Pitchfork just opened there “Best Music of the 2020s so Far Readers Poll”, asking for 20 albums and 20 songs. I was planning on hosting this poll for AM come year end (probably after the 2024 EOY poll), but figured we could share our answers to this poll! Considering Anna Wintour decapitated most of the critics who voted on P4k's annual lists, it'll be interesting to see the mid-decade list based on the opinions of the critics whose heads were spared.

The list of the half of the decade of the 2010s was when Pk4 gave a nod to poptimism and especially to female artists and it influenced all music criticism over the last 10 years.

I'm curious to see if they can still move the whole game with just one list.

I kinda given up on Pitchfork years ago, back when they changed ownership and turned from music magazine to fashion magazine writing about music. I ocasionally check their Best New Album / Song pages but that's about it. However finding out here about this poll I did take it, not because I have any hopes or expectations but, as Elder hinted, I still have a bit of curiosity regarding where their readership still is, how will public picks still impact theirs and how influential they still appear to be over the rest of the music press.

They published the readers poll results:

They're way better than the staff lists. And I've come to this conclusion using a very scientific method

Out of my submitted lists of 20 albums/songs, the staff lists have 4 albums & 4 songs, the readers lists have 10 albums & 7 songs (and many more others that would have been in my Top 100).

But i felt there was a lot of charli, and, as much as i love brat, i think it got a bit overrated (maybe recency bias?)

I agree with Chambord that this is much better than the staff list, although it is noticeable how much both lists have shifted toward pop in the last 10-15 years. I had a lot of fantastic indie discoveries going through the past readers' lists, but for this one, I already knew all the songs. The list does still embrace the big indie releases, though, and most of the songs are great.

By comparison, it's baffling to me how Pitchfork's staff list completely ignores many of the most beloved indie releases of the decade. Most glaring is that neither of their lists have anything by Black Country, New Road, particularly Ants from Up There, which continues to be one of the most beloved albums of the decade in music communities like ours while being strangely ignored by most critics. For a publication that arguably used to have its finger on the pulse more than any other when it came to indie music, Pitchfork seems to have completely lost touch with its roots. No Fontaines DC, no Magdalena Bay. All of them have releases this decade that are universally revered in communities like this one, RYM, indieheads, and by their own readers, and I would have thought they'd be right up Pitchfork's alley. But not anymore.

I enjoyed listening to this list a lot. Some of my favorite song discoveries were:

One song I didn't understand the appeal of was Hard Drive by Cassandra Jenkins. It sounds more like an interlude than a song to me. It reminds me of Lil Yachty's :(failure(: which I also didn't like.

It's been already 2 months since this list has been published, and I'm realizing that very few Half-Decade lists have been published since, does anyone know why it's the case?

I had a quick look but it seems that most "best of 2010 - 2014" lists were published in early 2015, so I'd expect more of those early next year.
