Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 901 - 1000

Post by Rob »

Finally at the finals!

For those new here, the rules are simple. Every day I post a single random song from all the entries to the 2021 Best Songs of All Time Poll from this very forum. What makes these songs unique is that they only got one vote. That's right, according to the poll, these songs have only one fan. Perhaps we can change that? We also alternate among people whose songs are used. Although the persons are as random as the songs, everybody who participated in the poll gets a song here until everyone had their turn. Then we start over.

After I post a song you can grade it on a scale from 1 to 10 (0 is not an option and I will count it as a 1). After every 100 songs I'll reveal the current top 100 based on voting averages. If you missed a day, month or year, don't worry: you can always catch up or even change your grade later. There is no real deadline as long as this game is alive. I do change topic after every 100 to keep the topics a bit more manageable, but you can always go back to the older ones. See here below:

1 - 100
101 - 200
201 - 300
301 - 400
401 - 500
501-600
601-700
701-800
801-900

Funny you say that. This was the song I had in mind for the up coming “Piano” round in our Music League. Now that it’s showed up here, I’ll have to think of something else…luckily, lots of options

Funny how this song shows up while I'm participating in a Congress right now in Granada (the hometown of Los Planetas). I just gave my lecture this morning but still I won’t be able to write some comments and cast my votes until tomorrow (or even Monday).

I don't know if that's a big deal, as I think the overlap between both games isn't as huge as you'd think. Although I might be mistaken because of different user names.

902. Los Planetas – Segundo premio (1998) 10/10

Los Planetas were (are) the Spanish Indie Rock heroes par excellence, even with a recent biopic named precisely "Segundo Premio" ("Saturn Return"). Their third album, with a loose concept about a boy who immerses himself into a week of chemical excess after a loving disappointment, opened with this hate song (à la "Idiot Wind") built on a powerful drum beat (played by the immense Erik Jiménez), the usual wall of guitars, a subdued but imaginative string arrangement and an angry vocal delivery by J.

Full review here.

Now here’s a song I’m surprised got only one vote, but am even more surprised to find is not on AM. Sinatra has been live in Phoenix many times, so maybe Live in Phoenix once saw him there.
It’s already the fourth appearance by Sinatra here and also marks the second song on flying in a row.

904. Frank Sinatra – Come Fly With Me
Year: 1958
Album: Come Fly With Me
Biggest Fan: Live in Phoenix (#757)

Huh! A couple of Sinatra songs were close to making my list, but none quite managed to get there. This is a pretty classic song, though. I'll give it a 7.

Frank Sinatra – Come Fly With Me: 7
The things with this song is that is iconic in a way that works a bit against it. Of course he made a lot of these light, romantic swingers, but perhaps because this is arguably the lightest of his hits it has been all to easy to use in adds, films and especially romantic reality tv programming, which is the first thing I think about when I hear this. But really, my mind becomes a swirl of cliches of such tv, romantic comedies and a slew of airline and vacation commercials. That may not be the fault of the song itself, but something like the similar I've Got You Under My Skin has a more exciting instrumentation and a richer vocal approach by Sinatra which pries it lose from its overuse in so much media. The slighter Come fly With Me stands no such chance, though at least it is easy to like.

Didn't see him. I remember Sinatra coming through Phoenix not all that long before his passing (America West Arena, Dec. 10, 1993). The way I remember the Arizona Republic concert review is that the show was kind of sad, because of course by then he had lost a step, though the fans were happy. I didn't go to a lot of concerts in high school, and I got to see Nirvana that year, so I was happy, I was good. My attitude toward missing concerts has changed by now to where I if I have any notion of seeing a legend, whether or not their best years are behind them or their new album sucks, etc., you better go see 'em, because bands break up / people pass away sooner than you think. (Even allowing for inflation, tickets probably wouldn't have been that bad compared to nowadays.)

The plus one seems to refer to how the song refers several songs with numbers, but adds one to it. Sure. It's captivating and features a couple of good melodies in a short time.

Amy Wadge – Steve’s Song: 4
Has indeed strong "written-for-an-emotional-tv-scene" vibes, but not in a good way.

K-Ci & JoJo – All My Life: 4
A hit song I'd forgotten existed and I don't particular care to be reminded of. I wondered if the world at large had remembered it, as I don't remember hearing this after the 1990's, but it has quite a lot of Spotify plays, so people seem to remember.

This jazz-rap from Japan sounds very American in the end. It's as good in music as in rap.
