess I have listened to over 2000 albums.
why do you think that posts in AM has anything to do with listening to albums ? And maybe someone likes to listen to specific tracks than full albums :greetings-waveyellow:

Really cool, I'd definitely suggest listening to listen to A Love Supreme since you seem to be enjoying the highly acclaimed jazz albums you've heard so far.

Also in terms of hip-hop I'd definitely check out some of Outkast's other stuff and maybe some of Eminem's albums (his first three specifically and I'd start with MMLP).

I'd definitely suggest listening to more of Bowie's stuff as well.

I don't know what's worse: the fact that i feel the need to speed through a certain famous rapper/producer/anti-Semite's most famous albums just for the sake of rectifying FOMO (I'm rating them but I'm not counting them toward the actual project, cuz the top 1,000 is going to be my ballot for the AT Albums poll next year and I'll be goddamned if anything by this asshole is part of my ranking), or that, inevitably, a lot of the contents therein happen to be really good. Even purposefully trying to breeze through them as quickly as humanly possible so I can get back to artists I actually want to listen to (and no, not everyone I've already listened to is a grade-A human being, most of them aren't probably, but I've got SOME scruples and I'm Jewish so it's personal to me), I can't deny there's a reason he was respected as he was at his peak. At least as a producer; his lyrics are still garbage.
