I’m always surprised at the lack of love for Neko Case’s “I Wish I Was the Moon,” which has taken up permanent residence in my AT Top 10.
Another, even more obvious one: my favorite Billy Joel song of all time is "And So It Goes," I think it absolutely deserves to be considered a representative song of his up there with "Piano Man" and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant."
Others that probably count from my perspective: Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" (somehow didn't make my list this time, but I wish I had room for it), Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady," The Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby" (some of my favorite Johnny Marr guitar playing on that one), Nina Simone's live cover of "Mr. Bojangles" (eons better than the more famous Sammy Davis Jr. version), and Outkast's "Spottieottiedopaliscious" (which I first heard through Pitchfork's original '90s songs list, but it never gets the shine of the more famous Outkast songs, and even gets overshadowed by "Rosa Parks" when it comes to Aquemini standouts).

While we wait for the results, let's discuss the thing that's been on someone's mind: a video version of the list.

Remember when I made a video version of the 2015 poll? It's gotten quite a few views. Three years ago, I discussed the possibility of making another one for the 2021 poll. Obviously, that never panned out. However... during that time, I did manage to prepare over 500 six-second samples for songs in the top 2000. They weren't in ranked order, so there's no guarantee how many of them would be of use in the future. Still, I don't want all that hard work to go to waste.

Now, I certainly don't have as much free time as I did back when I made that first video. Especially considering a new one would have to be twice as long. But the spirit of collaboration seems to be in the air, with this poll having the roles of data aggregation and presentation split between two users. The point I'm making, is... if I were to take care of the audio portion, would someone else be willing to take on the video editing portion of a video version of the 2024 poll? Hell, if we want to include all the pretty pictures of the artists again, there could even be a third person to take care of those. Or even more people depending on how you want to divide the labor.

Don't worry about needing to volunteer right now or anything, because there's no way this would be able to get done this year. I just wanted to gauge interest. I'd probably do the audio clips myself anyways, because I've found them a useful way to get to know songs in the past. :)

Thank you Cadavaca and Holden so much for handling this poll — is there a sort of estimated rollout time?

Will it be a top 2000 like in recent editions?

I've finished the first pass through the data — at the moment it looks like #1700 would be the first song to have received two votes. Do we have a convention for what the cutoff should be?

I think we never go for anything that could have made it with a single vote, so nothing below 100 points.

No worries there — we've got ~3000 songs with at least 100 points.

How many people voted? In 2021, 76 voted and it far exceeded more than 2000 songs with at least 2 matching votes (all top 2000 got 4 or more votes)

I've got 61 ballots. But there are definitely more than 2000 songs with more votes, it's just that 1700 is where the highest-scoring song with two votes appears.

3 songs in the top 2000 got only 2 votes, and 11 got only 3 votes.
So I'll guess we'll be fine with a top 2000 this time again.

In that case, and considering that there are more or less 3000 songs with more than 100 points, a Top 2000 could be the final list.

Cool. I couldn't check that. But it's confirmed the possibility of top 2000 as you say.

I just happened across an error in a list, Slick listed "Under the Pressure" as #211 in the #411 position, while the actual #211 "Smokers Outside the Hospital Door" is listed correctly, so there must have been a typo. Don't worry, I'm not obsessively checking for errors or anything!

I’m working on the rollout right now. Today will not be the day of release, no.
